The journey up the mountain was breathtaking and required a lot of walking. The hike up to the mines could be daunting for anyone with a disability or possibly small children. The views of the lake and towns below provide excellent photo opportunities. The guides during the salt mine tours narrate in multiple languages. The outfits worn and the modes... More

Hallstatt is such a charming place and when visiting Hallstatt, I think a visit to the salt mines is a must. We had purchased the tickets online, directly from their website and so were able to board the funicular without having to get in lines. Note though, the time printed on the tickets is the time for the tour to... More

Had an enjoyable time on this tour. The walk itself from the tram station though fairly long was quite nice and scenic. We had to dress up in mining overalls at the beginning of the tour following which was a walk through the mining tunnels. We were briefed by the guide as well as through multi-media presentations and light shows... More

(2011) It was so interesting to learn about the salt mine and take this walk through time and history. The best part was the slide at the end of the tour!!

Fun activity for any age! A tiny-bit claustrophobic at some spots, but fun definitely takes over and you forget about anything else! Requires some walking to get to the salt mine tour entrance from the lift (about half-mile). Beautiful view from the top!

Salz Welten is an underground salt mine and is located in the hills directly above the town of Hallstatt, Austria. This mine advertises that it is the first and oldest salt mine in the world but I am not sure if that is true (it looks old though). Hallstatt is located on the western shore of Lake Hallstatt about 50... More

Loved the history and definitely the slides. There are hidden shows as well. And the final train ride out of the mines. Really worth it.

At first I read that the mines were shut in November but they extended the opening months but bear in mind the last guided tour of the mines is at 2:30pm. The tour lasts about an hour and includes a cable car up the mountain. The tour had a great mix of history, geography, seeing things, tasting things and fun... More
