Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

One of the focal points of Akureyri is its massive Lutheran Church Akureyrarkirkja. Built in 1940 by the same architect who built Hallgrimskirkja in Reykjavik. Sits high on a hill overlooking the city and harbor for great views of the area. Exterior is quite impressive. Unfortunately, it was closed so I didn't get to see inside.

This church sits a little above the main street of the town and is a focal point for the area. The design and materials are unique and a major construction project is making changes to the steps leading up to the church and making it a bit more accessible.
During World War II some stained glass windows were moved for protection from bombing. A window from Coventry Cathedral in England was moved to this church for safe keeping. It is still being kept safe here.

Timing is everything. We were fortunate to be helped by a local and his daughter who took us in his car to the church as there are far too many steps for anybody with mobility problems. Unfortunately when we got to the church there was a funeral and not open to the public till the afternoon.

We tried to visit this church on a Tuesday evening, but it was closed. Went back on Wednesday, only to discover they were having a furneral and we could not visit.

Stunning outline up on the hill. Note: famous steps have been dug up for renovation and are not currently visible.

Really lovely church, long stair case up to it. The external architecture is very interesting, inside the church is quite simplistic and minimalistic. Great view over the city and the fjord. This church is the best landmark of this town. Worth the visit.

Stunning modern work of art. Such a iconic church in the city that can be seen from anywhere. As of August 2023, they are constructing the steps. We were able to still see the church by accessing it from the side and walk around the property. The doors are beautiful and stunning architecture.

Good string concert with optional donation requested; watch for concert listings on board outside the church

It is ust a normal church, nothing special. I guess the Steps were the most spectacular thing there.

Akureyri is located at the end of a huge fjord in northern Iceland. The sail in and out were as beautiful as anywhere. Shockingly wide, the fjord was maybe 30 to 40 miles long with farms on both sides of the ship. Our August cruise showed surprising shades of green accented with downhill streams and waterfalls. The town of Akureyri is quaint....small with some 18,000 people. The focal point is the church on the hillside with beautiful stained glass imported from Germany. Just above the church is a botantical garden, well worth an hour's stroll. The town, like the rest of Iceland, is very clean and totally free of trash, showing the pride of the residents.
