About
Prince Eugen's Waldemarsudde, originally the home of Prince Eugen, is now among the most-visited art museums in Sweden. In the Mansion the Prince's Private Apartments remain mostly unchanged, while the two upper floors and the Gallery building are used for temporary exhibitions or for exhibiting works by the Prince or from his collections. The estate is set in a beautiful parkland, featuring centuries-old oak trees. Its situation by the inlet to Stockholm harbour presents the visitor with stunning views of the water. Welcome to Sweden's most beautiful art museum!

Neighbourhood: Djurgården & Djurgårdsbrunn
The island of Djurgården and its northern mainland extension, Djurgårdsbrunn, impress with a mix of nature and an abundance of museums, while being located in walking distance to Stockholm’s city center. Djurgården not only invites visitors to take endless walks through a beautiful park landscape without having to leave the city, but also offers an incredible range of entertainment facilities, such as an open air museum which specializes in the Swedish way of life pre-industrialization, the renowned Vasa Museum with its legendary sailing ship, and Sweden’s most famous amusement park Gröna Lund, which is more than a 100 years old.

Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde Is a nice touristic place to visit if you are in Stockholm. Its easy to reach by tram no 7 from central Stockholm. There is a beautiful museum and the entrance is about 15 euro for a pensioner. There is a nearby cafe and the view of the water is marvelous. Dont miss it.

Filled with personal artwork and photos of the houses former owner it was more like stepping into someones well appointed home than a musuem, then again until it was turned into a musuem it WAS the princes home. The displays were interesting with the top floor housing contemporary sculptures, and the gallery exhbit devoted to the works of an artist colony from the 20th century.
the weather wasnt the best when i went so i didnt view the grounds but i could see how lovely it would be to do on a nicer day

Beautiful waterfront palace in the Djurgården peninsula, in an enchanting setting. The magnificent rooms are rich in the works of Prince Eugens Waldemarsudde and other artists like Munch who stayed there. Magical walk to recommend.

The area is lovely and we enjoyed a long walk to get here. The etate’s main building have some very nice periodic rooms. On the second and third floor there are exhibitions. We really enjoyed the future fashion exhibition showing young nordic designers. The gardens are charming as is the view.

The moment we entered the first rooms we knew this was going to be a special and memorable attraction. And so it was.

Prins Eugen was fortunate as the fourth son in being allowed to devote himself to his Bohemian and artistic passions. His mother Queen Sophia, of German origin, was progressive having received a liberal education and she wished all her children to have same. Thus Eugen attended an ordinary school and then Uppsala university.

He was a fervent patron of the arts and determined to collect not only according to his own artistic interests but supporting the wider Scandinavian art movements of the time.

When this palace was completed in 1905 Prins Eugen marked it with a grand inaugural dinner of the intelligentsia and artistic communities, interestingly all male.

The Prins was a very accomplished artist and recognised as such. His metier was landscape and he pivoted away from full realism. Many wonderful examples of his own artistic works are here.

A profusion of marvellous works by other famous Scandinavian artists are shown. Notables are Carl Larsson and Richard Bergh. The latter's Death and the Maiden is particularly powerful.

Picturesquely situated on the shore, lovely waterside walks are laid out. We finished with a delightful hour long walk around the whole estate.

We visit Stockholm about once a year and we always visit the Waldemarsudde. Not only it's a beautiful spot, the house itself (and the content) is interesting as well, so are the exhibitions and don't forget to stroll around in the garden.

I lived in Stockholm for two and a half years in the mid-1970s, and I enjoyed going to many of the Stockholm museums. I've returned for short visits since, and while I can't go to all the museums every time I'm there, I always go to Waldemarsudde. The older building, originally Prins Eugens residence, was designed by the same architect (F. Boberg) who designed Thielska gallery. A newer building has temporary art exhibits and a gift shop. The older building has paintings by Prins Eugen and his contemporaries. The rooms are beautifully decorated and there are always many flowers.

One of the most enjoyable things about visiting this museum is that one can take the streetcar from Normalmstorg.

I have a soft spot for this place. From Downtown just outside Kulturehuset, there is an aboveground train that is new which takes you directly to Waldemarsudde. So it is easy access for visitors. Once there there is a lovely garden and waterfront you can enjoy. The entrance has a museum of exhibits that is also connected to the former home of Prince Eugene. A perceptive eye, will notice that the prince had a bustling artistry in the impressionistic style with a penchant for the male form. This is a charming home and although lovely, is not pretentious in scale or decor. It is special and gives one an insight of being royal, gay, and privileged in Europe at the beginning of the 20th century. Outside are some lovely sculptures, some quite famous, and closeby is a windmill that is charming. A couple minutes away is Rosendahl which has outside cafes and an abundance of flowers that one can pick and pay for, which makes for a nice coupling on an outing before returning to the bustling Stockholm center.

Location's magnificent, view enchanting, ambiance refreshing. Best confine your visit to the grounds, as the paintings on exhibit are just awful. We briefly glimpsed some pictures of mostly dead animals. That was the special exhibit. The permanent collection consists of failed attempts to imitate belle epoque styles. Someone on this site mentioned that the prince missed out on being king and hid out here with his brushes and oils. Hereditary monarchs and art seldom mix well, and this is no exception.

Restaurant very simple but can recommend.
