And despite resisting the overwhelming urge to start singing Sound of Music songs, we do feel like we are in the atypical ‘alpine type’ township. The Salzach river runs through the centre of the township, with the Alps as an amazing background. The ‘old city’ comprises original medieval and baroque buildings (on the left bank), looking across to the 19th century ‘new city’ (right bank).Visited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 November 2023

- Barry T1 contributionSalzburg in SeptemberIf you do nothing else in Salzburg, make it to the Fortress Hohensalzburg in time for sunset. We enjoyed some of the most incredible views, even into the evening. The fortress itself is worth exploring. The old town is both charming and interesting from a historical point of view. Even if you aren't into Mozart, visit his birthplace to learn a bit about his life and the prodigious collection of work he produced before his death at age 35. There are plenty of good food options; Hotel Sacher was fabulous and we even found a vegan restaurant in the old town.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 September 2024

It was very pleasant to stroll along the banks of the Salzach River, either during the day or at night, when accessing the old city. Crossing the bridges, one can get pretty views of the surrounding area. It appeared to be very popular for locals to enjoy an evening picnic on the grassy banks.

Sazach River is a scenic river that separates the old and new city with bridges connecting the two.
We crossed the Makartsteg Bridge which is near Mirabell Gardens in the new city to cross over to the old city (Alstadt) and the bridge covered in love locks where couples show their eternal love for each other.
The Alstadt is historical with so many beautiful old buildings.

The Salzach river runs through the middle of the city and acts as a split through the town. As river it does what rivers do, flows with water. Its not the most visually spectacular river and is not a must see other that looking at it when you drive or walk over it.
There are some nice seating areas overlooking the river where you could sit and have lunch or just pass some time sitting there. Again, not a must do or see.

Not the most scenic or impressive, the river doesn't warrant much time for walking along, and difficult to capture any nice photographs... But who cares, Salzburg has plenty of other beauty.

The Salzach River separates the Old Town of Salzburg and the newer district. There are several bridges that cross it and it really adds something to the Salzburg experience.

Great views of the old city from the bridges. There was also a small market lining the banks of the river.

This river goes right through the town. With the bridges and churches it looks great. It was hot the day that I was there and the breeze along the river was very nice.
