- Grace WHalifax, United Kingdom95 contributionsWell worth a visitStumbled across this as we got off at the last stop from bus ride from Valetta Harbour . We went up in the lift .When we got there it was beautiful with magnificent views. Great place to then wander down through Valetta. So lovely up there we went back for a second visitVisited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 October 2023
- Jenny WManchester, United Kingdom72 contributionsBeautiful viewsBeautiful views across the Grand Harbour. Lots of benches to sit and enjoy the view and lovely gardens. One of my favourite places to visit. Don't miss the Saluting Battery firing the cannons at 12pm and 4pm.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 12 December 2023
- GrandTour509524529666 contributionsLovely viewsIf you want to witness the Saluting battery, it takes place at 12 and 4 Monday to Saturday, so get there a bit early for a good spot along the balcony. You will get wonderful views of the harbour and the three cities across the harbour. From here there is a lift you can use for €1 taking you down to the harbour if you want to get the ferry over to the three cities. It's €2 single/ €3.80 return. Definitely worth visiting the Lower Gardens too.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 12 February 2024
- angeleyes27Brigantine, New Jersey5,336 contributionsNice view over the harborThis is only about 2-3 blocks from the cathedral & overlooks the harbor. It is at the top of the fortress walls. It has a public garden with statues, monuments & you can see cannons below. Nothing to do here though but admire the view or sit and relax, which is worthwhile. - DaisyChain12Hitchin, United Kingdom2,128 contributionsWorth a visit for the cannon, and some welcome shade and a drink! We went here a few times. There are places to sit, some portacabin toilets, and a lovely cafe where you can get drinks. There are trees for shade which is quite welcome! We made sure we were there to watch the cannon going off at 4pm. The overlooking level is free or you can pay 3€ to watch 5m away from the cannon!Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 April 2024
- phil-the-badgerThornbury, United Kingdom448 contributionsA lovely shaded escapeA lovely little garden. Interesting arches and sculptures. Beautiful views over the Grand Harbour. A good place to watch the firing of the cannon at 12.00/4pm for free. Nice little cafe selling reasonably priced drinks and snacks. The lift is certainly worth the 1 euro fee for the experience.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 May 2024
- Charis CNicosia, Cyprus337 contributionsGreat Panoramic ViewsA very nice location that worth visiting for its panoramic views. We were not very lucky as there was a lot of dust in the atmosphere. Aim to visit the place at noon if you would like to attend the canon salute. There was a note that there is no canon salute on Sundays so be sure you check schedule if you aim to see the ceremony.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 May 2024
- Diane SSouthampton, United Kingdom275 contributionsFree with a great viewFree to visit. If you arrive by local bus to the depot you can walk through the centre and arrive at the upper Barrakka Gardens. If you arrive by the harbour you can either walk up or use the lift (a nominal charge). It was mostly on a level - you could see a few flower borders and trees. The arches and historic plaques lead you to the walls with a view down to the cannons (fired daily at noon and 4 pm) and beautiful harbour. You can pay a fee and go down to witness the reenactment and cannon firing or watch it from the top. Not as big as we thought.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 June 2024
- Bill SLiverpool, United Kingdom48 contributionsA pleasant place to visit when there are no cruise ships in the port.We enjoyed the gardens but to be fair we liked the Lower Barrakka Gardens more and thought the views were better. I loved the small green Lizards seen around both gardens. large crowds assemble to see the guns being fired avoid this time if you don't like crowds.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 June 2024
- Amanda W1,149 contributionsBeautifulLovely gardens which only get busy when the gun firing is taking place. Still worth visiting at that time to listen to the commentary and hear the gun fire. Lovely flowers, statues and great views over the harbour. The Barrakka Lift will take you down to the port for cruise ships and boat tours.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 3 July 2024

By English standards this is a small park, planted up flower beds and a few trees overlooking the harbour, but it's pleasant enough. The main reason for our visit was to see the firing of the four o clock cannon. This is re-enacted by the historical society with all the ceremony of yester year as a fundraising spectacle. It's very popular so arrive early and take your place on the terrace overlooking the Saluting battery or pay 3 euros and go down to the battery itself. If you watch from the top be sure to put something in the collecting tin on the way out!

We visited here on day 2 and 4 of our week in Malta and enjoyed our visit both times even though the weather was really wet and windy on the first visit. The worst for 10 years we were told.
Beautifully laid out gardens with monuments and fountains.
Toilets are available here.
Great views out over the grand harbour and the canons. ( if you would like to see the Canon fired at noon or 4.00pm it is worth paying the small fee to go down the steps and see it up close and personal, as this includes a short talk afterwards and there are information boards taking you through each historical time period.

We liked to find a shady bench with a good view of the Grand Harbour outside the crowded times. Or ignore the view and sit by the fountain instead admiring the geraniums and spotting the occasional lizard basking in the sun. Open a sandwich bag and every pigeon in town is your friend but there were no seagulls.
We used the lift 1 Euro each return to take a one man water taxi across to Birgu; 2 Euros each way landing by the maritime museum ( closed ).
(They rock alarmingly if you are top heavy and not too nimble boarding.)
Then a stroll along Birgu marina waterfront to the fort followed by a cold drink under the parasols of the Chill bar watching the activity on the moored boats.

We often miss gardens like this one because we walk from one cafe to the next and seldom just soak up the sights in one place at a time. This is the ideal place for a picnic, chat and a proper "chill - ax". Beautiful views and a chance to rest those feet !

Built above the St. Peter and Paul bastion on the highest point of Valletta , the Upper Barrakka Gardens were originally the "recreation" areas for the knights of the Italian langue.
After the end of French domination in 1800 the gardens were open for the public and they are till today.
Nowadays all the tourists who visit Valletta have on their "to do/to see" list a stop at the Upper Barrakka Gardens - the views from its balcony , overlooking the Grand Harbor are just beautiful so it is understandable the crowds you see here.
Entrance to the Gardens is free of charge and trough the lift reconstructed in 2012 - you can easily and fast get up or down to the harbor level ...
In the garden you can see memorial plaques, memorials and statues scattered everywhere and there is a kiosk where you can sit and enjoy some cold (or warm) beverages.
It's balcony looking towards the Grand Harbor is also looking over the Saluting Battery - from there you can watch free of charge the gun firing at 12:00 or 16:00 ... although I recommend you pay those few euros and see the battery from closer.
Overall a very nice place to be checked out and ... a Landmark of Valletta.

This wonderful garden is a tranquil place to visit at any time of day, with bucolic greenery and a sense of calm away from the city's bustle. There are gun salutes at noon and at 4pm which are well worth a visit, but even if you miss them, you still get a beautiful view of the harbour. The cafe's beverages were very good.

Upper Barrakka in Valletta is a must place to visit whilst in Malta. It can boast of the most magnificent views of the Grand Harbour. Be sure to be there just a few minutes before noon to experience the re-enactment that takes place there every day. The garden also has a kiosk where one can have snacks and tea and coffee. Public toilets are also available in this place. A Must!!

This garden is open to the public built in 1661 by the Italian league of knights to offer them refuge from the city. The garden offers the best view of the three cities and the Grand harbor. The garden is located in the city of Valetta, t tv he capital of Malta.

As we walked from the elevator toward the gardens, the panorama looking down from the courtyard to the canons on the level below and then down to the harbor was magnificent. From there we stepped through the arches and into a beautiful Versailles-like garden with carefully manicured flower beds of all colors, a lovely fountain, and statues of Churchill and other revered war heroes. It was a lovely, shady place to sit and enjoy the views.

Went on the bus to Valletta, checked to make sure there were no cruise ships in port that day as it can get very busy, you do not get chance to look over from the upper gardens down to the battery where the canons go off every day at midday. Beautiful views over an amazing harbour. The gardens are a lovely place to sit and have a drink and a local cheese cake while watching the world go by. You must visit this place if you go to Valletta, If you are not afraid of heights go down the highest lift outside I have ever been on, take in the views from the ground and for just 1 euro you can get the lift back up unless you are energetic and walk up the steps back. You can check whether there are cruise ships in on the day of your visit by going on line and asking ships today in Valletta harbour, it is much nicer to visit when there is no ships in port. Enjoy it.

As others have said, very close. However, rather than approaching it from the centre of Valletta, the simplest is to enter the city via the main gate, walk straight down Republic street about 100m before turning right (Triq id Nofsinhar), past Piazza Jean de Valette and taking Castille street (off Castille Place) to arrive at the Upper Barrakka gardens (5-10 minutes from the Gate).
The view is the main attraction rather than the garden itself.

How long does it typically take at both Upper and Lower Barrakka Gardens?
Written 19 February 2019
It depends how long you want to stop.
From Upper Barrakka you can admire an amazing view, it could take from 5 min to even half and hour.
Lower Barrakka are smaller, maybe you can visit them a bit faster.
To go from one to another it takes just 10 minutes of walking.

Could anyone please tell me where the lift to Upper Barrakka Gardens is in relation to the ferry from Sliema
Written 9 November 2015
It is at the opposite side of Valetta which involves walking uphill and steps or you can walk around the perimeter wall of Valletta

Can you walk to the Upper Barrakka Gardens from the Grand Harbour?
Written 26 January 2015
Yes you can, but it's a winding route. Go through the short tunnel and follow round to the left to Victoria Gate. Through the gate and turn left up the steps and at the top turn right over the bridge (the Bridge Bar is worth a visit in the evening ; especially Friday evening when there is a jazz band playing during the warmer months).
The Grand Harbour Hotel should be in front of you (that's where we always stay) -- go straight up Battery Street and then up the steps, or to the other side of the hotel up the steps of Ursula Street. The gardens are in front of you.
The new lift is easier. Nearly 200 feet high with views of the harbour as you go up and it costs just 1 euro each. If you time your arrival right you will catch the noon gun being fired from the Saluting Battery just below the gardens overlooking the harbour.
