A lovely, peaceful place

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit, well worth the climb up all the stairs from the city. A beautiful, restful place.

quiet and reflective and see the evidence of generations of nuns kneeling and walking on the hard stone floors.

A beautiful location.... stunning views of the back of the city. See the gates that were used in the Sound of Music, it really is a must see place! The church itself is rather dark, but as a filming location as well as the views, you must not miss a walk up to the Convent!

Access to the convent is on a hill just outside of the main city center, which seems to attract less tourists and provides a chance for genuine reflection and admiration of gothic architecture.

As the oldest abbey of its kind in Europe it is a must see. It id quite small and by no means as imposing as other churches. It is worth the climb up the 130+ steps to get there

I primarily went to see the Nonnberg Convent because it was supposedly where the nuns sing "Maria" in "The Sound of Music," and that was going to be my token SoM site while I was in Salzburg. I did not get to see that supposed site (I assume it is somewhere in the convent itself, which is still a functioning... More

Amazing view of Salzburg from the top of the convent. Beautiful surrounding gardens and buildings. This is also were they filmed the scenes outside and through the gate of the convent in the Sound of Music.

We took the easier road (past the Steigl brewery) up to the Nunnery, avoiding the stairs. This was an easy way to reach it. Like many others, I went to see where Maria had been before becoming a Governess. We had little expectation of what we were about to see, but I'm glad we went as the Alter piece was... More

And so glad it did. Such a peaceful place above the city. Inside the convent, we were lucky enough to hear the nuns singing. The views are great and you get to see those scenes from the film!

Reason for us to be there was purely due to the movie sound of music. But it architectural coupled with serene location and ambience made the visit more than just that. Not something everyone would appreciate but if you have the time, worth to pay this place a visit.
