Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Good place to visit and see for yourself how people lived in this remote place over 100 years back. This will be on your way back from Husavik, about an hour drive.

As part of a shore excursion from our ship, a very interesting stop. Some walking involved on uneven surfaces. If you choose to enter the manor house structures visibility can be poor with low ceiling heights, but certainly worth the effort. Gives a wonderful insight into how a fairly well-to-do family lived in the harsh climate.

This museum is a portal back into the old days of Icelandic living--the REALLY old days, as the earliest part of the grounds possibly dates to the 10th century. There are three parts to the museum: the ticket house/gift shop/cafe, the old farmhouse, and the church. The farmhouse itself is sprawling and contains areas aboveground and underground, with older sections and newer ones that were added on as the family grew. The church surprisingly appears to still be in use, and the cemetery next to it definitely is, as there were freshly-dug graves, so be extra respectful when walking through that area. Mind your head and your feet inside the church and especially the farmhouse, as stairs are almost steep and narrow enough to be considered ladders, and ceilings are frequently low with exposed supports. The ticket provides you entry to two other museums in Akureyri, although I didn't visit either of those. You can see everything in about an hour here.

We were greeted by a young man with a strong Irish accent. Grandparents from Cork! Feel free to roam inside but watch your head and feet. Uneven. Into the dark we go. Reminders of trenches. Earth floor and wooden props supporting the ground floor walls. Edge further back into the house and see how they lived. Artefacts everywhere. Upstairs. Bedroom. Writing desk. Clothes. Downstairs, a laundry mangle, sewing machine, embroidery and tapestry on the walls. Peer out of the tiny windows into grassy banks. Snug for winter. Blinking out into daylight and amazing fjord views. A wide sweep of pewter sea. Visit the tiny church next door. So colourful. As we headed for the bus, tiny dots of fighter jets screamed overhead. Must be Americans, said my companion. Back to the 21st century.

Nice place to stop for a visit the lady in the ticket office was very friendly and welcoming. You can walk through and look into the houses and they have detailed descriptions of each room on the wall. The young man in period costume was also very nice.

We were surprised how good this was. Had a coffee first in the gift shop. The sun was out so the cottages and church looked great. Very interesting how they lived.

We stayed at the Old Farm-Islandsbaerinn for one night while driving the Ring Road. It is only about 10 minutes south of Akureyi in a residential neighborhood & easy to find. The owner saw us pull up & let us in. Wow, the place was immaculate with nice touches throughout. We were in a group of four, but a large family could stay here. The outside hot tub was a great way to end our day of travel. The new washer/dryer is a nice option, but very confusing to figure out. However, I would HIGHLY recommend for any group passing through on a Ring Road drive.
