We had timed our visit to Isafjordur to align with this tour and glad we did. We booked online a few days before arrival. Then on the day of the tour we went to the West Tours office (in the same building as Tourist Information) and picked up our tickets and instructions for catching the boat. The boat is the same for day trippers and hikers (and a park ranger on our journey). The trip takes about an hour and on arriving at Hesteyri we were ferried across to land in a dinghy. This is a very short trip though and if you have enough mobility to climb a short ladder you should be OK. We then split into 3 groups - the hikers went off, the Icelandic speaking day trippers with another guide and 4 of us for the English language tour with Lisa. The tour takes you on about an hours walk around the village visiting the river/waterfall, various buildings in the village and the old graveyard, with Lisa telling us information and stories about the village. We finished at the Doctors House where refreshments (savoury and sweet plus coffee) were served (included in the tour). Plus some traditional music and songs. The remaining time (about an hour) was free to walk around yourself and then the dinghy returned to the beach to ferry us back to the boat for the return trip. A fascinating look at how people lived in this remote corner of Iceland and the easiest way to visit Hornstrandir without requiring full hiking gear!

When I arrived in Isafjordur, no shop turned out to sell the gas cannister I needed for my 5-day hike in Hornstrandir. The ladies of West Tours have made several phone calls and even drove me around voluntarily looking for a solution, which we also found. In addition, they have given me extensive advice on my return to Reykjavík and my overnight stay in Isafjordur. I am very impressed with this organization, really great!

We were very excited about this tour and planned our whole Icelandic vacation around this day trip. It is pricey but seemed worth it based on the reviews and pictures. Unfortunately, it was rainy and the sea was rough on the day of our tour. What should have been a 2 hour boat ride turned into a 4 hour boat ride- just to get there. Every single person on board got sea sick including the staff. Im not even sure if it was safe for us to be on such rough seas in a little boat. When we finally got there the hike had to be modified since we were behind schedule and since the weather was so bad. So we didn't even see the cliff that we paid all this money to come see. We only did a 2 hour hike and then in order to get back to the boat meeting spot we had to walk across a freezing cold river in our underware. Then we had a 3 hour rough boat ride back. While it was an adventure I will never forget, I wish the tour would have been canceled due to weather. I spent a lot of money for 7 hours of being sea sick and only a 2 hour hike of things I could have seen in Ísafjörður.

On the second day of my hike on Hornvik there was a weather warning. Storm rain low temperature. The ranger in Hornvik told me that boats for next day are cancelled and that it would be saver to leave Hornvik and take the boat from Veidileysufjördúr. 7 people dicided to do so, hiking back in a group across the mountainpass at 512m. Three of them had a completely destroyed tent. I was the only person who actually booked this particular boat. All others were charged extra with a huge amount of money by Karlotta of West Tours, as soon as the boat arrived in the harbour of Isafjördur. Just because they didn’t book this specific boat for the way back. What a shame, because the boat had to come and pick me up and come to Veidileysufjördur anyway. People, be warned against this company, (and Karlotta with an intimidating way of communication)and be aware of the financial risks you are taking, booking a boattrip to the beautiful peninsula Hornstrandir. Summarizing complains about West Tours: poor service, taking advantage of their monopoly. Bad intern organized, priority is money making, not cooperating with rangers, lack of giving informations before you take off. None of the 6 others of my group got any weather warnings from West Tours before they left Isafjördur.

We were in Isafjordur for the day via cruise ship (Holland America). The on board excursion price to go whaling was 249.00. We walked to the West Tours office and were able to purchase the tour for 95.00. The on board passengers went out in the morning on a packed ship. We went in the afternoon on the same boat with less than 20 passengers. We saw plenty of whales, some quite close. The boat was very roomy and comfortable. There was a very nice lady and here adorable granddaughter who served refreshments and made sure everyone was comfortable. I can whole heartedly recommend this company!
