About
Cafe - Shop - Spectacular Architecture / Graz as "Cultural Capital of Europe 2003" - an impetus to a fresh start. Graz-born Robert Punkenhofer inspired the New York artist Vito Acconci to design an accessible artificial island. The project was realized as a 47m-long reticular steel construction. The curved and twisted shape can be associated with a half-opened shell. In its open part, wave-like blue benches form an amphitheatre for events of all kinds. Under the domed glass roof, a cafe in blue and white offers the opportunity to enjoy being close to Mur - a new feeling even for locals. What is called an island, is a ship in fact. She is held by an anchor and is stabilized additionally by the two footbridges connecting her to the river banks.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is visually striking from the outside, and mildly impressive from the inside. We stopped for mid-afternoon snacks and drinks as we wandered this part of Graz. The setting was comfortable, the menu somewhat limited (their selection of tortes was more extensive than that of savory snacks), the service marginal. I imagine that at sunset it would be worth a visit.

Visited out of curiosity, even meant to stop for a cup of coffee. The cafe outside was closed so we walked down the stairs, in doubt if we want to stay there. I took a photo and the waiter yelled at me not to take photos there! Since when have public places like cafes been places where you may not photograph? Really odd. The rudeness made the choice for us, we walked away and went to the old town for a nice drink and ice cream instead.

My spouse and I are visited The Murinsel on 15/4/13. It is a very interesting concept. We recommend visiting for the views & architecture but give the cafe a miss as the service we received from the woman at the cafe was appallingly rude.

I took this photo from the next bridge over Mur river, by night. The building is a modern one, very trendy and contrasting with the old architecture of the city. The cofehouse is remarcable and the cofee is very good...and also the icecream, tee...Locz Ferenc is a very kind guy working there, he has lots of stories to tell and he make the cofee time very pleasant.

While I do try to find something possitive to say about even largely negative things, this one truly left me struggling.

We passed through this "Attraction" as part of a self guided walking tour featured in a brochure we picked up at the tourist information office. I can honestly say that I don't think the tour would have been diminished in any way had we chosen to cross the river via the nearby bridge rather than this "Island".

I'm not a claustrophobic person, but I couldn't wait to get out of this almost as soon as I was inside it. The pierced sheet metal construction that makes up a big part of the structure made me feel like I was trapped in a giant pasta strainer. The interior also felt distinctly unfinished to me; I don't know how anyone could relax and enjoy a coffee in such surroundings.

Architecturally, it's not particularly striking inside or out and any strength it might possess in that context is easily overshadowed by the Kunsthaus modern art gallery that's only a stone's throw away from it.

I wish I could say something possitive about it, but it left me at a total loss in that regard.

You won't miss a thing in Graz if you give this one a miss.

It has never turned a profit for anyone. Everyone likes to pass through it (for free) to get from one side of the river to the other and/or look at it from the Hauptbrücke or riverbanks, but it was a waste of money that might better have been spent on other things some other way.Cut it loose and let it drift down to the Black Sea, I say.

I love the vibe inside, from the great architecture, to seeing the river right next to you. The coffee was great and the prices are regular prices, super reasonable. Defintley going back, and 100% recommend it.

Great idea to build the terrace and the restaurant in the middle of the river. It was nice to sit down and have a small drink, not hot even in the middle of the August day.
