Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This beautiful hotel is old style so don’t expect all chrome & minimalist rooms. The creaky floorboards & sloping corridors add to it’s beautiful charm. Lesuire facilities are fab & during our 2 x day break we had pool to ourselves both times! There’s not a lot around - but if your looking for a relaxing break with lovely walks then this is ideal. Food was fabulous & I have to mention the restaurant waiting staff who worked so hard - special mention to Archie who was working his socks off but still had time to chat to us & thanks to Peter too, who was so friendly & personable.

Arrived on the Friday afternoon only to find on booking in that there was a large wedding party taking place on the Saturday and that there was plenty of guests staying in the hotel, which answered our questions about booking a table for dinner only to be told that 7 pm was the earliest time and that on the Saturday it would be at least 8.30 pm. We decided to stay and went to our room on the 3rd floor. Access to the corridor by the fire door was very noisy because of the excessive squeaking and our internal doors were the same. We did not have a happy relaxing night because of the coming and going o the other guests and our TV stopped working because it had lost the signal (Reception were not interested, atmospheric pressure my foot). After breakfast the following morning we spoke to the receptionist who told us that there was no other rooms available, we then decided to cut short our stay, went back to our room packed up and then sorted out another hotel to stay in for the last 2 night.

What an absolute treasure, from the attentive and friendly staff to the great room and the food is absolutely superb (they even have a separate menu with delicious options for a plant based diet, which I thoroughly appreciated).
After our meal we relaxed in the lounge bar from where you can look out onto the gardens (or sit out if you wish) or in the upper bar part sit and relax in the very comfortable lounge furniture.
Add on top of that the leisure facilities and the picturesque walks you could not ask for a better place to recharge your batteries.
We will be back for sure.

Our experience in the hotel was awful, despite its friendly staff and great location. My Wife booked online and at no stage was advised that to access our bedroom we would need to climb four flights of stairs between Reception and the room, with no offer of help with our luggage. Bad enough for a healthy person but not so funny when we both suffer from heart conditions. The bedroom was very small and the bathroom was very poor with a cracked sink, peeling side panel to bath, dirty grouting around bath / shower and extractor fan not functioning. As the hotel is on a steep slope and the bedroom was at the rear of the hotel the bedroom window faced on to a road and so privacy was dependent on stick on opaque sheeting which had been applied to the window panes. It was not possible to have the window open for fresh air without both lack of privacy and the possibility of an intruder climbing in. Breakfast was alarming due to the lack of social distancing around the self service buffet (whole breakfast was self service) and that the staff made no attempt to pull up those guests not wearing masks (despite this being legally required in Scotland). Needless to say we will not be coming back to this hotel.

Great time again. The staff were very friendly and helpful. the room was clean ,tidy and warm too hot have to leave the window open .But could hear the birds in the morning and the sheep in the distance. Good walks near by to take our dog for a walk. The restaurant and the bar menu .has a good range of choice. try the steak on a slate only things this time no syrup to make the cocktails ! We had a wonderful time thank see you all next time

Fantastic stay. Looking forward to returning already.
From our first call to book our stay the staff could not have been any nicer or more helpful.
John and Caitlyn at reception were incredibly professional but also very pleasant and a delight to deal with.
We were in the Tweeddale Suite which exceeded our expectations.
Fantastic room and the sunken bath built into the turret was amazing.
We ate there on two consecutive evenings plus had breakfast 2 mornings.
Again the service was excellent and the food was excellent in both quality and value.
I cannot recommend this Hotel highly enough.
Thanks to all the staff for making our stay so wonderful. Clare.

If you want a deluxe room with a faulty shower, brown mould on the shower tray and a wasps nest in the rotten wooden window frame, then this is the place to book in to!
My wife and I booked in for 3 days to celebrate our wedding anniversary 16/7/21 to 19/7/21.
On the first morning of our stay we could not get any hot water from the shower and the temperature control seemed to be broken. Reported this to reception and were told it would be fixed by our return. Got back later that day to find it was still faulty in fact the handle of the control fell off in the hand of the member of staff who came to look at it after our second complaint. Requested a room with a shower that worked properly but this was refused as the hotel was hosting a wedding NO WAY this is a 4star hotel AA please note!

I visited this hotel some years ago and sadly it had fallen into shabby decline.
Wise and generous investment have restored former glory. It’s a short scenic trip from Edinburgh .An imposing driveway leads to the impressive frontage.
We were received warmly at reception. Strict Covid precautions were enforced but with courtesy and good humour.
Afternoon tea was served..........everything of high quality with special favourites the scones ,sausage rolls and sandwiches Regretfully we were unable to manage more than a couple of excellent cakes but the rest were boxed to takeaway.
Service was relaxed but efficient and despite the face masks the staff were clearly smiling.
Do take the opportunity of exploring the grounds........deep gorge ,disused water mill and the Polish map of Scotland.

What a superb hotel! We really enjoyed our recent visit, the staff couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. It would be worth the money just to wander round the grounds! Great place to stay - we'll be back.

We stayed for 1 night in a standard double room just for a break away from home.
We enjoyed our stay but don’t think that the hotel deserves a 4 star rating.
Rooms are tired with wonky windows and frayed blind.
Very limited refreshments in room.
Bar service was hit & miss some staff saying that you had to order at the bar to charge drinks to your room Others saying not allowed to go to the bar and then arguing about it in front of guests!
Dinner in the restaurant was OK but service was slow. Excuse was that there was a back up of orders in the kitchen ? The signature dish of steak on a hot stone was popular but I found the idea of cooking raw meat at the table unappealing and found the smell from other tables unpleasant.
Breakfast service was again slow with a long wait for juice & coffee.
Hot items were good but toast again arrived late.
Overall a bit disappointed with our visit.
Barony offers lots of discounts to entice guests and I would only return on a ‘deal’
