A short ferry trip back in time.
After a short time on the ferry you embark in a place steeped in history. Obviously as a giant fortification it's military background for almost 200 yrs is worth soaking up. The museums are amazing with explanations in English and Swedish so made very easy to understand. You could easily spend all day here or fly around in a couple of hours. The visitors centre and many cafes keep you fed and watered.
Dear Trebor5417, thank you for your review, glad you enjoyed your visit to Suomenlinna! Suomenlinna is a great place to learn about some of the important events in Finnish history while exploring the impressive fortification islands. As a unique example of the European military architecture of its time, Suomenlinna is also a Unesco world heritage site. There are six different museums in Suomenlinna. One can for example visit the Ehrensvärd museum, which is the house of the founder of the fortress, or the decommissioned submarine Vesikko. If one wants to take a break from exploring, there are indeed several restaurants and cafes on the islands. More information about the sights and services in Suomenlinna can be found from our online guide at guide.suomenlinna.fi. Welcome again to Suomenlinna!

Fantastic day out in good weather
What a fantastic place to go for the day or even half a day. Catch the ferry over and sit up top. It’s not far and relatively cheap. Walk around the expansive fortress and in the tunnels that run inside the big forts walls. With stunning sea vistas and plenty of places to stop for a drink, a meal or the loo it’s perfect for everyone. Clear easily marked paths make for a good day out.
Dear 854DP, thank you for your kind review! We are very glad to hear you enjoyed your visit to Suomenlinna. The ferry trip to Suomenlinna, which takes some 15 minutes, is a great chance to take in views of Helsinki from the sea as well as smaller islands on the way. Suomenlinna offers a lot to see and explore, including the awesome fortifications, tunnels and beautiful nature. There are indeed a lot of services in Suomenlinna, including several restaurants and cafes, six museums and a shop selling local arts and handicrafts. To see all the main sights and explore the islands in a responsible way, we recommend that you follow the blue route, marked with blue signposts along the way. One can find the blue route and information about services and sights in Suomenlinna from our online guide at guide.suomenlinna.fi. Hope to see you again soon in Suomenlinna!

Visit in the morning for a quieter experience
A stroll around the fortress is a lovely way to spend a morning. Views across the water are beautiful, and to garner a perspective on the way this island has been used - and continues to be - is interesting in understanding more about Helsinki and Finland. Some tips for your visit: Wearing good walking shoes here is helpful, particularly around the walls. There are many cobblestones and areas that are not easy to navigate for those with strollers / prams / wheelchairs, or those who may be unsteady on their feet. Plan to head out on a morning ferry to enjoy the island before the throngs. In the summer, the queues for the ferry at Market Square are long and it makes for many, many people on the island at once. Make sure to buy the Helsinki Card for your visit here (and the city in general), otherwise you’ll be paying an entry fee to each building on the island that you may wish to visit.
Dear La_tiburona, thank you for your review! In Suomenlinna, one can spend the day exploring the sea fortress and beautiful islands. Exploring the fortress and islands is free, but the museums in Suomenlinna, excluding the Customs Museum, have an entry fee. The six museums in Suomenlinna include for example the Ehrensvärd museum, which is the house of the founder of the fortress, and the decommissioned submarine Vesikko. It is indeed important to wear good walking shoes and take into account that some roads on the islands are paved with cobblestones or may otherwise have difficult terrain. More information about the accessibility of Suomenlinna and a more accessible route can be found from our website at https://www.suomenlinna.fi/en/visitor/accessibility/. Hope to see you again soon in Suomenlinna! Stop by the Suomenlinna visitor centre next to the ferry pier to get the best tips for your visit.

    High point of Helsinki trip
This island combined many excellent things. The ferry ride to it was nice and inexpensive. The walks around the island were historic. The museum is good, especially the video, not to be missed. the walk around the ramparts overlooking the water was spectacular. A snake crossed our path right in front of us, a real surprise. We had a great day here.
Dear kenj531, Thank you for your lovely review! We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your visit to the sea fortress. Suomenlinna is truly a wonderful place to admire the beautiful archipelago nature and to explore Finnish history. The ferry trip is indeed an essential part of the fortress visit, and the ferries run all throughout the year! Like you said, The Suomenlinna Museum is a great place to learn more about the history of the fortress. Joining a guided tour is also a good option for that! We hope to see you again soon in Suomenlinna. Make sure to stop by at Suomenlinna Visitor Centre upon arrival, we will gladly give you some tips for your visit! Fun place to visit
Had a great trip across the bay and enjoyed our summer stroll to see the sites of the fort. great food places, nice trails, great spot close to Helsinki. We took the city pass / tram pass on a service vessel across the bay. I think we used our MPC card.. nobody ever checked it... saved money from going on the tourist boats
Dear amorace, Thank you for reviewing us! It's truly lovely to hear that you had a pleasant visit to Suomenlinna. The sea fortress is indeed a great place to enjoy being outdoors, and there are several charming cafés and restaurants scattered around the islands. The best way to see the most important sights of Suomenlinna is to follow the Blue Route. The Blue Route is also a safe and responsible way to explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Find the route and more information about Suomenlinna from our online guide at guide.suomenlinna.fi. The HSL ferry is indeed a nice and easy way to reach Suomenlinna, and the short sea trip is a lovely experience in itself! The ferry is a part of the local public transport system, and you can hop on it all year round! During the summer season, one can also arrive by waterbus. Welcome again soon to the fortress! Stop by at Suomenlinna Visitor Centre to get the best tips! Best regards, Anna/ Suomenlinna Visitor Centre

    So fun to explore!
It's hard to add anything to what everyone else has written about this place. It is definitely a must-do in Helsinki and it definitely takes at least three hours to get the most of the island. Don't miss going to the dry dock, which was one of the biggest in the world when it was built. It looks like you can't walk around, because it's a working area, but you can and should. The museum is great and the introductory video is very helpful, but the joy is walking all over the island, through all the fort entrances and tunnels and on the bastions and bulwarks and by the cannons and the King's Gate. The ferry over is nice and there are departures a few times an hour - just check the schedule before you go.
Dear RYC88, thank you very much for your review and recommendation! We are happy to hear that you enjoyed everything from the ferry trip and the Suomenlinna Museum to exploring the fortifications on foot. One can indeed easily spend the entire day at the fortress getting to know the historical sights and enjoying the services of museums, cafés and restaurants. The Suomenlinna dry dock is indeed an impressive sight to see. The dry dock area itself is not accessible to the public, but one can observe the dock operations from the observation deck, located near the Great Courtyard. You can find your way to all the sights with the help of Suomenlinna online guide at guide.suomenlinna.fi. We are also always happy to help at Suomenlinna Visitor Centre, which is located right next to the ferry pier. The Blue Route is the absolute best way to see all the main sights of Suomenlinna. It is important to stay on marked routes while walking around the islands. This way we can all participate in protecting the unique architecture and beautiful archipelago nature of UNESCO World Heritage Site Suomenlinna! We hope to see you again soon at the fortress! Great visit to a series of connected islands with lots to see
We caught the ferry from the market square to the fortress. There were 3 ferries per hour so not too long to wait if you miss one. Tickets are required and available from machines on the dockside. The journey is about 10 minutes. On Soumenlinna you have lots of choices. There are a few museums, a church or just a great walk. We visited the cannons defending the port with great views and there is an old submarine. It was a thoroughly enjoyable visit and we didn’t pay anything except the ferry journey. Some of the museums have fees to enter but we didn’t really have the time.
Dear BigMerk, thank you for your review, glad you enjoyed your visit to Suomenlinna! One can get to Suomenlinna easily on the HSL ferry which leaves from the Market square and is part of public transport. The ferry journey to Suomenlinna, which takes some 15 minutes, is a great opportunity to admire views of Helsinki from the sea. There is a lot to see in the historical sea fortress. To see all the main sights, we recommend that you follow the blue route, which takes you through the three main islands, all the way to the impressive King's gate and the bastion fortifications on Kustaanmiekka island. Kustaanmiekka island also has big sand embankments with old cannons and stunning sea views. There are six museums in Suomenlinna, including the decommissioned submarine Vesikko. All of the museums, apart from the Customs museum, have an entry fee, but exploring the fortress and the islands is free. One can also visit the Suomenlinna church, which is simultaneously also a lighthouse, for a small entry fee. More information about the sights and services in Suomenlinna can be found from our online guide at guide.suomenlinna.fi. Welcome again to Suomenlinna!

Great historical place, also for relaxing or for adventure
We went in July, so it was probably the most popular time of the year. There were so many tourists, that we Finns felt like we were suddenly abroad. Transportation and facilities worked well, so don't be alarmed if you see a huge crowd. Suomenlinna is spacious, so if you want, it's easy to get out of the crowds as well. I recommend you take your time to explore Suomenlinna. The fortress has many passages inside the walls, so if possible, take a good flashlight with you and go on a adventure! This is fun with kids too. When exploring the islands, it's important to remember that people live there and some areas are private. Private areas are marked.
Dear johannakQ9920EN, Thank you very much for your review. Suomenlinna is indeed a great destination for history enthusiasts, families or those who just want to enjoy the unique atmosphere of the fortress. The transportation and the services on the islands do indeed work smoothly, and Suomenlinna can be visited all year round! Like you said, Suomenlinna is home to about 800 people, so in order to respect the privacy of the residents, one should follow marked routes. The best route for seeing the main sights in a responsible way is the Blue Route, which can be found on the maps of Suomenlinna, and from Suomenlinna online guide. Taking a flashlight is a great tip if you want to explore the tunnels inside the fortress walls! See you again soon in Suomenlinna! Best regards, Anna / Suomenlinna Visitor Centre

    Nice place for a stroll
While stopped in Helsinki for a cruise, we ventured on our own to the Sea Fortress. It was a great place to walk around. Due to the Midsummer holiday, some things were closed or had reduced hours. Despite that, we had an enjoyable kind walking the designated route (well-marked), stopping at the museum cafe and dipping our toes in the sea.
Dear kmthoennes222, Thank you for giving us a review! It's lovely to hear that you had a nice time exploring the sea fortress during Midsummer. Suomenlinna online guide is a great tool to have with you while walking along the Blue Route, and from there one can also check the opening hours to all the services! The feature is very useful especially during holidays like Midsummer. Take a look at Suomenlinna online guide at guide.suomenlinna.fi. The Blue Route, marked with blue signposts, is indeed the best way to see the historical sights of Suomenlinna. The museums, cafés, restaurants etc. are also worth trying and experiencing. Welcome again soon to the fortress. See you at Suomenlinna Visitor Centre, where we are happy to give you the best tips for your visit! Best regards, Anna / Suomenlinna Visitor Centre

Great way to spend a day
We had an enjoyable time and the weather on Monday was also great so we got to do plenty of walking and thanks to having the Helsinki card we also got to experience most of the museums too and I personally enjoyed the Submarine and Military Museums. If you are going with a family then I would advise you to bring your own food and drinks and have a picnic and there is plenty of space to do your own thing if desired. The journey is only 15 minutes to the island and that trip was also enjoyable so this was definitely one of my favourite activities to do in Helsinki and its history is fascinating.
Dear T K, Thank you for your nice review. Lovely to hear that you enjoyed your day trip to Suomenlinna fortress. The total of 6 museums operating in Suomenlinna all offer indeed interesting museum exhibitions. Submarine Vesikko showcases exciting interiors of a Finnish made submarine used in Second World War battles. To learn more about the interesting history of the fortress, visit the Suomenlinna Museum which stays open all year round. If you don't have a Helsinki card, then tickets to museums can be bought online from Suomenlinna Shop or at the museums. On a warm summer day Suomenlinna offers lovely spots for a family picnic as you say. Additionally, there is a good selection of cafés and restaurants for every taste and budget. Please find opening hours for them in the opening hours calendar on our website. As you also mention, the sea journey to the fortress is very quick, only 15 minutes. The Suomenlinna ferry operates all year round so it is easy to visit Suomenlinna any time. The sea journey is a unique part of the visiting experience. Welcome soon again to Suomenlinna! Stop by Suomenlinna Visitor Centre next to the main ferry pier, to get the best tips of the day. Best regards, Annamaria/ Suomenlinna Visitor Centre

A short, cheap, ferry trip across the water for Helsinki harbour is this interesting island fortification. Building started in 1748 and has been used on various war footings since that time. Dotted around the, somewhat tiring, pathways of the island are many old relics in shape of cannons, derricks etc etc. A wonderful few hours wandering with, thank goodness, a few bars and restaurants. Well worth a visit and, even better, if you are lucky enough to enjoy good weather as we did.

Dear normantalktalk, Thank you so much for the review, we are delighted to hear you enjoyed your visit! Suomenlinna sea fortress is a UNESCO world heritage site due to it being an unique example of military architecture of the time. The fortress was shaped by three historic eras when it helped to defend first Sweden, then Russia and ultimately Finland. Besides being a historical fortress, Suomenlinna is also a residential district of Helsinki with around 800 residents. The best and most sustainable way to explore the fortress is by following the marked "blue route". It takes you through all the key sites of the islands and you will find plenty of cafes and restaurants, as well as six museums along the way. We look forward to welcoming you back to Suomenlinna!

The amazing thing about Helsinki is that you can hope on a ferry and get to amazing places like this very quickly. This inexpensive 15-20 ride takes you from downtown to this cool island. An old fortress with a museum where you can explore, picnic, hike and feel a world away from the city. An absolutely perfect day.

Dear Seetheworld253, Thank you for your review! Glad you enjoyed your time in Suomenlinna Fortress Island. Like you mentioned, Suomenlinna is only a short distance away from the Market Square in Helsinki, and is easily reachable year-round by the HSL ferry and during summer months the FRS Finland water bus. We have many museums to visit, as well as cafes and restaurants - plenty to do and see for a day trip! Exploration of the historical UNESCO Fortress is easier by following the Blue Route, which ensures a safe and sustainable visit for all visitors. Great to hear you had a perfect day visit in Suomenlinna! Welcome back again!

This island has a great fortress and excellent views and of course needs a lot of walking. You would need to catch a ferry from market square to reach here. The ferry is for a short duration. There are enough restaurants within this place.

Dear ravindrav48, Happy to hear that you enjoyed your visit to Suomenlinna! Yes, walking really is the best way to discover the fortress island, as traffic on the island is limited to preserve the historical site. There are two boat connections to reach Suomenlinna - the HSL ferry all around the year and the FRS waterbus connection until late September. Both connections depart from the Market Square and take visitors to Suomenlinna. And like you mentioned, there are plenty of places to eat in on the island as well. All restaurants and cafes can be found on our website at suomenlinna.fi! Welcome back again!

This was a beautiful sight with plenty to see and do. We didn't visit any museums, but wandered the full perimeter of the two connected islands and saw beautiful swans and goslings, and so many nooks and crannies hidden in the old fortress. Great place for a picnic. Some cafes but all very expensive. The ferry over was super easy to find and a short journey with gorgeous views of other islands.

Dear 2412rachaelr, Thank you for your review! Glad to hear you enjoyed your visit to Suomenlinna. Indeed, Suomenlinna is a great place for a summer picnic! Just remember to respect the unique nature and surroundings of the Unesco World Heritage Site while visiting. Follow the Blue Route and marked paths to ensure a safe, sustainable visit to Suomenlinna. If the many cafes of Suomenlinna don't offer what is needed for a picnic, it is ok to bring your own snacks and beverages! There is also a K-market grocery store on the island. Just make sure your picnic spot is tidy after your visit and is not located on a private area or on a fragile historical monument. Great to hear you have enjoyed bird watching as well! Welcome back to Suomenlinna for a picnic!

A very nice experience !
Suomenlinna has quite a calm and unique atmosphere, and it is important to dress warmly when visiting.
Suomenlinna is a UNESCO world heritage site as a unique example of the military architecture of its time. The sea fortress has also been part of the defense of three different realms; Sweden, Russia and Finland. Nowadays Suomenlinna is a lively neighborhood of Helsinki with some 800 inhabitants. In addition to the military museum, it is worth visiting the Suomenlinna museum to learn about the history of the sea fortress
If you are in Helsinki don't miss it !The ferry ride is an essential part of the visit experience as you can enjoy the sea breeze and views of the city and archipelagos !

We bought a transport ticket (Zone AB will suffice), took the tram to the centre and jumped on the ferry (they go every 20 minutes) then went for a wander around this former naval fortress. It is a mere 1.5km walk to the furthest tip. There’s a church, museum, supermarket, homes and even a school (it’s inhabited). Plenty to explore for at least two hours (if not more).

Fantastic day trip a short ferry ride away from Helsinki where you can really soak up the historic military fortifications and get great views of to the Baltic and back to Helsinki itself. Lots of picnic places of the weather is fine and so much to see.
