The area
Neighbourhood: Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen
Gamla Stan is Stockholm’s historic old town and home to the Swedish Royal Palace. It’s the most central island of Stockholm and accompanied by the small island of Riddarholmen, mainly known for its famous Riddarholm Church. Gamla Stan tends to be a bit touristy at times but is definitely worth visiting: take a stroll past the well-preserved buildings and through the small (and also Sweden’s narrowest) alleys, which will make you feel like you’ve travelled back in time. This neighborhood offers a great combination of historical buildings and traditional Swedish restaurants.

The square is also Home to the Nobel Prize Museum. The Christmas markets were on when we were there in late December, which added to the experience. Worth a visit if you are in Old Town.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 December 2023

It's part of the Gamla Stan old town area, but not marked by some of the tourist honky tonk that one finds nearby. Photogenic.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 July 2024
- CristinelRomania1,393 contributionsColorful buildings, positive vibesBeautiful colored buildings in Gamla Stan, sending you a positive vibe. In the same square is located Nobel Prize Museum and it is a good opportunity to pay a visit. Otherwise, as long as the square is a well known tourist attraction could become very easily crowded.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 19 September 2024

I’m at a loss as to all the positive reviews I read about Stockholm at Christmas and particularly this Christmas Market.
It is is absolutely tiny it will take you no more than 10-15 minutes to walk round, there is very little in the way of food/drink. Coming from the UK the expectation would also be that Glögg served at markets like this would have alcohol in it but it doesn’t here not that they tell you that, the cups it is served in are also espresso cup size.
This market is open til 6pm, there are no other markets open any later than this most seem to be 4pm closing so there is nothing to do in the evenings.
Do your research before coming here, do not come to Stockholm expecting a Christmas Market experience with loads to see and good food and drink you will be very disappointed, go to somewhere in Germany.

Stortorget was the absolute centre in the Old Stockholm, what is now known as Gamla Stan. The brick buildings that one can see today are from late Medieval time.
I think it is marvelous, but I am biased since many of my ancestors were tradesmen, mayors and city court jurors in Stockholm and many lived around Stortorget.
I have never tried a city tour though.

In the middle of the old town you will find this square lined with colourful old houses. It is very photogenic but also very difficult to get good photos because of all the people there wanting to do the same. The Nobel museum is here and there are plenty of eateries and shops. Worth stopping and looking above the people to see the magnificent buildings.

This is just a square in Gamla Stan, with the Nobel Museum on one side, which has a nice little cafe in it. But do try the little restaurant on the right side of the museum as you are facing the square. Very very old, and terrific food. Small, but with a neat basement space. Like being in the catacombs.

Maybe Stockholm is prettier in the winter with snow and ice, but this square and the area around it is full of beautiful boutiques, craft shops, secondhand shops, little cafes etc. and the architecture & colour on the square itself is a delight. I’m not quite sure why people would give it a bad review…granted there are souvenir shops too but it’s a major tourist area in a big capital city and we thoroughly enjoyed seeing every part of Gamla Stan, it’s beautiful and full of character with its cobbled streets and wooden horses!

Stortorget is the main public square located in Gamla Stan, central Stockholm. This is the oldest square in the city, dating back as far as approximately 1420. It’s a very charming, picturesque area. We went in the cold of winter, which afforded us the opportunity to visit their Christmas village. They do the Christmas holiday much different than we do in the States. We tend to overdo it with an abundance of decorations, Santa/reindeer, lights, trees etc. Theirs is much simpler with different types of food and drinks being sold. It’s almost a rustic feeling. You’ll also see personal made handcrafts as well. It’s also mostly confined to this particular section of the city. This is definitely worth braving the cold to see. During the non-winter months, this area is still worth seeing for any type of tourist. I know I’ll be back.

Beautiful old town. Alight at Glam Stan station and walk through the old town to get to the centre.
I enjoyed walking through the old town and luckily it was not too crowded or busy. Easy stroll into the tiny alleys will yield surprises.

This is a small square in Gamla Stan. The coloirful buildings looks similar to some in Amsterdam and Copenhagen. Except for these colourful buildings there is not much livilines except for vsitors posing for photos. Enjoy.

In the heart of the old town, Stortorget is one of Stockholm's most iconic places. It is a truly particular square and, in addition to hosting the Nobel Prize museum, it has a truly picturesque appearance, with its iconic colorful buildings, one of the symbols of this city. A postcard view.

It is the oldest square in the city and is located in the historical center of Sweden, starting point to tour the area. The Nobel museum is also located there. Surrounded by stalls for eating and drinking local or imported drinks. Highly recommended
