- Catherine GNice, France2,017 contributionsNice old townThe old town is very nice with all the churches, the restaurants, the museums. You can just walk to see the old town because cars aren’t allowed in this part of the city. There’s Mozart’s house and a lot of nice houses.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 12 September 2023
- EyeletBolton, United Kingdom5 contributionsSplendid sensational Salzburg! We arrived early on the first day of the Christmas market. Salzburg is perfect! So many beautiful buildings and sights. That day we had perfect weather with blue skies and sunshine giving a splendid backdrop to the Christmas trees. The next day we had horrendous weather but it didn't spoil our delight to be in such a fabulous place. Of course we did the Sound of Music tour which took us into the mountains and revealed interesting stories behind the famous scenes. I would love to go again to see and do all the wonderful things for which we had no time. A guided tour would be a good idea. Go! It would be impossible to be disappointed! Go to the Mozart restaurant and try the special Salzburg dessert modelled on 3 mountain peaks. The Holiday Inn was also excellent. Do go!Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 5 December 2023
- Wonderhorseuk62 contributionsGreat city, great time, we will go back again in the future.Salzburg is a wonderful location. We found it very clean, and never felt unsafe anywhere we went. There are lots of things to do and see - made even better/easier with purchase of a Salzburgcard which gives free or discounted entrance to many attractions there. For us, even without use of public transport it paid for itself and more over three days of attraction visits. Don't miss the walks up to high points over the city (the high fortress can be reached via the funicular railway. If you like Mozart, this place is a treasure chest for things to see - and then there's lots of Sound of Music stuff too.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 December 2023
- Ginges_revengeBrisbane, Australia5,859 contributionsNot the most riveting of old towns. The old town was nice but it wasn't the most exiting we'd seen. It was easy to get to from the main train station by taking local transport. It has some nice things to see but didn't have an exciting vibe. Even though there were a lot of people in the main tourist area, it didn't really have an interesting feeling. Not the best old town we'd been to.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 December 2023
- rosietomato155 contributionsMozart, Sound of Music, and Salzburger MozartkugelIf you get a chance, visit Salzburg. It is a beautiful little town and easy to walk in. Don't really need to do a formal walking tour. It is an easy walk and if you do your homework ahead of time you can learn about the Sound of Music (based in Salzburg) and Mozart house. Go up to the Fortress to the cafe for lunch. Yes, you have to pay for a tram ride but it is inexpensive and the views are fantastic as well as the food at the cafe. Make sure you find the shop or the Salzburger Mozartkugel, these are completely handmade chocolates with a nut center. They were created in 1890 by a local confectioner who didn't bother patenting his invention so everyone is free to make them. But to visit the shop and get some of the original chocolate balls either to eat yourself or bring home as gifts is worth the visit. I recommend both options!!!Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 25 December 2023
- Taniel VMontreal, Canada63 contributionsnot like I remembered...I hade visited this place, a long time ago. With my birth family. When I was a child (and when my sister, my father and my mother, were in this world…) I am willing to admit that I have changed, of course, since those old days. That the current, “modern” reality, could not correspond entirely to my childhood memories, feelings and impressions, in various regards. Having said that though, it is undisputable that the place itself has also changed. Too much. Alas… In any event, you definitely don’t need to stay in a hotel situated in the Old Town itself. You can easily get there from any other hotel in the general area.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 6 January 2024

The train cost included local Salzburg buses so when we arrived at the train station we took a 5 minute bus ride to Salzburger Altstadt (Old town), which is where most of the tourist attractions are located. All pedestrian in Old Town. If Recommend the self guided walking tour found online at travelyesplease.com. - David NHawthorne, California5,260 contributions⛪️ 🏬 Super Quaint Old Town 🏬 ⛪️This is a really beautiful and romantic old town area. There are many small shops, some expensive stores, and also cute cafes. There are no cars on these streets, so it is very relaxing to just stroll around and do some window shopping. There are a number of churches, fountains, and museums to visit as well, including Mozart's Geburtshaus (birth home). I recommend allocating a few hours for wandering and enjoying a cafe or two. Add more time if you want to deep dive in some churches or museums.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 14 May 2024

We started in Mirabelle gardens then went into the old city, past where Mozart was born & where he lived. Also visited the beautiful cathedral and a few of the beautiful squares. We loved it.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 May 2024

The 1st time I visited Salzburg was several years back as a day trip from Munich by train. I immediately fell in love with this old town but regretted not having enough time. Hence, decided to visit Salzburg again and this time around stayed a few nights so as to explore more of the absolutely beautiful Old Town.
Visiting during winter definitely has its advantage as there were lesser crowd. Loved how well the old town has been preserved, with the many wonderful architecture, shops, cafes and restaurants. A definite must visit when in Austria.

Salzburg is beautiful and is a must visit city which is not large and can be easily viewed on foot. The people were friendly and souvenirs are everywhere. Christmas shops are worth visiting too. The many places of Worship in close walking distance of each other are all worth visiting, Gertreidegasse annd Goldgasse offer a very good idea of Salzburg with their amazing wrought iron shop names displayed and must be walked and seen. Those familiar with the Sound of Music film will find the city even more enjoyable. The snow covered mountains made it special too when I visited in January.

Salzburg is one of my favorite city in Europe, you have to see the castle and view of Alps Mountain from the castle.
The streets in Salzburg were also wonderful. Don't forget a photo when you look the castle from the top of bridge

Beautiful old town and relatively compact.
The old city walls can still be seen in some parts while the Hohensalzburg Castle dominates from the hill. Various historical landmarks dot the old town.
The streets are narrow and winding, typical of medieval European towns yet paved and clean. These were the streets that Mozart, Von Karajan and other composers would have walked on in the past.
Even more recent, some parts of the old town was used as the scene for the famous The Sound of Music movie and the streets and shops that Maria and the Von Trapp children passed on the horse cart in the Do Re Mi song are still recognisable now.
We just came back from holiday in Austria but my wife said she already missed Salzburg.

Exploring small narrow streets, many little stores, famous houses to hear their history, bakeries, original shops, castle views, river views. Everything is very easy to walk around, and can stop in many cafes or restaurant or benches. It is a great town, perfect for exploring.

We briefly visited Salzburg in 2019 and dearly wanted to return for a longer visit. However, while we are fully vaccinated, due to the muddling around by the EU with vaccines we are now making plans to visit UK. Such a pity...

Magical, like a fairy tale city!
Walk around and look up, not all time down to the road. The history of the city is also in the buildings, the signs, the architecture, symbology,... it is magical... like walking there 300 years ago...

We spent over four hours walking around the Aldestadt old town using the Rick Steve’s Vienna guidebook which has a very good self guided walk of Salzburg also taking in some ‘off the beaten track’ places. We have been to many European cities but this counts as one of the best. Most of the area is pedestrian only, making walking a pleasure. It is quite ‘up and down’ as you might expect of a city sandwiched between mountains and the river in close proximity but some of the views are spectacular from up on high. The Baroque architecture is on a grand scale but unlike many ‘old town’ areas they have combined old building with a good selection of retail shops giving the centre a vibrant atmosphere. The old town centre mainly consists of a series in inter linking squares and is surprisingly compact.
We were in Salzburg between 29th December and 1st January. An added bonus was the Christmas markets were still operating up to New Years day (we had expected them to be mainly finished) and combined with additional festivities over the New Year period, the whole area was buzzing with life.
Quite a memorable visit.

The thing you come to Salzburg to see is the amazing Baroque city with Cathedral, churches, Fortress and street shopping. There are few places in the world where you can feel that you were back in the 17th and 18th Century and Salzburg is it. You almost expect to see Mozart. My favorite things in Salzburg were the Residenze (DomQuartier) and Fortress. Both are in the Old Town and both are Must Sees. We were lucky enough to stay in the Altstadt at Am Dom which is perfect because it is small enough to walk the entire area in one day.

I am keen on the old central Eurpean cafes/coffee houses and wonder which the best are in Salzburg. Thanks.

If you want to visit an authentic, not so touristy Salzburg Café, try Café Wernbacher. This is where Salzburger are hanging out. In the same street there is Fingerlos. They have the best cakes, but it is not that comfortable to hang out for a longer time. Nevertheless I would recommend it for the "real" experience. I should know, as I'm from Salzburg :) We actually avoid Fürst and other Cafés in the old town, because they all are tourist traps. The service is mostly bad there.

There is an excellent, modern car parking right underneath the Altstadt. It's spacious, light and airy and feels safe. Parking spots are wide and with enough space around it.
You take the elevator and you are at 100m from the carfree old town.
It doesn't come cheap but if it's just for a day's visit I think the price is absolutely worth the convenience.

Hi
Hope you can help! We plan to make a short stop to Salzburg after visiting Vienna and before visiting Munich. Comparing the Hellbrunn Castle ver the Fortress Hohensalzburg, which one is the one that we should not miss? I’m not sure that we can fit them both in the trip.
Thanks for any input.

Aloha, we looked at the going to the Castle, but it was away from old town with its cathedral, cemetery, and other sights. So we stayed, took to the tram to the top of the Fortress, ate, enjoyed the wonderful view of Salzburg, and had a marvelous time. But if we were staying longer, the Castle would have been next on our agenda. It was further away from old town, but you can take the city bus to get around, too. Aloha

What time are most shops here open and close? Is it a good idea to go at night (after 6:00?)
Thanks!
Written 14 August 2018
Shops close at normal European times, and close at 5pm, 6pm at the most. There's no siesta here like in the South of Europe (like Spain) where shops close between 2 and 6pm and open again untill 9 or 10pm.
Only restaurants are open later, but even they usually close their kitchen at 10pm (except for maybe pizzeria's), so if you get in late they may not be able to serve you even though earlier customers have not recieved their meal yet.

Hi, We are travelling to Austria over December, planning to visit Salzburg - are there any attractions that we should avoid during winter, that are perhaps closed due to winter weather? Or any recommendations for a must do during snowy days?
Any tips will be apprecaited

I have not been to Austria in the winter, but for a great venue for a few hours, especially if you are travelling with children, the Haus der Natur is well worth it. Incorporates a little aquarium, reptile section, fantastic hands-on Science exhibits and more. Worth considering the Salzburg Card, which covers your transport and gives free admission to many worthwhile attractions. Left Salzburg 2 days ago-already missing it!
