About
The 13th century palazzo, set in the heart of the medieval city of Mdina, was the home of Captain Olof Frederick Gollcher OBE (1889-1962). Olof was an artist, soldier, collector and philanthropist. The Gollchers were Swedish ship owners and traders, who came to Malta in 1848. Olof Gollcher bought the palazzo with his mother in 1927 and he made the house his home until he died in 1962. The Olof Gollcher Collection comprises artefacts originating from European and Mediterranean countries, between the 15th and 20th centuries, including furniture, arms, armour, jewellery, coins, paintings, fans, rugs, documents, manuscripts, silver and glass. Opening times: Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM (last entry). Facilities include: Audio guided tours in the following languages: Maltese, English, Italian, French, German and Spanish, panoramic view rooftop cafe and special needs toilet.

Skip it if you’re pressed for time
It’s more about collections than anything else. Personally I don’t find old guns, silver, China, pottery and carpets very interesting. Still it’s worthwhile a visit if you have the time - skip it if you’re pressed for time b

Interesting restored 13th century house, well worth a visit
A lovely house with an interesting history and furnishings. Very good audioguide, interspersing the room commentary with quotes from its owner and restorer, Olaf Gollcher. Some exquisite items including a Napoleonic era watch with an unusual dial; I shall say no more, go see for yourself!

An insight into how the wealthy lived!
A very pretty private house/museum in Mdina. Pretty old as it dates back to the 13th century. There are kitchens to visit, a lovely courtyard, and all the rooms you would expect of the landed gentry! Lots of different things on display - silver, jewellery, furniture, rugs, paintings and thousands of books. You can wander at your leisure.

A fascinating place to visit, very enjoyable
A really lovely experience. The house is charming and historically fascinating. The audio guide was great. The rooms are really interesting and it is like stepping back in time. It’s very different from the normal museum experience, much richer and real. The staff were very helpful.

Interesting house. An audio guide included in the price added to the experience. Interesting displays and art in rooms around a courtyard. Super rooftop cafe was a welcome find. A “bee friendly” garden on the roof too!

The house is so reconstructed as to no longer be medieval. The art collection is mostly regrettable baroque paintings. At the time the owner was collecting, baroque paintings were very inexpensive, so his collection has to be understood as reflecting a bad eye for art. His own paintings are shopping mall quality. Even his collection of rugs is not worth looking at.

Palazzo Falson Historic House Museum is one of the oldest buildings in Mdina and dates back to the 13th century and the upper floor was added during the 15th century. Over the centuries, the various occupants of the palazzo made further architectural modifications including the last owner, Captain Olof Frederick Gollcher OBE (1889-1962) who generously bequeathed his house and collection to the public. The reputable cultural organisation Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti (FPM) has taken the arduous process of restoring the palazzo while discovering several architectural features and highlighting the various interventions effected throughout the centuries. Several academics and experts have contributed by studying the building’s history and the rich collection within it, some of which are of exceptional importance. To quote one such expert, Ms Jennifer Wearden, an authority on oriental carpets, described our carpet collection as a 'collection of remarkable pieces' . Palazzo Falson offers the visitors an experience of a historic house museum and its collection that reflect the interest of Olof Gollcher.

The tickets are a bit expensive (€10 for an adult in Feb 2023), however the experience was nice. We found all the information quite interesting. One of the best house to museum conversions.

Because I go very slow to take in each room, I spent 2 hours here, not including the cafe stop upstairs (beautiful place to sit down and refresh). Audio guide is included with 10 euros admission and I like how the audio guide is simple walkthrough that points and explains the highlights. Simply love the "lived-in" museum experience.
