We took a tour of the local area in one of their vans. The driver was very safe and professional and provided a good description of all areas. We covered all the sites in one afternoon and were very comfortable.
We went there and booked a trip to Hesteyri. We were going there with my children for hiking during 5 days. We went to the office, Not good morning or hello. The owner yelling the other employees. they were all having coffee while we were...More
Our trip on July 29 (booked and paid July 10th) was cancelled due to an approaching storm.
I can understand that such problem may arise, nothing to say.
What I do not understand is the reluctance of West Tours to refund the tour, despite the...More
Hornstradir itself was great but West Tours was awful.
Our tour to Hornstradir was prebooked whle we were in the US, and was on June 13th. First of all we went to the meeting place on the voucher, and that was incorrect--no one was there....More
We took this boat ride from Isafjordur to Hesteyri. The water was choppy (mid July) and the tour of Hesteyri (population of 5) was nothing I would need to see again. There is nothing left of this bustling community of 30 (back in the day)....More
We spent half a day on the island of Vigur which is a real paradise for those who love birds.
It is a real joy to be able to approach them to observe them without disturbing them, especially the famous Atlantic puffin.

We were in the Eagle Tours bus sold by the West Tours folks. Very interesting and scenic tour on a beautiful day covering some of the more lovely spots in the area. Good tour guide who probably could have told us more, but a talkative...More

We went on a small boat to an Islan where there were Puffins, Common Eiders, and other kinds of birds. Half way thru the bird watching tour you get coffee, tea an dbread and cakes - excellent! Then you had time on your own or...More

It is possible but you will have to plan, especially for the 4 year old. Keep in mind that there is NOTHING there. If you go on your own you will need all food, water, supplies, etc. plus arrange for a boat over and a pick up.
We did a day trip which involved a boat ride, hanging out at Borea's adventure center, looking for Arctic foxes, and a couple of meals. We were supposed to do the hiking part of this but were put on/given the wrong trip by West Tours. As a result we hung out and did some easy hiking in the area, which would certainly work for the 4 year old.
My suggestion is that you directly contact the local outfitter that West Tours uses, named Borea Adventures in Isafjordur, since they are the boots-on-the-ground people, and see what they might have available that would be appropriate for all of your collective needs. West Tours was terrible; despite numerous emails from and a confirmation to our travel agent (who is Icelandic), they seemed to have no "record" of us booking (and paying for) the tour. In fact, I was impressed that no one in that office had much of a clue about anything at all. When they finally contacted "someone", they sent us over to Borea Adventures, down the street. As I alluded to above, West Tours did not put us on the appropriate tour, as we had requested a full day of hiking, and there was no organized hiking on our trip; but everyone else who got off the boat on the stop before us went hiking!
There is no reason not to contact/book with Borea Tours directly. It is not any cheaper but you will get correct information about their tours at least, and they seemed like a very professional and together organization.
Hornstradir was beautiful (we had a rare day of good weather) so I hope you manage it.
