St. John the Baptist Church (Xewkija Rotunda) in Gozo is disputed as the third largest dome in Europe by the Mosta Dome on Malta. Having visited both I certainly can't decide. The church took over 20 years to build and was started in 1951 and was built with local limestone. It is a beautiful church and going up into the bell tower and around the Rotunda was great with fabulous views. The interior of the church is lovely. Highly recommend a visit.

As the lady said "it is €3 euro for the lift up but free on the way down". The lift is worth it, the inside is beautiful but the trip to the top gives a great extra bonus. From the top you can climb the spiral staircase up the bell tower for that extra height. However, it is old, steep, open and, when it rings, the sound of the bell goes through you. Set in a sweet public square which has public toilets with lift access.

Nothing special really. Interesting to see the dome - third largest unsupported one in the world. The section of the old church is more interesting and if you prepare to pay €3 per head to go up the lift you can have some views of the Citaddella and surrounding areas.

Church of St. John The Baptist was on our city tour, we stopped in for a look around. It is located in the oldest village in Gozo.
The dome was completed in 1970, it is the 3rd largest dome in the world, the church is is described as a church within a church. The stone sculpture from the old church (1665) was placed inside the new church in its original location.

We saw this church from afar (75 meter high dome!) and were curious about the inside. Unlike the other churches in Malta and Gozo, this one was not lavishly decorated inside, but its volume is truly immense! You can take the elevator for 3 euros and walk around the dome. From there you can see almost the entire island of Gozo. Our surprise only increased when we learned that the construction of this church only started in the 1950s (one of the two towers is still unfinished). At the back of the church, where you can take the elevator (small passage), large parts of the old church have been incorporated into a kind of side chapel. Also very excessive. Few tourists when we visited the church, so it was nice and quiet.

Very very imposing church which can be seen from very, very far away. Famous for its huge dome. She's not very old but it doesn't show. The interior is simple (but superb marble floor). You have to see the old chapel and especially go up with the elevator to the dome (but part of it is closed because it is under construction = but it's worth it)

It is a pleasant 30 min walk from the centre of Victoria with pavements all the way. A hugely impressive church in a tiny village, the ladies who volunteer there are lovely and very informative. Definitely get the lift to the dome, the 360 view of all Gozo is absolutely worth it.

The church ( Rotunda of St. John the Baptist) has the third largest free standing dome in the world.Fantastic church with great views from the top of the dome. It is a architectural masterpiece and testimony to the skills of the local stone workers.Great value 3 euro to the top.

The dome is illustrious. The steps of this church is full of garbage. Bell tower and elevator is a no no. As it is too confined.

This huge church towers over the surrounding countryside. The resemblance to Venice's Santa Maria Della Salute is not accidental. The Venetian church was the model for the Xewkija Rotunda, which was constructed in the 1950s-1970s. It is possible to take an elevator and visit the balcony that surrounds the dome. The panoramic views are magnificent. In fact, one can see the hazy shores of the Island of Malta, across the Gozo channel.
