About
Welcome to one of the largest botanical gardens in Northern Europe. The cultivated part occupies 20 acres and holds about 20 000 different plants and trees. It is a botanical garden with a strong emphasis on horticulture and the garden is divided into different sections linked by lawns with fine trees and shrubs. You will find a kitchen garden, a herb garden, perennial and annual borders, a Japanese glade, a rhododendron valley and a stunning rock garden with a waterfall. In the bulb garden you find species that are not grown anywhere else. The Greenhouses are closed and new ones will be built. The garden is bordering a nature reserve where also the arboretum is located.

These botanical gardens really are some of the best we have seen anywhere in Europe. The site is spread over a huge area and includes lovely perennial beds that are very well labelled, Horticultural beds including a specialist dahlia area, a Japanese dell, herb garden, a rock garden, a rhododendron area, alpine house and an arboretum. Sadly the glasshouses are currently closed as new ones are in course of construction although these will not be ready until 2028.
All the gardens are immaculate.
There is also a shop and cafe which makes a good half day visit. Although you can wander into the gardens without paying, there is a nominal charge to enter, tickets are bought in the shop near the entrance.

The garden has a good app for walking tours. It's spacious and has many types of plants. I wouldn't call it the highlight of my trip, but it was a nice way to spend an hour. I'm sure that it's even lovelier in spring/summer.
Note: If you take the tram from the city center, you'll need to cross the tracks (at the designated overpass) and walk along an access road to get there. There is a large park on the other side of the tracks (on the same side where you arrive) -- don't confuse that for the botanical garden.

Definitely a place you should visit if you are in Gothenburg, and particularly to the Håberget Viewpoint - it is a bit steep and some part is between rocks, at least in the path I took, so be aware. All the gardens and the locations are very nice and pretty. There are moments where you can forget you are close to a city, given how quiet it can get.

The garden is both lovely and huge so give yourself plenty of time to walk about and maybe sit down and have a snack at the cafe. Because of it's size even though it is a popular spot once you get away from the entrance it doesn't feel crowded.
The greenhouse is closed but there is so many other things to see that it isn't a issue.
Plus it is free to enter.

I recently visited Gothenburg for work and went running through the Botanical Garden during a free afternoon. The garden is really beautiful (although I was a bit early for the best display of flowers) and well maintained. Although it was very busy on a lovely spring Sunday, one could still find some piece and quiet by straying from the main path. I also found some great gifts in the gift shop, so overall I was very pleased with my short visit.

Plan on spending an entire day if you have the time. There is so much to see and explore. The varied gardens are beautiful and the signage is excellent. We spent 4+ hours there and left because we needed to somewhere else. Definitely a must see.

One of the first places to visit when in Gothenburg must be Botaniska. Any time of the year, but preferably when sunny, the botanical garden is always beautiful! But even more in May or June, when all the flowers have bloomed and are showing their colours.

Whether you are an expert in plants or you just wanna wander and enjoy the view of a beautiful place, you need to visit the Botaniska.
