Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

More beautiful than the Opera house in Vienna, smaller, but better.
Pretty interior with classical red velvet and gold. Good acustics.
Nice terrace with a good view of the city.

When you think of opera houses most people think of La Scala, Royal Opera House or those in Vienna or Paris. The Graz one is also a real treat - and recently recognised as one of the best in the world. Performances there are reasonably priced and the orchestra is excellent.

I planned a visit to Opera Graz with my group of 23 high school students from Massachusetts and their exchange partner students from Graz. It being the end of the season, the last work on the program was Bernstein's West Side Story, libretto delivered in German, songs sung in English. Weird, but workable. Still, I wasn't sure what to expect here in Austria's second city: an overly operatic version of this classic, or a dumbed-down musical by overtrained opera singers. I was pleased to find they found a happy medium and put on a great show. The leads were all conservatory trained, both for classical opera and musicals, and put in excellent performances. The supporting cast did a fine job, and the resident ballet company put on an incredibly muscular, high flying dance show--not exactly Broadway but pretty darn good. All in all, a very create re-imagining of '50s-era Spanish Harlem and New York gang rivalries. Because my kids had zero prior experience with opera, I was concerned how we'd prepare them for the experience. The educational office of the opera arranged a 2 hour workshop for them, teaching them some of the dance moves they'd see on stage, plus doing body awareness, vocal and movement work. It was a roaring success. My kids thus had their first experience with the most famous music of Massachusetts' most famous modern composer, born about 15 miles from their school, in a beautiful, classical opera house in the middle of Styria. Tickets were affordable, especially with a student discount, and all the seats had an excellent view.

Performance - average.
Seating - the worst I've experienced in an opera house.
Staff - average to poor.
Building inside - needs work, chipped paint all over the place.
Sound quality - average.
I was looking forward to the evening. I left after the first act! Overall very disappointing all round. Considering this is one of the first performances after lockdown it is totally unacceptable. I appreciate it is in Austria, no announcements in English. Even Belgrade is more "international".
I'd recommend not wasting your money, especially for top price seats. Riga still ranks #1 for smaller cities. Graz bottom of the league.

Wonderful performances. Graz has been nourishing young talents for many generations. Read the CVs of performers in the top houses around the world and many will have started their career in Graz. Performances always have a contemporary edge.

They not only have operas there but excursions too. For adult it costs 6€ for students 3€! The only sad thinks that it is in German, so you need to speak german and it takes around 1h. :) however, the history and stories are just amazing and the inside is brieftaking!! Very worth it! You need to ask in tickets office for these excursions inside :)

As a cultural centre, I would expect from a big beautiful opera house in second biggest city of Austria to be accessible for non German speakers. Well, I was wrong.
The opera house was so beautiful and the Tristan under Isolde production we saw was amazing, really world class. Top level of singers. I don't really understand why can't they have subtitles as well in English and not only in German, just as they do in so many opera houses around the world.
We used our phones to read the libretto in English. Lucky we sat in quite a secluded area and it didn't bother anybody.
Still, it was such an amazing experience I would do it again.

We love the Graz Opera with its Broadway repertoire and good orchestra. The architecture is fitting for a city built in 1128, complemented with good service and delicious Styrian cuisine, wine, and cheese. Very warm as its close to Italy!

If you think that this is not the " OPera Haus", you are mistaken. This is one of the best. They have got an international cast, they have a very good studi for young singers and the house itself is great. The same team Fellner and Helmer were the architect, who over 40 other opera houses and theaters designed in the Austro.Hungarian Monarchy. Baroque and rokoko elements, it was opened in 1899. Since than they play continuosly.
We had some very good performances, this time Händel: Xerxes.
Even those, who doesn't like baroque music, and operas, for them was also something special. Great voices, and the regie was amazing.

What is the dress code for the ballet? Would a tuxedo be suitable or not?
