- Sandra S1 contributionFabulous Tour!!Two of us took a private tour to St Hilarion, Kyrenia castle and ship museum, then finally Bellapais Monastery, all in northern Cyprus. It was amazing, our tour guide Cemal was lovely and shared the fascinating history with us along the way, and the lunch was delicious! Would definitely recommend!Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 26 November 2023
- Hakan HPrague, Czech Republic9 contributionsA place to see, attitude to avoid.Amazing views,’poor tourism attitude. The guy in the cafeteria locked the viewing balconies because no one is spending money. The government builds the facilities and he owns the rights to do as he likes. And we wonder why we don’t get tourists in the north.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 31 March 2024
- SlinkywhiteMundesley, United Kingdom65 contributionsStunning viewsWell worth a visit. The views are stunning. We went at 9am when it opened so it was a bit cooler. The shop that serves a lovely refreshing lemonade didn’t open until 10/10.30am. The only negative point is the amount of litter and cigarette ends!Visited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 12 August 2024
- sallygamble1Wokingham, United Kingdom160 contributionsHiking HilarionAmazing castle to visit with beautiful views from the top! Many stairs and steps along the way, so takes time to go up and much easier to go down. Cafe in middle (was closed when we were there, but we came as it opened) that does lemonade I believe. Definitely recommend to anyone visiting to check it out.Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten 30 September 2024

Amazing visit to the castle with its many parts and sections to explore. The climb to the peak and the view from there are worth it. The cafetaria inside the middle section of the castle had to be closed after a fire destroyed the old buidling in March 2021. There is a small restaurant for refreshments at the entrance area. The separate toilet facilities are run by a private operator, which were closed at the time of the visit. Presently, PCR test or proof of vaccination have to be presented at the ticket booth. Also be aware of the revised opening hours of the castle due to Covid-19. The castle is closed on Sundays. The timings on the official website have not been updated to this regard. Also inform yourself in advance about any last minute changes with regard to any closure of the access road. We have been informed that the access road might be closed, if the army is using the exercise grounds along the access road.

Great place to visit, the views are lovely.
Some parts are a bit confusing and you are unsure of where to go.
I think we only did half because some of the stairs had rope across.
If you go in the summer be sure to take water

We had a taxi driver take us from the market place and then he waited two hours for us to explore and get to the top as well as eating a picnic lunch. He charged us 35 euros and that included taking us back to our hotel.
It is a very difficult site to negotiate and not one which anyone who has any difficulty in walking should attempt but if you do get to the top the views and the sense of achievement are immense.
It really is a marvel as to how the castle was originally built and there are lots of standing remainsto study and speculate. There is a cafe part way round but it was closed when we were there, probably out of season.

Saint Hilarion Castle is worth the visit for it’s history ( a good guide is a bonus ) to get to hear all the place’s history on the spot. The views are fantastic worth the rather challenging climb .The castle is divided into three levels .There is also a small coffee shop where One can buy some very nice carob syrup and taste some local tea.

Absolutely stunning view and there are parts that are very well preserved. It would be great if they had more information boards. It is a steady hike up, and if it is summer I would recommend going when it first opens (though it is still hot), take plenty of water and sunscreen.

there are 3 main castles for exploration - Kantara, Buffavento, St Hilarion. St Hilarion is bigger than Kantara Castle so more nooks and crannies to explore. suggest allocating 1-2hours for exploration. entrance fee is 15 TL.

One of the must visits near Kyrenia/Girne. You must be prepared for many steps and steep climbs (all perfectly safe). Fantastic views from each of the scetions. Would suggest visiting as early as you can to avoid the heat.
A previous review mentioned the army - they were exercising on the access road and using the firing range but neither impacted on our visit (the bangs shattered the silence though).
Well worth visiting even if you only go up to the second section.

Having completed this today at 9:00am, the heat was fine. It is a hard walk up all the cobblestone steps but worth every bit of sweat. At all levels the views are breathtaking. It’s not just about the views, lots of different rooms and history to explore on both the up and down journey. Little cafe and toilets were a bonus. 60TL for a family of 4,bargain!!

We are in our 70s and only moderately fit. We probably will not try to make it to the top, but should we be able to climb to the half way point cafe? Thanks, Arthur

Will the castle be open to the public during the Byram holiday 25-27 June 2017? Thanks.

Hi,
the terrain within the castle would male it almost impossible to use a stroller/buggy. There are many irregular stepson rocky oaths as the castle is built into the mountainside. a baby backpack would be more suitable. I would also suggest that it's a hot sweaty clamber to the top, and a little one might not be best equipped to deal with the heat etc, and mummy might not have the relaxing visit she's hoping for. Sorry for the delayed response, you've probably been by now.
