We were visiting Kiruna to do a number of activities and hoping to see the Northern Lights. We chose snowmobiling, dogsledding, the Ice Hotel and a visit to a Reindeer farm. Some these mentioned we might see the lights but the focus was on other things.
On reading in the lists of activities we could do based at Camp Ripan, we found the photography tour - it had good
reviews, provided excellent equipment for each person and some training as well.
Our guide Yove, met us at the camp and surly handed us
each a quality Canon DSLR and and quality tripod, then taught us some basics and tips for photography in the dark and of the Northern Lights.
His ways may have seems almost humorous but the idea was to make instructions memorable! He succeeded.
We then got kitted up in suitable outdoor winter ware - don’t be fooled by the serenity, the cold can do you
serious harm, so take the locals advice. I would include some fingerless gloves, a scarf or balaclava for your face, and even 2 pairs of socks. Chooses from their snow boots
ones which are a little too big as they will be far warmer than boots that are fitting or tight. Bring some chemical hand warmers as well. Under their snow gear you should
have several layers yourself, including thermals.
The provided jackets are great and have a good hood, but bring a thermal beanie/hat to go under it.
We drove out of town for maybe 30 minutes, then stopped while Jove checked on local info regarding weather and
the chance of lights. It didn’t look good as it was cloudy, windy and started to snow.
Jove decided where we were had a good chance and
forecasted the cloud would sometime part to give us a chance. I was doubtful but trusted our guide.
With our gear we trudged into the snow for 10 minutes
until we in the middle of nowhere with not a lot around us but snow and very little light pollution. We set up in anticipation, snd slowly thing improved - snowing had
stopped, the wind died down and the clouds were dissipating. Then it started, and it went on for maybe 90 minutes or so, on and off. We were totally amazed and in
awe of the beauty. We were lucky with such a good showing that night. We happily snapped away trying different exposure lengths and different angles.
Sometimes we just stood there entranced, trying to take it all in, and pinching ourselves in disbelief. Our 2 teenagers were loving it as much as we were!
Our guide set up a fire later, for us to warm up and have a snack and drink, but we were too busy to care about
lesser things.
Before we left our guide took a sit of our family out in the open with the lights in the background. The result showed
his skill and class - he took the time to get the exposure right, the amount of fill in flash from his headlight and the focus. Even after 4 weeks the the memories are so vivid and alive - we will treasure them always.
If you want to maximise yourchances if seeing the Northern Lights, you should seriously consider this tour as that it’s goal but as well they want to get you to take memorable photos of it.
Thanks Jove and thank you Scandinavian Photoadventures, we loved it!
