Helsinki Zoo is one of the few zoos in the world located on an island. A 20 minute ferry (summer) or bus ride from the city centre will take you to a zoo where you can travel from cold mountain regions to dry steppes and from northern coniferous forests to the tropical rainforest. It is the perfect place to visit due to its natural environment, animals and history. Helsinki Zoo is home to 150 animal and 1000 plant species showcasing the diversity of nature. Meet the large Amur tigers, tiny pygmy marmosets, agile snow leopards, impressive wisents and dazzling, free roaming peafowls. Not to mention the indigenous Finnish species: elk, bear, wolverine, forest reindeer and more. The zoo was established already in 1889 and this makes it one of the oldest zoos in the world. Despite the long history and historic surroundings, Helsinki Zoo is a modern zoo with a mission to conserve biodiversity. Helsinki zoo breeds endangered species and participates in programs that aim to re-introduce animals to their natural habitats. Helsinki Zoo is renowned for its work in helping endangered big cats. Helsinki Zoo is the most significant annual donor for the conservation of the endangered Amur leopard and tiger.

I found the place more as a picnic spot rather than a zoo, sorry no offense meant. Having been to many zoos in India and abroad, i found the range of animals and their small enclaves bit boring. But the island as such is damn...More

This little island calms your mind after day in the city. Animals seem to be taken care of and they have big space to live on.

This zoo is an island dedicated all for animals. Many different species and nicely kept, beautiful scenery with the surrounding open water. A wonderful place to visit on any sunny day, the boat ride from Helsinki means extra adventure for the smallest ones.

While Korkeasaari is a bit outdated for many parts, it still is a decent zoo to visit. Its long history is evident in many of the buildings. Due to the limited space available it focuses on smaller animals and lacks some of the traditional highlights...More

The zoo is on an island. In summer you can go by boat, but in November we went by bus which leaves from outside Helsinki railway station and takes about twenty five minutes. There is an excellent range of animals, focusing (unsurprisingly) on cold weather...More
