Top ways to experience Ostermalm and nearby attractions

The area
Neighbourhood: Östermalm
With its high-end shopping facilities and Michelin-starred restaurants, Östermalm is definitely the poshest part of central Stockholm. Here you will find Stockholm’s most majestic residential buildings, a beautiful market hall from 1888 displaying gourmet foods from around the world and the Swedish Royal Dramatic Theatre with its awe-inspiring architecture. At night, legendary nightclubs make the perfect location to observe the natives (and those aspiring to become natives of this exclusive neighborhood) in their natural habitat and to enjoy the latest produce of the Swedish house music scene.

Its always nice to be rich ;-) maybe maybe not I will never know. Here is a part of STockholm where the rich people has lived for ages. Walkaround looking at the houses and maybe try to get a guide or guidebook is the best way to learn something more....

Posh and elegant, Ostermalm contrasts with bohemian and edgy Södermalm and both contrast with regal and ancient Gamla Stan (old town). The great thing about Stockholm is that all three are close together and eminently walkable.

Ostermalm shares the stunning sea views of Södermalm and Gamla Stan but has a more residential feel and more luxe aura.

Some sites to visit:

1) Shopping

a) Bibliotekstan -- exclusive Scandinavian and international offerings; affluent and stylish. Shop here and then head for Östermalmshallen food hall (see below).

b) Palmgren's -- once the royal saddler and now maker of fine leather goods à la Coach etc. for a decent price.

2) Dining

a) Östermalmshallen food hall is close to and easily paired with Bibliotekstan. pairedhas Definitely visit, stroll and dine. Seafood is excellent here and you can get wonderful local fare and desserts as well.

After eating at the food hall, you can easily walk across the street and see the very pretty and charming Hedvig Eleonora Kyrka (Church).

b) Riche -- excellent for lunch or dinner, bistro-like and exciting.

c) Wedholms Fisk -- very possibly the best seafood in all Stockholm.

3) Strandvägen

Come here for gorgeous buildings and wonderful seaside views. Strandvägen is a boulevard completed for the Stockholm World's Fair 1897. It is home to the wealthiest Stockholm residences.

4) Museums

a) Try the excellent Swedish History Museum (Historiska Museet).

Close walking distance to Strandvägen, this is an excellent museum displaying Swedish history from ancient to medieval times -- Vikings! It's excellent for kids of all ages and has good restaurant as well. Do see the "Gold room" in the basement, housing Viking hoards.

b) Halwyll Museum

The Hallwyl Museum is a very pleasant and easy visit. The mansion fronts Berzellii Park (named for the famous Swedish chemist) in Central Stockholm. The museum is surrounded by excellent restaurants and boutiques and includes its own inner courtyard restaurant (open during Summer).

You enter the mansion through a stately Venetian façade on Hamngatan (Port Street). Admission is free but you can pay for a guided tour getting you not only explanations but access to rooms otherwise closed off.

The town home was designed by Swedish architect Isak Gustaf Clason and you will see his works prominently elsewhere in Stockholm (e.g., The Nordic Museum; Östermalmshallen -- Östermalm Food Hall described above). Clason deployed a variety of styles (mostly Mediterranean) and spared no expense in design and craftsmanship. The home deployed state of the art technology for its time: bathrooms, telephones, central heating, electric lighting in every room and eventually an elevator. The interiors are late Victorian and early Edwardian. They are beautiful.

The owners (a Count and Countess) were a prolific collectors of objects d'art, Chinese bronzes, statuary, tapestry, paintings, porcelain, books and manuscripts. The Count, a Swiss-born military man turned Swedish citizen, had and you can see his formidable collection of ancient weaponry (swords, muskets, pistols) and knightly armor.

Entire rooms are devoted to the collections. I found the upstairs gallery the most remarkable. Its walls are filled with oil paintings, and I happily stumbled on two Bruegels (The Peasant Wedding) and a Cranach (Venus).

SUMMARY

Östermalm is stylish, elegant and beautiful. Come walk its beautiful streets, shop its excellent boutiques, enjoy its excellent museums and savor some of Sweden's best meals.

We stayed at the Parlan in this very nice section of Stockholm, east and northeast of the center of the city. The Saluhall, a classic food market is there, as well as lovely churches and a number of museums. There are a number of cafes and restaurants in the area, but not the number you would find in a tourist area. We found the supermarkets to be relatively inexpensive and there was some take out spots, especially Thai food. On the south is the great street, Strandvagen, that runs along the harbor. Busses run along that street and the Bus 62 runs north and south through Ostermalm. There is also a metro stop right by the Saluhall.

The only thing destroying the peace are those noisy motorcycles that emit deafening loud noises, it is incredible that's actually legal in Sweden.

Östermalm is a fashionable part of Stockholm which is worth a long walk. You will be astonished about the very well kept buildings and the grandiose architecture. Besides this there are several famous buildings and places too - Stockholm Stadion, Östermalms Saluhall, Stureplan (with a nearby Galleria and fantastic Spa). Östermalm is also the place where you will find genuine shops with high quality of their products, galleries and small specialty shops. There is a rich range of Restaurants and Cafes. As an alternative you can choose from several parks - Humlegården is just one of them. Strandvägen will impress with the direct access to the water and boats. It is easy to plan your day. There are a lot and good information that you can use to plan your day in Östermalm.

Östermalm is full of exclusive second hand shops, good restaurants and bars. Enjoy the architecture of the homes to some of the richest Swedes as this is the posh part of Stockholm.

This is the posh side of town. If you're looking for expensive clothing and fancy dinners, this is where to go.

The buildings in Östermalm are beautiful and there are even a few parks where you can hang, but the overall feeling of this neighborhood says "money".

However, that doesn't mean that people don't get drunk here. There's plenty of bars and parties goin' on as well. It's all more expensive, that's all.

Ostermalm is nice to walk around. It's a good place for shopping, rather similar to Normalm. It feels like a bustling city here with grand buildings and fancy looking restaurants. Along the water is nice and there's a nice walkway full of trees down the middle of the main road beside the water.

If you want to do a spot of shopping I'd recommend a walk through Ostermalm - they have an "Urban Outfitters" which surprised me, which is a trendy shop found in a couple of cities in England.
