- pfefmeisterSan Francisco, California4,373 contributionsInteresting VenueDefinitely stop in after your cruise to the Fortress island. A wide variety of coffee, bakeries and deli offerings, you’ll find a lot of repeats as you walk down the two rows of offerings. Great old building, interesting vendors, nice place to sit, relax, and watch the people.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 October 2023
- babyatlas1Salt Lake City, Utah79 contributionsDefinitely give it a walk through. This was a great place to visit. Various market style stalls with fresh fish/meats, cafes, wine and restaurants. It only takes about 10 minutes to walk through unless you are tempted to try some treats and do some shopping. We stopped at that Scandinavian Cafe for coffee and a pastry which was really good. Stopped later in the day for gelato - also excellent.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 5 January 2024
- 367sandcastle42 contributionsGreat Helsinki market experienceReally interesting first experience in Helsinki and visiting the old market hall. I was grateful that it was indoors and warm. I had a great smothered reindeer meat baked potato and the lady who owned the stall brought me a little extra treat, she was so lovely and kind. From another stall I enjoyed salmon soup but I was disappointed that it was served with a slice of white bread despite the owners being Slavic. Another nearby shop selling a similar soup served dark bread, so I felt a made a bad choice... I'm just fussy about bread, there was nothing wrong with the salmon soup. There is a liquor shop in there where the prices are pretty reasonable considering the high alcohol taxes in Finland, and I bought two bottles of really delicious cloudberry liqueur. It's a touristy market so complaints about prices are kind of silly, of course it's going to be more expensive than a place frequented by locals. I found the overall atmosphere and set up to be very Finnish, woodsy and warm, a place to beat the cold and fill your stomach, maybe buy some jam or jerky and a bottle of something to warm up the soul as well. Lovely vendors, good location, beautiful design and structure.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 5 January 2024
- Jamie BHawley, Pennsylvania493 contributionsGreat place for lunch and dessert! We came here 3 times for lunch AND dessert, not to mention some shopping. There are places with delicious soups and there is enough variety at the different locations for everyone. It can get pretty busy and depending on the time it can be fast or slow service wise. It is small and you don’t need to allow much time for a visit. The bathrooms are tiny, but they exist at no extra charge.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 12 February 2024

Nicely decorated with wooden stalls, enjoyed wandering and snacking!Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 April 2024
- norman WBraintree, United Kingdom1,763 contributionsMouthwateringWell worth a visit even if you don’t want to buy anything. Wonderful architecture with wonderful wooden ‘cubicles’, inside, selling fish, chutneys etc etc. Seating areas with national delicacies to taste. An eye opener of the old world that our ancestors enjoyed. Of course, there was the inevitable reindeer skins and antlers for sale. A very interesting hour or soVisited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 16 June 2024
- B KGurugram (Gurgaon), India186 contributionsInteresting array or food and beverage at competitive pricingThis huge hall-like building structure has many stalls selling a variety of food and beverage items. The prices seemed competitive as compared to other shops and restaurants. They also have free washrooms.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 1 July 2024
- CMC1,049 contributionsOld Market Hall, Helsinki in JulyIf was here for a week I would be happy to come every day for food and try something different each day. Excellent quality products, open sandwiches from the few places we tried were good, ice cream stall was excellent (hazelnut, pistachio, and a cream wine type of flavour). Had the salmon soup in the first restaurant in the middle section if entering through south entrance, that was also excellent. One thing to avoid is buying bear meat that is smoked / cured. Preparing Bear like that takes away its real taste, and its a complete rip off - 2 thin sticks of bear salami was 16 euros, it tasted like it could have been pork, nice but pointless, tinned bear meat is better. Have a look there anyway as they will give you a sample of the smoked bear so might as well taste it for free (its very salty). Better to go to the stall where the lady is selling bear meat on an open sandwich, also expensive for what you get but at least you get the real taste.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 9 July 2024
- WellTraveled3Lexington, Massachusetts809 contributionsGreat food at The Market Hall on Helsinki HarborSome of the best food in Helsinki can be found at reasonable prices at the market halls in the city. This one is the largest and most oriented to tourists. Food was very good, with a wide variety of seafoods, sandwiches and soups. There are a range of prices, based on each stall or restaurant. One can also eat outside. Only open during the day and closes at 5PM.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 July 2024
- lithlith918 contributionsOld Market Hall HelsinkiThe Old Market Hall is worth a visit while in Helsinki. It's located in the heart of the city and is an easy walk from a few other attractions in the city. The market hall is a mix of souvenirs and food stalls. You can easily grab a bite to eat for a meal or snack, or a gift to take home to friend.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 July 2024

The Salmon Soup at the Soup Kitchen was so good I actually salivate when thinking about it. We loved this place. We walked past twice so we could view everything that was available, used the warm clean restrooms at the near end of the market, bought some wonderful dish towels at the far end of the market, and finally stopped at the Soup Kitchen. Our decision was based on the wonderful scent and comfortable vibe. The “bar” seating is quite comfortable, the bread and olive oil waiting for you is incredibly good. Even the water in the pitcher was worth mentioning. We had not been “lost in the desert”, the meal was really that enjoyable. The perfect temperature salmon soup with potatoes was elegantly spiced and richly supplied with delicious salmon chunks that had spent ample time in the broth so there were no clashing tastes. Humor me when I say the soup was an orchestral celebration of gastronomic artistry.
The market was very fun, the Soup Kitchen is a Finlandish treasure.

Representative of Finnish food and it's an easy bus/tram ride. We came here twice on our trip. First time we arrived around 5:30pm and it was too late for most of the places. In the center of the food hall there is a good coffee bar and place serving more modern cuisine.
What we wanted to go to was the soup stall. Unfortunately they close when they sell out. We settled fro the food place across the hall and had some meat pies and salmon soup.
The next day we came by around 3pm and the soup restaurant still had soup. The bowls looked steaming hot and full but we were too full to eat it.
Go for the experience of walking through the old food hall, but don't expect amazing food options.

Reindeer spring rolls, bear in a can, reindeer soup, cakes, coffee and caviar
Honestly there was so much choice and such amazing food on display... but be warned, this is a tourist hot spot and many of the delicacies will be cheaper elsewhere.
But somethings are too good not to miss.
Head to the caviar stall, where you can try some of the real high life for €5 for 2 little tastes of caviar... avoid the €2900 a kilo price tag.
Or reindeer spring rolls, the fusion food we didn’t know we needed!

It’s not a big market, some food stalls and some eateries, together with the original site of Robert’s Cafe, the original coffee chain of Finland. The specialty soup to try is salmon soup, which is worth a try if you can get a seat in any of the cafes at lunch time. Reindeer meet is also available. Worth a walk through.

Helsinki has a few of these market halls (kauppahalli) but this is my favourite (mostly because it's the closest to my flat!). Very quaint on the interior, with a very diverse combination of shops, including one of the best Helsinki butchers, the best fishmongers, and a range of delicatessens, cafes and restaurants. It does tend to get thronged with tourists which can be a little maddening when you are a local actually trying to do your grocery shopping here, but that's all part of the charm.

This was quite disappointing in the end.
From the outside, it is a pretty building and we were excited to enter.
However, on going in, we found quite a few stalls empty or closed. Of those that were open, the food on offer was an interesting mix but not many authentic Finnish stands and the prices were super high for “market” food and didn’t seem like good value.
Overall, can’t really recommend until the selection of stalls improves and the pricing represents fairer value for the size and quality of portions you get.

We loved this place; a long, long, low building on the southern harbour and close to the open market and market boats.
Thank goodness they have resisted the temptation to rip out the old wooden units inside in favour of a more modern interior, because it gives the place so much atmosphere.
I am sure that locals must regard this as something of a tourist trap but, going as a tourist, I completely fell for it's charm. Lots of places to eat, from coffee and cake to sandwich to full blown lunch and food sellers too.
A good photo opportunity and just a nice place for a wander.

Down by the quayside and at the end of the central esplanade this 100 plus year old market definitely worth a stop for lunch or mid morning/afternoon snackettes. Some superb traditional seafood stalls to buy delicious fresh salmon and seafood treats. No entrance fee ..also lots of other Nationally food produce both hot and cold as well as hot and alcoholic drinks. Really old fashioned wooden cubicle restrooms on site. Tried a number of the salmon canapé type snacks..all delicious. Number of stalls also sell famous Runebergin Torttu (Almond, Arrak, Jam, icing spongecake) named after famous Finnish poet..nice with a coffee. Good place for a stop on a Helsinki tour/visit.

Title of a review sums it up pretty well. Small market hall to walk through and look around but not much more. Yes I know it has many shops with traditional (and not so traditional) Finnish food, but unfortunately for most case those are tourist traps price-wise as this is the as much tourist location as it much can get for Helsinki - I've been fallen to this almost 20 years ago on the first visit, but never again so far. You either get better quality food/more authentic experience for same price, or get same quality level cheaper somewhere else.

I was taken aback by how clean and well organized the place was. The food selection was exceptional especially the salmon selection. By the way, did you know that you can get canned bear meat there? Not something I would indulge but there you have it.

What time is it good to go to get the most out of the market? Especially like lunch!!
Written 23 August 2019
So much will depend on your own itinerary, as there is so much you can do, close by, in and around the area. There are the markets outside, you can take a short cruise, you can walk along the harbour front, etc. You will find it is always busy, so an early lunch or a late lunch might work better, with your itinerary.

Hello, can I get smoked vacuumed fish at the market hall?
Written 19 December 2018
Generally open 8am to 6pm Monday to Saturday. Easter Monday is likely a holiday and it’ll be closed for that though.
Written 1 April 2018
I think it opened fairly early, we had breakfast there each morning. I say 9am at the latest, possibly earlier 😊
