Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

When it comes to learning, you want the highest standards and instructors who engage with you. It helps if the instructors have years of experience and tens of thousands of sea-miles too, and have been in just about every potential "situation" there is, so they can take things in their stride with confidence. Salana Sailing checks all those boxes, and a few more you haven't even considered.
But remember, you're on holiday, too... ...Salana Sailing certainly do, and after a week aboard you'll find their passion infectious - and your shorts perhaps a little tighter, because their exceptional service and diverse menu aboard is unrivalled - you'll be amazed what you can do with a two-burner stove! And that's the deal - not only do you learn the ropes and hopefully pass an assessment or exam, you also learn that living in a confined space can be incredibly comfortable, and there's no need to leave the creature comforts ashore when you cast off.
Get booked!

Gareth will be wincing with that butchering of nautical sayings (his own mastermind subject), but I have to say that after spending a full week doing my Day Skipper course with Salana Sailing, I couldn’t have asked for a better combination of top quality patient instruction in such a lovely relaxed social sailing environment. It was my first time doing such a course and I had an absolute ball. The mornings were spent topping up on theory, followed by practical boat manoeuvres and then finishing the day off with lively evenings in local restaurants with excellent company all around. No eye cream will get rid of those laughter lines and I now know the meaning of the saying ‘Three sheets to the wind’! Anna and Gareth are a super couple that work really well together and create a lovely atmosphere on their boats. They go out of their way to make sure you enjoy the sailing experience as much as they do and have words of encouragement for everyone, regardless of their sailing level. It was no surprise to hear that the majority of their clients are repeat business and I for one will be happy to join that crew. Thanks a million to you both xx plus one for Quirky x

Dear Paula, thank you so much for your lovely (and very funny) words. You were absolutely fantastic and such great company on the boat. It was a pleasure having you, getting to know you and sharing with you both our sailing passion and also our daily life. Thank you fo having been so amazing. We still laugh when we remember of all the jokes and we keep on mentioning you on a daily basis. You are always welcome to come whenever you want wherever we are in the world. You have 3 new fans (yes Qwerky too is a fan)

Salana Sailing is by far the best way to complete your Day Skipper theory and practical course. If you want to immerse yourself in sun, sea and great company, look no further! I’ve just returned from Malta, where my theory and practical training was all done on the boat over a period of two weeks. This is definitely the best way to learn, understand, and enjoy sailing. Gareth and Anna are fantastic instructors, whose love of sailing is the most beautiful gift you will take away with you when you return home. I look forward to my next trip on Salana in the Canary Islands!

Dear Maria, it was a joy having you on the boat and you are now not only one of our clients but you are a friend who has taken up a space in our heart. It was great having you on the boat and so trilled to see another person get the sailing bug. Looking forward to seeing you soon in the Canaries!

Having sailed 3 times with Salana Sailing I would have no hesitation in recommending them.
I first sailed on Salana in Malta with a group of friends – it was our first experience of sailing and Gareth and Anna made us feel at ease straight away. We had great fun, fabulous weather, good food and learned so much – we were delighted to become Competent Crew!
Our next trip was to spend Christmas and New Year in Tenerife – completely different sailing to Malta and a great way to get some Winter sun. Gareth taught us new skills and 3 of us completed our Day Skipper practical.
My latest trip with Gareth was from Tenerife to Gibraltar via Morocco – a fabulous sailing adventure! Moving Salana and sister ship Felicity from their Winter home in Tenerife to their Summer home in Malta is such an awesome trip and such a privilege. Besides seeing new countries, I met new friends, sailed under a canopy of stars, saw whales and dolphins and learned so much and more about sailing. I was only doing half but what an amazing sailing experience completing 789 miles in 10 days.
Sailing with Salana Sailing is fun but safe. The boats are extremely well maintained and very clean and comfortable. Gareth and Anna are wonderful hosts and great company. They have a wealth of sailing experience which they are more than willing to share with you. Whether you are a beginner or a sailing pro, Gareth and Anna will tailor your holiday so that you will get the best from it. And I, for one, can’t wait for my next trip...

Dear Janet, thank you for your very kind words. It is always a pleasure having you on the boat. You are great fun but most of all a genuine person who everyone enjoys being with on a boat. Looking forward to more adventures together ;)

I participated in the second mileage trip of last year, and it was 34 days unlike any other in my life! I knew Gareth and Anna from previous sailing experiences, and I was familiar with their yachts, however, this was something entirely out of my comfort zone, but the knowledge and support provided by Gareth and Anna and the other skippers on the passage meant the whole experience was fluid - I can't say flawless as there is a lot which cannot be controlled by man alone, namely the weather! The boats are extremely well kept and were fully provisioned before and during the passage. The trip was structured with plenty of downtime between the longer legs, although these gave opportunities for fantastic overnights; night watches are a true life enhancing experience. Anna took care to structure the crews based on personality and prior experience, so most people came as singles knowing no-one else, and this wasn't an issue at all, from day one onwards everyone was welcomed in and part of the team, even if they were only stepping on for one leg. If you are looking for a bareboat charter, a skippered charter, an instructed course, or indeed just want to build your miles, Salana Sailing operates out of Malta in the summer and Tenerife in the winter, and - twice a year - all the miles in between!

I spent some time with Salana Sailing in Malta in the summer of 2016 and had a great time.
Anna-Maria and Gareth were both brilliant, their boats are well maintained and there was no shortage of food and drink on offer. I've since done my Day Skipper Theory and will be going back to Salana for my Day Skipper Practical (this time in The Canaries during the winter). No doubt after that there'll be some mile builder trips too. Really looking forward to learning how to sail and sail well from these guys !

Salana Sailing is just the best. I chose it based on TA reviews, which promised solid instruction and plenty of fun. Good call, TA community!
Anna Maria was helpful with the communications and payment up front and went out of her way to help me organize my trip to Lanzarote. Upon arrival, I was happy to find our boat, Felicity, was in excellent condition and well-provisioned. Gareth and Anna Maria clearly take pride in their boats and take good care of them.
I immediately liked my instructor, Maddie. I did a skills refresher course, and she did a terrific job plotting out each day to ensure we covered all the key material, but also had plenty of time to relax in the sun and just sail around. She explained things comprehensively, and whenever a dicey moment arose (parking boats in a busy marina is hard!), she kept her cool and offered perfect instructions. Maddie, Gareth, and all the sailors were just lovely. I had a lot of fun, ate great food, learned plenty, and left with some new friends. Can’t wait to sail with Salana again!

Gareth and his team are fanatastic. Second week sailing with Gareth very knowledgeable and skilled but great fun. Just had a sailing skills week so was able to go at our pace with what we wanted to. Would sail with Salana every day if I could.

We arranged all via email. No probs, no weird requirements or rules.
Upon arrival, the boat was ready, so we simply entered, like in a hotel. It was a simple course for six days with a very relaxed, knowledgeable trainer and fully flexible schedule. I felt like I was on a cruise ship, but indeed learned a lot ranging from navigation and wind directions to safety on while sailing. All structured and well organized. I am planning to return.
