    Wonderful experience of ice cave
Amazing experience and worth to visit this beautiful ice cave, It’s so cool to walk through it. Amazing ice pattern could be seen which is so neat & clean even volcanic ashes inside it. It’s once in life time experience. Make sure to visit beautiful natural ice cave if you are in Iceland.

That's not an Ice Cave. That's a short tunnel!
The jeep ride was fun, the landscape is nice, the guide was good, putting on Grampians and walking on the ice was fun too, BUT where is the Ice Cave? This is a small tunnel at best. Pretty yes, but an ice cave? No.

Very cool, great guides, well worth it
As a geologist this was stunning, but anybody would enjoy it. Very cool, knowledgeable guides, very safety oriented. I saw an older person review complain somewhere that it was arduous - I would call it intermediate as you have to walk about 1/2 mile with crampons on a gentle trail. It took us way longer than planned to get from the Rte. 1 to the caves ~2 hrs rather than the stated 1 hr. This was due to the time of year and snow and slush on the big sand plain that they have to drive across. So our trip was more like 5 hrs rather than 3 hrs. But the guide kept us entertained. Just be aware if you are there in the winter. Please make sure to tip the guides! I worry that cheap tourists don't do that. This is the only time we tipped in Iceland and they deserved it.

Amazing day trip to see waterfalls and ice caves
My husband and I took this tour to see the ice cave with artic adventures. It was a truly once and a lifetime experience! Our tour guide Kacper was soooo amazing! He was personable, funny, and informative. I cannot thank him enough for making this experience for us! Our guides in the actual ice cave Tomas and Steinthor were also so great! They got us to the cave and showed us some of the most amazing sites at the glacier. If you don’t know what to do when you land in Iceland this is 100% the tour for you. We had such a beautiful drive out to the caves and got to stop and see several waterfalls.

This Katla Ice Cave Tour was included in a two day Jokulsarlon Tour. Originally it was supposed to be a glacier walk, which we would have been OK with. This is rated as an easy tour. It wasn’t for us.

We didn’t mind the ride getting there, which was extremely rough and bumpy in a super jeep. Can’t imagine what it would be like in a regular vehicle. They said we would be dropped off close to the cave. Well, it was a 15 minute walk, which wasn’t the problem. But, you had to cross a couple of rickety 2 x 4 planks (very narrow) over some small streams to get there. Doesn’t sound bad except even holding on to a handrail, there was a stiff wind and the whole thing shakes.

We are senior citizens, but very active. We were told there are several of these plank crossings inside the cave, so the ones outside were the “easy” ones. The ones in the cave only have rope handrails, which are usually wet, and some you need to reach out to grab the rope. We are grateful our tour guide was straight with us and told us exactly what to expect. We decided this wasn’t a safe activity for us, and we didn’t want to hold up the group, so we waited in the vehicle.

When the group came back a couple of the younger ones told us we made the right choice hanging back. They said it was really dicey, and even with crampons they were slipping around. And don’t forget, once you make your way in, then you retrace your route back! We found out later they are constantly remaking the routes inside the cave since the ice keeps melting. So this is a very makeshift, and constantly changing route.

What bothers us, is this tour is rated as “easy.” It should be rated moderate, or at least give an accurate description of what to expect, so you can make a realistic decision if this tour is a good fit for you. I honestly cannot imagine anyone slipping and getting hurt in this cave, way out in the middle of nowhere. You would probably have to be helicoptered out.

What may have originally been a small ice crevice that was carved in 2019? has since melted away to become a huge ice hole. At its current melt rate, it will collapse in two years, possibly even next year. The glacier is also receding about 30 meters a year. (Yes, humanity, you've broken the planet's climate. I hope you're happy.)

The tour minivan takes you from Troll Expeditions' extremely busy lava center restaurant along the former ring road to an even worse gravel road. From there, it's a short walk across lava sands to the equipment box where everyone gets a set of Yak Track-equivalents for their shoes. The safety briefing is straightforward: hold onto the safety rope, be careful of your footing, don't stop randomly for photos.

The hike itself is fairly short, maybe an hour of the experience, much of that broken up for photo opportunities. If you can climb three flights of stairs (taking breaks between each) and walk a straight line for at least 5m, you'll have no problem undertaking this trip. It is slow-paced because you have 11 tour members, and the guide checks and, as necessary, reinstalls pitons and the adjusts the stability of the wooden bridges used to cross crevasses. Frequently, other groups come the opposite direction. It's a busy place.

Dress warm and expect to get wet. On our visit, the wind was blowing at a pretty strong clip. Raindrops hitting my face felt like little needles.

Overall, it was ok, but not something I would only recommend with reservations.

Do not go there!!! The pictures from the Katla ice cave from arctic adventures website were taken almost about 3 years ago. The cave melts and changes. It looks like a hole in the glacier or a small tunnel now! If you do not trust me, just check my photos below or the last photos from this cave, for example, on instagram!

It was a great tour, well worth the trip from Reykjavik. Even though it was raining the whole time, I still had a marvelous visit to this unusual place. Troll works hard to maintain access and safety to this unique place.

Underwhelming and not worth the cost. If you have ever been on a glacier or near one this tour is nothing special and for the price I would not recommend.

This was one of the things we were really looking forward to and it was totally worth it!

The drive to Katla Ice Cave was probably the worst. Super bumpy and dusty ride in a not-so-cool “Super Jeep.” It was fairly rough terrain and hot (the AC wasn’t working properly and opening the windows meant massive dust storm inside the vehicle).

We did make a quick photo stop before the actual ice cave. Once we got to the ice cave there was a little bit of climbing and crossing several wood platforms (probably under 2 feet wide and maybe 6-10 feet up?). If you’re afraid of heights like me, it could make you a tad nervous initially, but really not in danger at any point if you’re careful and follow the guide. You also will have crampons over your shoes and helmets.

The arch/cave showcased in the ads were beautiful but I personally think the sight of the mountains made of ALL ice was even more incredible.

In July, there’s a lot dripping water overhead from melting ice so definitely should wear waterproof/water resistant clothing and boots. Maybe gloves, but we didn’t really need ours.

Our guide looked a bit rough but was great. Only part I’m not sure of was chipping ice to eat. Unique experience but felt guilty doing so.
