If you are pressed for time and need to choose either to see the palace (inside) or enjoy the tour (audioguide) for the trick fountains, choose the fountains. It's really fun to hear about the archbishop who loved surprising his guests and getting them wet. (In the summer, I'm sure this is great ... but beware if you're visiting on a cold day because it could be unpleasant if you're wet and chilly.) We enjoyed seeing all the different fountains, especially those that had mechanized figures moving in a scene. How neat that they could make things like that work on water power and relatively simple mechanisms literally centuries before technology like computers were invented.

We took the bus, easy to get there and buses were very frequent, clean and inexpensive. Great audio tour and the water features were wonderful to watch. We got there at 10.30am and it wasn't too busy. If you want to get soaked you can, but for most you get a tiny spray of water on you. Took advantage of it being such a nice day to wander around the gardens and to view the pavilion from The Sound of Music and had a cooling drink in the cafe. We didn't bother going into the Schloss as our main purpose of visiting was to view the water features. I would strongly recommend.

A wonderful place that was founded more than 400 years ago.
Hellbrunn Castle was the summer residence of Archbishop Markus Sittikus, in whose park he developed a water-powered amusement park with fountains to entertain his guests.

All statues and objects are original and still run on water.
You get an audio guide for the tour, so you can go around the tour at your own pace.
There's plenty to marvel at on the tour.. A few fountains might get your clothes a little wet, but not too bad.

The tour ends at the large outdoor pool where carp swim.

There is also a cafe/restaurant in the area, there is a zoo next door and the Sound of Music pavilion is also in the area.

There are good maps and signs in the area.

Unfortunately, the water features are no longer characterized by a "guided tour". At the beginning, the "Audio Guide" introduced in the Corona period and not abolished again is pressed into one's hand and one may listen to the individual "stations" from the tape, which - logically - also does not answer any questions. At the beginning of the "guided tour" the group is stopped by the photographer whose photos can be purchased at the end of the tour. During our guided tour, not all stations were staffed, so many "water traps" did not go into operation. Unfortunately a disappointment if you know the water features of old.

These trick fountains are at Schloss Hellbrunn. They quite quirky and probably a lot of fun on hot day if you have kids. A curiosity. Worth seeing.

They sell separate timed tickets for the fountains.

We went to the water features at Hellbrunn Palace for the first time. With the Salzburg Card you can get in for no extra charge.
We were lucky enough to have had a fantastic warm day in April, which meant that the refreshment from the water fountains was fun. The staff were mostly very friendly and motivated at work. The various fountains and grottos were interesting and special. The audio guide was perfect, with brief (2-4 minutes) information each time.

Entry to these magical fountain is by guided tour only. The 'Salzburg Card' includes this. The tour and the fountains in themselves are nothing great but overall the experience is a good one with a few surprises, so be prepared to get a little wet and enjoy.

Take the bus no. 25 to Hellbrunn (about 20 minutes from the city centre) or the cruise Tour II. A good route to plan would be to go to spend some time at these fountains and then to proceed to 'Untersberg Cable Car' taking bus no. 25 in the direction opposite the city centre (last stop).

This is a very interesting place to spend a few hours. However, our first customer relations experience left us underwhelmed. You have to buy a ticket for a specific guided tour of the fountains, as you can't tour at your leisure. So we bought a 10:00am ticket and waited by the entrance. Along with others, at 10am, a group of kids with teachers approached and were taken in front of us at 10am. The person at the entrance said our group would leave shortly. At 10:15, another person showed up, and said the 10:20 group was going in next. We told the girl that we had 10am tickets (there were 15 of us), but she said "well you missed your time and you have to get another ticket". This did not go over well with our group, so we made lots of complaint noises and another guy came over and overruled the girl who did not want to help us.

Anyway, after getting in, you will be treated to examples of how the Arch Bishop liked to play tricks on his guests. Protocol was that a guest could not get up from the table before the Arch Bishop did, so he had water jets put into the seats of a table, and from his place at the end, he could turn on the water on everyone but himself. They ask for volunteers for this, so you will have warning. What I did not like was they often spray the crowd without warning, and not just a mist, but full of jets of water. So, if you dont want to get wet, look at the pavement. It it is soaked, DONT STAND THERE! I had the sneaking suspicion that the girl who was mad at our group when she was forced to let us in was secretly enjoying dousing the group with water from hidden jets, but maybe I'm just paranoid.

There are amazing water driven automatons, statutes and grottos to visit, but remember my warning about "wet pavement". The grounds outside the fountain area are not terribly interesting, but the main building is a good tour as well.

Side note, HellBrunn is where they relocated the Gazebo from Sound of Music where the oldest daughter danced with her new boyfriend and Maria and the Capt first kissed, so it's a stop on the Sound Of Music tour, but that tour allows no time for visiting HellBrunn, so you can come back another day. The local bus brings you right to the door.

The Hellbrunn Palace and Gardens are definately worth a visit if you have more than a day or two in Salzburg. You can get there and back on bus #25 from the Old Town and it takes about 15 minutes each way. However, we caught a boat (Tour II) from Marketsteg and enjoyed a 35 minute cruise up the river to the Palace. The cost of the boat cruise was 14 Euro per adult and we caught bus #25 back to town.

The palace itself is pretty, though not exactly awe-inspiring. The staff said it takes just 20 minutes to see the entire exhibition and that's about right. The audio-guide was useful and provided informative commentary without going into ridiculous amounts of detail.

The real attraction are the Trick Water Fountations. The tour guide spoke English, Italian and German, though its fair to say the German commentary lasted at least 3x longer than the English or Italian. Even so, the trick fountains themselves are a great attraction and kept our children (3&5) totally enthralled. The tour of the fountains lasted about an hour.

The craftsmanship and engineering involved is very impressive and the fountain tour was a highlight of our stay in Salzburg. The gardens are also very beautiful. This is the sort of place you could spend an entire afternoon simply soaking up the beauty of your surroundings.

Personally, I think its a fraction over-priced but this is nothing new in Austria. They charge for children 4+ which is a bit steep.

I'd definately recommend this attraction and if time and money allows do catch the boat up the river. Note that the boat only runs until 31 October after which it goes out of service until March.

The Palace of Hellbrunn and it's famous trick fountains are an absolute must see if you are traveling in the Salzburg area. Without being too much of a spoiler, let me say be prepared to get a little wet... but expect to have a wonderful time. Don't forget to show Identification if you are a senior citizen for a nice discount. Make friends with your garden tour guide for an extra special adventureous time. My mother and I laughed so hard from the time we got there until we left that our cheeks were sore when our tour was over. A piece of advice....let yourself go and have fun... you'll be glad you did.
