About
Nordiska museet brings you stories about life and people in the Nordics in an iconic building. It is Swedens biggest cultural history museum and this year we celebrate our 150th anniversary. Architect Isak Gustaf Clason's magnificent building Nordiska museet – an experience in itself – has a life-size 1940s apartment and a monumental oak statue of Gustav I Vasa, king of Sweden in 1523–1560. The restaurant offers traditional cooking with freshly baked bread and pastries from our own bakery.

Neighbourhood: Djurgården & Djurgårdsbrunn
The island of Djurgården and its northern mainland extension, Djurgårdsbrunn, impress with a mix of nature and an abundance of museums, while being located in walking distance to Stockholm’s city center. Djurgården not only invites visitors to take endless walks through a beautiful park landscape without having to leave the city, but also offers an incredible range of entertainment facilities, such as an open air museum which specializes in the Swedish way of life pre-industrialization, the renowned Vasa Museum with its legendary sailing ship, and Sweden’s most famous amusement park Gröna Lund, which is more than a 100 years old.

Be prepared for crowds, I waited over half an hour to get into the main display, "Nordic Life". Many items displayed in dimly lit rooms by century, quite interesting. Several other floors of information too.

Curiosity is the desire to always learn and know new things.
And it was the curiosity to understand something more about the Nordic peoples that led me to visit this museum.
Initially I was hesitant but room after room I understood many things.
The descriptions are also in English, there are many explanatory videos, educational panels and many captions.
The exhibition on the Arctic is also beautiful.
Personally I liked it and I recommend it to those like me who are always curious to discover new things.

We wanted to see the famous exhibition Nordbor so we went into the hordes of tourists and went up to the third floor. Our review was: like that. Overworked, overloaded and rather superficial. Cramped rooms with copious amounts of stuff in gave a slightly claustrophobic feel. The films with clean and tidy actors who would portray “ordinary” poor people from our history felt unnatural. For children and tourists this is surely a perfect exhibition but not for us who know our history.

Hej!

This blew us away - it was a really fascinating museum. They do an excellent job illustrating and explaining the history of Sweden through the centuries. We happened to go on our first day in Stockholm, and honestly I kept thinking about what I learned at the museum throughout our entire vacation in Sweden. The displays do a great job explaining the history as well as illustrating it through videos of individuals (playing roles). The exhibits about 20th century Sweden were really interesting too - explains so much about the national psyche. Highly recommend. If I return to Stockholm (which I hope to do) I would happily go back to this museum!

Easy access from the tram line connecting all locations from the ferry landing on Djuragarden Island. For handicapped access, look for the entrance to the right of the staircase at the front. This leads to an elevator to the reception floor, where wheelchairs can be ordered. Friendly staff, interesting exhibits and displays.

It felta lot like strolling through my father’s barns although more neatly and chronologically displayed. Each piece of antiquity deserves its time to be exposed and preserved. The building itself is remarkable and though it appears in some form of transition, underused and tedious to stroll through.

This amazing museum takes you on a journey from the late 16th century up to present day of Sweden, it's people, and the surrounding Scandinavian countries. You can spend hours walking through the amazing exhibitions. Priced at 170 swedish krone for adults. Children go free. I
If you are visiting The Vasa or Abba Museums, make time for this one. It is a short walk from both, and well worth it

We found ourselves in this museum by pure chance xD
Very interesting museum especially for those who want to learn more about the history of the populations of the north.
There are several rooms dedicated to different centuries and in each of them there are objects of various kinds, clothes and educational panels in English that provide information.

The building of the museum is beautiful, especially its facade.
Inside, a very large museum, divided by sectors that show from the environmental characteristics, as much as, mainly, the Nordic customs and articles.
It is worth seeing, and even pass by the great restaurant/café.

I visited this museum a few years ago, and was extremely impressed by the main exhibition about the Sami. It was on the top floor, with the display cabinets overlooking the magnificent atrium. The artifacts were beautifully displayed and well explained; with some excellent maps. But this exhibition has gone.

Today's flagship exhibition "Nordic Life" on the top floor is not in the same league. The glorious atrium is now largely hidden. The explanatory texts are too wordy (yet often quite woolly), with huge cabinets stuffed full of artifacts. There are long videos, which you can't restart - if you arrive in the middle of a video, you have to wait for it to finish. The exhibition uses reenactments, but these add nothing.

The Arctic exhibition on level 2 suffers from some of the same faults. Additionally, some texts are at knee height in small fonts, and therefore hard to read.

The British Fashion exhibition is small but successful.

Hello! We are sorry that the exhibition did not meet your expectations. The history of the Sami people is part of the Nordbor exhibition, which is appreciated by many. Here you can read all the texts about the exhibition and watch the films at your own pace: https://guide.nordiskamuseet.se/en/ Best regards, Lydia at Nordiska museet
