Nice views...wait for Low Tide
Aug 2021
This old lighthouse at the west end of Reykjavik is nice and picturesque. However, realize it is only accessible at low tide. Certain times of the spring you cannot access it due to the nesting of certain birds.

Beautiful views from Grotta Lighthouse!
Aug 2021
The entire location is beautiful! You can get to the lighthouse over the isthmus during low tides. You can also walk along the surrounding paths and enjoy the black sand beaches.
Before you go to the lighthouse, check the internet to see if the location is closed.

Beware the Arctic terns!
Jul 2021
Before you make the hike out to Grotta from central Reykjavik, be aware that there is a causeway to the lighthouse from the mainland so check the tide tables (displayed nearby) before you set off so you don't end up stranded! The other thing to watch out for is the Arctic tern: the lighthouse is surrounded by their nesting area. They may look small and harmless, but they are very territorial and will defend their turf by dive bombing anyone who trespasses inn to it! You might get a nasty peck on the head!

A drive, but cool!
Jun 2020
If you have a car rental, Grotta is a great little trip out of the main downtown area. It's probably too far to walk, however. I have heard that in the winter time, you can see the northern lights!!

The best spot to see the Northen Lights when in Reykjavik
Jan 2021
The closest and most ideal place to see the Northern Lights, when there is a grade 4 and above.. we were very luck, its dark enough and not too far away to drive out and see the lights if you are staying in in Reykjavik.

Highly recommended

Cool (and cold/windy) walk
Mar 2020
Before dinner, our family of 5 (3 teenagers) decided to take a walk out to Grotta Lighthouse. We parked in the small lot where the road ends and headed down the path out towards the peninsula. The highlight wasn't the lighthouse itself, but the walk to and from in gale force winds surrounded by an angry ocean. We bundled up and laughed as we were blown around, trying to hold our balance or lean into the wind as it held us up. Totally worth the stop, and one of our favorite experiences in the city.

Quaint lighthouse near Reykjavik
Jun 2019
Lovely stroll along the coastline and really nice place to watch the ocean and have a walk. One of the most beautiful places near Reykjavik. The view of the mountains along the sea is absolutely stunning. Plenty of seabirds . Just take care about the high tide.
Awesome place for observing the northern lights, near Reykjavik. In winter it is very cold here, the cold wind is blowing. Nice place to spend some time and just enjoy in sea, air ans energy. Every season. You should come here at least once to see it.

Nice lighthouse
Mar 2020
To actually walk to the lighthouse you would need to scale large rocks that are in the water when tide is out, so we weren't able to get that close. It is a pretty lighthouse, and we knew people who drove out there to see the Northern Lights one night. Worth the drive over.

Worth the walk but cold!
Mar 2020 • Couples
We were staying in central city, we got the 13 bus to the last stop on the route and walked about half an hour to the lighthouse.
You have to make sure you are walking there at low tide!
If you are going there of an evening in hope to see the northern lights there then wrap up double warm! The temperature was -1 when we went but because of the wind it reached -9.
It’s a shame that the two buildings there are not in use, even as a cafe or an open shelter to see the lights from etc, apart from a lighthouse (which is locked) there isn’t much to see!
