About
Tal-Massar Winery is a cherished family-owned boutique winery nestled in the historic village of Għarb, Gozo. Our story began in 1934, when gozitan immigrant Carmelo Hili returned from America and first founded the winery. Nowadays, third-generation vintner Anthony Hili and his wife Marisa, continue preserving the winery's legacy into the 21st century. Our vines are planted in terraced lime calcareous soil which limits their productivity, but ensures the best quality grapes. In fact, we only produce twenty thousand bottles of wine from a single harvest. Every year, we produce a range of IĠT and DOK Gozo wine from grape varieties such as the indigenous Maltese Girgentina, Vermentino, Nero d'Avola, Syrah, and Merlot.

We enjoyed an excellent and enjoyable wine tasting evening with Anthony, the owner of the vineyard as the host. After a brief introduction to the history of the vineyard and the wines that it produces, we tasted three wines and one fortified dessert wine with accompanying food. There were generous servings and all over a two hour period, with no rush to leave. We actually had to enquire about purchasing some wine, unlike a lot of other vineyards where the evening finishes with a “hard sell". Definitely to be recommended.

Anthony explained the techniques he employs in the winery and the history of wine in Malta and guided us through the tasting of 5 wines.

The food platters that accompany the tasting are quite generous, we went there after a filling lunch, and I was sad not to be able to finish the plate. The tomato paste is the best I tried in Gozo.

Me and my boyfriend and I were impressed by the wines and will be ordering a few bottles.

The area where the tastings are held is exposed to light winds which was very nice on a hot July day.

A very enjoyable evening thanks to a knowledgeable owner, with passion for the business. Superb range of wines, coupled with complementary foods, to highlight the tastes and flavours of the different products. I can wholeheartedly recommend this experience for anyone visiting Gozo.

If you want to see some vines in rhe beautiful sun, and hear about how they are cared for in order to create truly delicious wine then this is a must do if you visit Gozo.
We were lucky enough to stay a 10 min walk away from here and would go back again and again.
Anthony and his family were extremely warm and friendly hosts who led us through an enjoyable 3 hours of tasting their wine and feasting on a delicious charcuterie board.
Well worth every cent.

Very friendly and informative evening. The wine is fabulous and platteris amazing and quite filling. We are locals and this is your second visiting. We brought family this time and we all loved it! It’s in a place called Ghasri. The venue is located in a lovely quiet where the vineyards are in Gozo. (I’d love to move here!) We never got a headache the day after. It’s very Mediterranean evening!!!!

This was an informative and highly enjoyable evening. A great selection of wines as well and a great platter of food, which were selected for pairing with each wine. Be warned this is not a simple tasting you get a full carafe of wine between a couple for each tasting, so well worth every penny and we bought 2 bottles to take home with us (excuse cling film over food platters in the photos as this was just to keep flies away)
