About
The Saluting Battery is one of Malta's most vibrant visitor attractions where history is brought to life daily! Located high along Valletta's eastern historic ramparts it enjoys unrivalled spectacular views of the Grand Harbour and its surrounding fortified towns. It is also perhaps the oldest saluting battery still in operation anywhere in the world. Here one can see a fully restored gun powder magazine, an artillery side-arm store, a handsome collection of original muzzle-loading artillery , ammunition and equipment and get a close-look at the saluting guns. The battery is equipped with audio-guides but guided torus in English are also available three times a day at 11.00, 12.30 And 15.00Hrs.

    Bangastic!
Highly recommended! Prepare for a loud bang and an exciting tour afterwards. You can watch the battery salute from the gardens area, however the entrance is only 3 EUR and it is really worth it to hear a lot more about it in the tour given by the Maltese solider. Our guide was great, engaging and knowledgeable, gave us really interesting explanations regarding historical context. The whole experience was interesting and educational.

Get your visit to Valletta started with a bang!
I have to call out Jon (Jeán?) for an excellent tour of the saluting battery. Looking very smart in his period uniform, he kept us engaged with interesting facts and back story as we participated in the tour. Well worth the money and an impressive ‘salute’ at 4pm to boot.

Don't miss this one - excellent!!!
We nearly didn't take the guided tour but were so glad that we decided to opt in!!!(no extra charge for this) The guide was by far the best we have experienced. He knew every detail concerning the battery and it's history and communicated it perfectly(and also with nice touches of humour here and there too!) Lot's to see there from the spot with a great view of the original "3 cities" A great couple of hours spent indeed! Thoroughly recommend. Thank you very much!

A great experience at the Battery.
We were very pleasantly surprised by our 30 minute tour. The guide was very knowledgeable and touched on a lot of Malta history, military history and cannons and artillery. His knowledge and enthusiasm made it a great experience. We then came back for the 4pm cannon firing, lots of fun!

Great tunnel tour and don’t miss the noon firing of the cannon
Jean was an excellent guide. He was very patient and knowledgeable and able to answer my many questions. I would say that the saluting battery, the tunnel tour and the War Room tours are well worth the prices and can take up close to 1/2 day. My ticket for the tunnel tour didn’t cover all the war rooms but I had a ticket for that, too. While there was a little bit of redundant information, it was really a good thing because there is SO much history to absorb.

    Well worth paying !
Overlooking the Grand Harbour, the views alone make this well worth a visit. The firing of the gun takes place at midday and 4 pm and it’s well worth paying the €3 to enter the saluting battery itself to watch and get up close to the cannons. The cheapskates who gather on the upper level to watch rather than paying the entry don’t get as close a view and also miss a very good tour of the battery which is included in the admission. Andrew, out guide, gave a very informative and interesting tour of the layout and history of the battery and the technical development of the artillery.

Start your trip to Valletta with a bang!💥
A great place to start our short trip to Valletta. The entry to the Battery is on €3 which gets you up close and personal to the firing. The Re-enactors are knowledgeable and put on a great show explaining he history of the Saluting Battery and key moments in history. They also give a demo of how they prep the guns for firing. After the firing, there is a 40 minute talk about the Battery itself which is interesting. If you don’t want to part with €3 then you can watch from the top but you will need to get there early to get a space.

    Thoroughly recommended!
Excellent guided tour around the guns by our guide Stefano. Very informative from an historical point of view. Watched the midday firing of the gun from the battery. The tour was about 45 minutes and for 3 euros it was excellent vfm and well worth a visit if you're in Malta!

    A must visit in Malta!
What an amazing experience. Stefano was the chosen member to fire canon 1 today. This is a must visit and is well worth the 3 euro entry fee. Following the cannon fire, Stefano gave an amazing 45 minute talk on the history of Malta and the historical significance of the Saluting battery. Without doubt, everyone should visit this!

Great experience to watch up close
Although we knew we could view up top we were happy to pay €3 to go downstairs as it was so much better to get up close and hear all about the history. The staff were really friendly and the view is amazing. A must do when you are in Malta!

Some sophisticates will find this event a bit cheesy, much ado about nothing. A lot of pomp over a 5 minute charade of lighting a wick and
shooting a cannon ball. I get that. But so is the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, the twice daily cattle drive in Fort Worth, and the marching of the ducks at the Peabody Hotel, in
Memphis. So get into the spirit. The cannon fires
twice daily, at 12 and at 4. You can stand 20 meters behind the guns, for admission of
3 euros, or you can watch for free, from the
vantage of the gardens directly above. So sure,
It’s tourist schtick, but it’s fun, and a great video
to send friends, overlooking the Grand Harbour.

We bought the heritage pass which gave access to 4 attractions plus a close up view of the noon day salute. The ww2 war rooms and Malta at war exhibition gave a great insight into the hard times suffered by the people of Malta. We enjoyed the bayonet and musket demonstrations on the fort tour. The costumed guides were humorous and informative. Allow at least 2 days to see all the sites.

My wife and I had a five day trip to Malta, and visited the stunning capital city of Valletta on day three. The Saluting Battery and firing of the gun at 4pm was one of the highlights of our whole trip. Pomp and pageantry at its best. Definitely one not to miss.

Very interesting museum, the guided tour last 1,5 hours, visiting the bunker under the battery, getting out on time to see the 4 pm shot. It is very precisely restored, and wonderfully explained by the guide. Unfortunatly the tour is only in english, but the guide spoke slowly enought to allow not native speaker people to understand everything.
Absolutely an activity to do in Valletta

This experience was brilliant. You can see the canons fire for free, definitely, but for only €3 you can go down onto the battery and watch from the side as they load and fire the canon at 12pm and 4pm. They then give you a short 30 minute tour to explain the process and other facts regarding the battery.

The gunner who did this when we visited as a young lad called Isaac. When we asked his age, he was only 17! We were really early, so he invited us over to the canon and explained to myself and my husband how the canons are loaded. He spoke with good humour and clarity and confidently answered questions. He explained what they do at the battery itself and why.

He confidently fired the canon in front of a massive crowd and then proceeded to do a tour to those who had bought tickets. He really
Clearly explained about the port, the used of the canons and different artillery used, why they used it, why the canons were there and the differences between the two. He was so confident and knowledgable, speaking very clear English (his first language was clearly Maltese) to a good number of adults. I certainly learned a lot about the battery from Isaac which rivalled other tours from places which had cost a lot more.

We are not ones to tip (being British !!) but we felt that they should and could charge so much more for the experience and added a donation, because this is a not for profit experience! The entry allows us to go back down at any point in the day, and as we are only half was through or day we will definitely be going back a bit later to make sure we saw everything, it’s very hot and we, again, are a bit too pale and British to stand outside for long!!

Lithe battery Israeli is well present with clear signage, has a little shop and a toilet, as alluded to, not much shade but nothing can be done about that.

Everyone must visit this even if it’s just to learn a little bit about the canons!

Having visited the Laserus War Rooms we visited the Saluting Battery for the noon firing. Impressive in terms of noise and smoke.

For Covid-19 they make you wear a mask and check you temperature. Nothing too onerous.

After the firing we had a guided tour, conducted by Ben, which gave a great insight in to how the guns operate, the type of guns and the history of the gun battery.

Not a high amount of shade so be prepared. A very small gift shop does sell cold drinks.

Great for 30 mins. We had two boys aged 10 and 13 who enjoyed it.

Free access for the month of July 20.

We were luckily enough ot staying next to the Saluting Battery and had entry to it as part of entrance to the War Rooms. The firing of the cannon at midday is impressive and one that we would not have missed. Lovely views from the grassy area with eaight cannons to see. The tradition is maintained by the uniformed officers in charge. Definitely worth a visit if you are in Valletta.

Great experience in Malta. We loved it. For 3€ each you can see a almost private demonstration about how cannons work, the difference between them and, specially , you can see the saluting closely!! It's a very short cerimony (one at 12h and another at 16h) but a wonderful experience. Loved all the explanations that Humberto gave us and it was a pleasure feel the smell of the powder. We recommend a visit!!

This is a twice daily gun salute fired from the gardens. It’s operated by a civilian charity and the employees are not members of the military.

The salute is conducted in a military fashion in uniform based on Royal Artillery Blues with a Pith helmet.

For a couple of euros, you can go down to the firing platform and be given a short guided tour of the area by one of the employees - ours was the chap who had just fired the salute.

If you’re feeling difficult, elbow a few tourists out the way and loudly complain that they just aren’t up to the standard of the Honourable Artillery Company at the Tower of London and conclude that “They’re just colonials, anyway.”

Definitely worth seeing, if only to work out what the loud hangs you keep hearing are!

The box office for this tour is a bit hidden but once you find it it is very logical. The reception lady was so nice to us and very attentive. Nate (our tour guide) also helped my fiance and I to pick some souvenirs according to our families military taste. The tour itself was extraordinary. As a museum worker myself I appreciate a guide that knows his / her / their ins and outs and has a profound knowledge on the subject they speak on.

Nate was attentive to the whole group (mix of well known and versed idnividuals in war history, with people also with no previous knowledge and as well as kids).

The tunnels gave me chills and are impressively well conserved. The how was explained in the tour, so I won't spoil it.

PLEASE. If you do have a change, you NEED to visit this amazing historial museum.
