Sodermalm is a less-touristy and beautiful area in Stockholm. It was not overrun by tourists when I visited but had a nice crowd that was not overwhelming like Old Town. It's I truly one if the nicer area in the city and the view from there is worth the visit. It has many restaurants and a generally more laid back feel. A definite must-visit.

Södermalm is one of the districts of Stockholm in the central part of the city, located on the island of the same name. Södermalm is connected to the surrounding areas by a number of bridges.
There is an observation deck from which you can see a panorama of the entire city.

Oh my I loved everything about this place. It’s not only beautiful but it’s reach in nature and the buildings are gorgeous. The weather had us walking throughout the area for an entire day. Had some good seafood and drinks. Absolutely breathtaking.

This is Stockholm. It's cool and laid back. It feels like Berlín in the best sense of the word, yet it's Sweden and all nice. I went with kids but seems like the place to hang out for drinks

This is the part of Sthlm which before was rundown, not fun to be in and had a bad sound to the locals. This was back in the days when the in crowd did not know bettter.

It all started with people moving here, artists etc, beacause the prices of housing was cheaper than in Vasastan or Östermalm.
The people who lives here often work in the media or as artists of some kind.

Today the price is the same as the rest of the down town area, this is counted as down town and the asking-price is about 60 000 kronor / sq feet or more dependending on what area of Södermalm.

Now days this is a hip island that has great parks, water you can fish or bath in, great for boating and you can walk around the whole island, stopping at cafes or bars, and there is a nice marina called "koopen" marina in Hornstull.
This is the place to hang out. All of Hornstull has great cafes and in summer the whole area turns in to a party.

The soccer team för Södermalm is "Bajjen" which color is green and white, you often see this around supporting the local team.

The island is knows for its cheap nightlife, and you can spend your night at a classy hotel such as Rival at Mariatorget or go drinking at Medborgarplatsen, a great way to kill time in the summer, eveyone else does.

The best way to go Södermalm is to walk from the central station, pass the old town, maybe stop for drinks at Tabac or the boat Flyt? and then on to Södermalm, here you can watch the cruise ships or just sit people watching for hours.

Take some time to explore this island, it is my home, and I"d love for you to see it.

Welcome to Södermalm.

Södermalm is a great area to aimlessly walk around in! I suggest visiting the photographic museum most of all.

Södermalm has a lot of great bars and restaurants a few suggestions are:

Nada Bar - cozy bar with great drinks!
Akkurat - both a great bar and restaurant (amazing selection of beers, European cuisine)
Frantzen - truly one of the greatest restaurants in Stockholm (Japanese cuisine)
Oliwer Twist - casual bar with a nice atmosphere

Another great thing to do is to shop for vintage clothing and whatnots - a few good stores are: Deadwood, Beyond Retro and In The Mood - check them out!

Along the waterfront, you'll find several lookout points to get great photographs of Stockholm.

I hope you enjoy your time on Södermalm!

Södermalm is primarily a neighborhood with residential areas, but there are also some areas with a high concentration of restaurants and bars. The view from Södermalm over the rest of the city is very beautiful because it is a height difference. Otherwise, this may not be the most beautiful part of Stockholm. The buildings here are generally much younger than the Old Town for example. The district likes to be cool, hip and bohemian. Unfortunately, this is now more of a facade intended to attract tourists. The shops and restaurants are often hard-designed and updated continually to follow trends. It´s not especially genuine anymore and the prices are quite high, both in shops and in restaurants. The focus of operations is also essentially the adolescents or young adults. A sad development is that the area nowadays has a very high crime rate. Nearly 300 cases of pickpocketing per month this summer, according to statistics. The streets are also full of beggars they are basically at every street corner and it looks very untidy with all the possessions they spread on the sidewalks. They may also in their desperation for money be very intrusive. The quietest parts that can still be very enjoyable to have a stroll in are the areas around the island closest to the water.

I ventured to Sodermalm whilst staying in Gamla Stan its a quick walk across one of Stockholm's many bridges. The suburb has a bohemian atmosphere full of young local people & many second hand and vintage shops.

There are plenty of cafes, restaurants, sushi bars and pubs too.

The shops were interesting for window shopping - boutiques, kitchen , glassware, vintage, & design showrooms but nothing really "wow" caught my eye.

I enjoyed strolling around especially since there seemed to be more locals here than in Gamla Stan. The walk from Mariatorget to Gotgaten gives a wonderful impression of the local suburb however at times it can be hilly so wear sensible shoes.

For views take a stroll at the top of Soder you will get some panoramic views of Gamla Stan excellent for taking photo's
