As someone who doesn't usually enjoy museums and went almost against my will on a rainy winter's day, the museum was very interesting. I don't think people usually associate Iceland with having a rich history nor a vibrant culture formed through an incredibly unique landscape...More

This is a very good museum on the history of Iceland from ancient times to present. The displays were good but in some cases the lighting was too low ( probably to protect the items) making it difficult to see and take pictures. There was...More

The section about the early settlement of Iceland is interesting and well done. It was good to pull together all the information we had learned form our GeoIceland tours.

With an audio guide it was an excellent hour and a half to understand how Iceland was discovered and settled and the transition to possession of the King of Norway and later the King of Denmark before becoming a free Republic during the occupation of...More

This museum, 15 minutes from downtown, is important because it shows you the many aspects of the history of Iceland from the archaeology to the culture to the religion to many other facets of life from 800 AD to the late 1800s.

Excellent museum a five minute walk from our hotel. We spent two hours there before walking downtown for dinner. Unique exhibits and can catch tourists up quickly on Icelandic history. Found some books in the store that are not available in the USA.

But learned waaaaay more at the Settlement Museum and had more fun at the latter regarding the settlement period. Loved the medieval church stuff on 2nd floor as well as the Viking Woman exhibit on well preserved remains. Third floor was less interesting to me...More

Hi, clearly this depends on a variety of factors (interest, knowledge, with kids..?), but as a general suggestion; try 2 hrs and add a coffee break. Enjoy!
