Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Very centrum, but still peaceful naturreservat and museum in Uddevalla. Not too long walk for kids either. Enjoy your day here and grab a picnic!

It's a hidden gem - small, out of the way (unless you're already planning a walk through the nature reserve which includes the shell banks, also highly recommended) and fascinating if you have an interest in natiural history. The semi-fossilised shells left in huge mounds by the retreating glaciers at the end of ice age are a unique phenomenon from this area and all the best specimens are preserved here.

In the north east parts of Uddevalla in the edge of an industrial area you’ll find these remnants from the end of the last Ice Age approximately 10000 years ago. The altitude over the sea level is about 90 meters and the banks of shells from these Ice Age Molluscs and Balanidaes are about 15 meters deep. At that time the earth crust had been pressed down under the sea level by the weight of kilometers of ice. Later the Yoldia Sea (Baltic Sea) opened up against Atlantic Ocean through a sound over Uddevalla and the melting water met nutrient salt water and it became for a long period of time very good conditions for these life forms. Scientists have found about 100 different species in the banks plus some boons from mammalians. The Shell Banks have been under very heavy exploitation during the past years and were finally saved 5 to 12 when only 10% was left and are now a National Reserve Park. The Park is also hosting a lot of lime loving flowers and some of them are very attractive to butterflies, so during the summer you will also find a rich flora and fauna. The small but very interesting Museum exhibition is open June to August, Tuesday to Sunday 11 to 17, but you can walk around in the banks all of the year whenever you like. I can strongly recommend a visit.
