Visited Ateneum in Nov.- a great overview of Modiglianis work was in place. Saturday morning at 11.00 the museum was full of people. To my surprise Ateneums great hall had superb acoustics- a choir presented Christmas music on the stairs, it really added a value to the exhibitions.

Ateneum is a very nice modern museum with a classical Finnish art in a centre of Helsinki. Special Modigliani exhibition is very interesting. Personal is friendly. You can access place with a baby carriage and on a wheelchair. Bistro is on the first floor and it has decent price and very good lunch. One of the best places in Helsinki... More

However much praise I heap on the Ateneum, I fear it won't be quite enough. A comprehensive art museum with works by the great Masters as well as a good selection of Finnish art. When I visited, there was an exhibit on Finnish art, including that related to the Kalevala. The top floor had a comprehensive temporary exhibit of Alice... More

This is the place to sample Finnish art -- which is what one should do as an art-loving tourist. To be honest, what mainly transpires is how Finnish artists in the 19th and 20th century have tried to learn from their better-known colleagues in France and Germany, and that the Finns have long been struggling with formulating a national identity.... A must see place in the center of Helsinki, not least because of the nice building itself. The real classics of the Finnish art history are located here + there is always an extra exhibition worth seiing. A really central location!

The first floor contains a few of the most striking paintings. One of the most poignant painting depicts the how hard it was to survive in Finland in the past. The heavy labour was shared with the entire family. The monumental landscape is a beautiful background. The sad eyes of the young girl witness how hard she has worked. Her... More

World class art finally in Helsinki. Ateneum has collected a large exhibition of Modigliani's works. Interesting and beautiful exhibition and interesting information about artist. So fine portraits, sculptures and drawings.

These lovely galleries housed many of the fine works that one can see only by visiting Finland. Especially loved the portraits. This place was perfect for contemplative visits with little to interfere with real art appreciation.

This is the best museum in Helsinki and probably the best in Finland. But that is not saying much :) You can see the whole collection in an hour.
