Great family day out to escape the city heat. Outdoor swimming, kids pool, lap pool, flume…

Wee bit of a walk from the nearest Ubahn station but all through a nice park so didn’t feel like a chore.

most stupid rule ever I seen in bathing area: you can’t use diving goggles, only swimming ones 🤬
and the guard argument is: because it is written in rules. I mean, SERIOUSLY? Then he started talk about broken glass and so, but did you ever seen broken goggles into pieces? I didn’t. I think you have to smash them super hard to acchieve that

such a nice spot it may have been

We visited Gansehaufel while in Vienna in August and loved it so much we returned again before we left the city. And we would definitely return! We went in summer, and it was around 30 degrees, absolutely perfect. Having first gone on a Sunday, we knew it would be crowded, but my wife and I headed straight to the FKK area and it was much quieter. Lots of people, but quiet and respectful. It was really loud (lots of kids) in the main area of the island, so we definitely recommend going with the FKK area (no clothes allowed – no tan lines, yay!) People are friendly, though we of course kept our distance with COVID.

The water was lovely, there are facilities, a restaurant, ice cream bar – no clothes needed for any of them. Couldn’t be more convenient! Hardly anyone apart from us wore masks, but social distancing is pretty easy. Though masks should be required for the washrooms and restaurants – we fell. It was much less busy when we returned on Friday.

There is a free shuttle service to/from the nearby U-Bahn station (Kaisermühlen-Vic), but it seems to only operate on weekends. It was operating on the Sunday when we went, but not on the Friday when we returned.

Highly recommend a visit, especially for the non-prudish! Loooove that Vienna has this oasis right in the middle of the city. I wish all cities did, body positivity and equality should be encouraged!

We were only in Vienna for a week but enjoyed this place so much that we ended up visiting twice!

Absolutely superb facilities. It's a lush green oasis on an old island in the Danube. You travel on the Underground to Kaisermuhlen (Vienna International Centre) then get a free courtesy bus to the resort (or you can walk if you're feeling energetic). Make sure you get off at the right side of the underground station or you'll miss the bus stop (it's not marked. We ended up getting a taxi the first time). Look for where the taxi rank is, where the buses come in then turn round.

On arrival you pay one fee to get in (cash only) - for us as a family of four it was just 14 euros. Once inside there are an array of different pools, or you can swim in the Danube itself, or you can even head to a discreet fenced off nudist area.

The first pool you come to is a superb wave pool - absolutely huge. Water is quite chilly but exactly what we needed as the temp outside was 35 degrees. The wave machine comes on every half an hour. It's mostly shallow but does get deep at the end where you can jump in. Lifeguards everywhere, very safe for families.

Then there are two metal-bottomed infinity pools (the metal conducts heat so they're slightly warmer). One is more for kids and has a cool slide.

There's also another kids pool with water spraying everywhere, plus a tiny tots pool.

Down at the river there are clearly marked areas for swimming plus a small pier with ladders etc for ease of access. Water lovely and warm.

Several cafes on site (these do take cards) including one of the ubiquitous "Strock" kiosks that are very reasonable.

There is also beach volleyball, trampolining, mini golf...etc etc. Loads of shade to sit in, a lovely relaxed vibe.

This isn't a tacky tourist venue, it's much loved by the locals so don't expect menus in English etc although most staff are pretty fluent and very helpful.

Honestly one of the best things we did in Vienna, amazing fun for the family. It opens at 10 so get there early and beat the crowds. Most people seemed to wait until the searing heat of the afternoon and it did get busy (although not uncomfortably so).

Very highly recommended. Our kids had a truly brilliant time.

Absolutely fantastic. Very cheap and well connected by public transport. Food inside is not too pricey and is quite nice. You must try the Langos fried dough dish! Amazing! You can also enjoy your own picnic.

Very safe for small children / non swimmers. There are families of ducks with ducklings swimming along.... sooooo cute!

The area beyond the safety zone is amazing for swimmers. It's amazing to think you are actually swimming in the Danube!

Water is warm and extremely clean.

Changing facilities are nice although we didn't used. The old trick of a towel around your bum will do :)

Plenty of shade / sun to choose your favourite area. We loved so much we came back!

The free shuttle is a plus.

A ireland on the old Donau. It's the perfect spot to swim. If you go after 4pm it's only 3€50. There's two parts: the bigger one with swimming pools and beach, lots of families. And the second one is for naked people (FKK), it is much nicer. Very quiet and safe. Showers, toilets, snacks. It's very clean and you can swim in a very clean water. One of my favorite spot in the summer.

We were in Vienna from July 25 to July 30, 2018. We spent a day at Strandbad Gansehaufel and it might of been the best day in Vienna!
Strandbad Gansehaufel is an island in the middle of the Old Danube River that is one large park. It costs about $7 a person (for adults) and once you are in you have access to the pools, the park, and the grounds. There were a lot of people there but at the same time it didn't feel crowded.
They have food stands all over the place selling hot food, sodas, beer, and snacks. It is a great place for families and kids and there were a lot of them!
The southeast area is a FKK Naturist resort that is fenced off so it is private with the entrance that faces the pools toward the south end.
What makes the island such a pleasure is the relaxed atmosphere. It is a great place to get away from everything and relax. There are tons of trees so that you can find shade everywhere.
The pools are wonderful! The water seemed so clean and natural without any chemical taste to it - we loved it! The guards take their job very seriously. I happened to jump in the pool not realizing that I jumped in an area where people were swimming laps. Even though there was no one around they blew the whistle at me and made me aware of my error. The guards never sit and are actively looking for a reason to blow their whistle. They aren't harsh and don't give you a hard time - they just keep law and order.
All in all I would say this is a must go place above all others!
If you have kids you need to go now....right now! You and your kids will be happier for it!

Had a great time sunbathing, swimming, and people watching. It’s a VERY busy park, but there is plenty of space to layout and relax. The nude area is on the southeast corner of the island, and it is barricaded with 8 foot bamboo walls. The Alte Danube is clean, but folks it’s not sparkling clean. Plenty of food vending and the swimming pools are very refreshing on a hot summer day. Kid friendly by all means, and we adults have our own swimming pool. Changing rooms are, as stated in a previous post, akin to the 1950s. They are well maintained and very clean. It costs 5.90€ per adult for the day. Totally worth it when you’ve seen all the old buildings you can stand to see in lovely Vienna. Bring a book, swimsuit and suntan lotion. We felt it was just as good to see the Viennese and their joie de vivre than historic locations on our tour of the city.

It feels like a trip back to the 1920s or 1950s: wide meadows, quiet, peaceful (at least on a monday afternoon) and oldfashioned changing facilities (separate two-storey buildings with wooden doors, benches and cubicles), small shops with ice cream, cakes and sausages, several pools, also playing areas for children. And also a nudist area (separated from the rest).
And you can swim in the "Alte Donau" (and in the pools), together with SUP and canoe.
The location is great, about 15 min by foot from the Vienna International Centre/Kaisermühlen, and there is also a complimentary bus directly from the metro stop Kaisermühlen.

A great place to spend the weekend in Vienna. Very quiet, never gets crowded. You can swim either in Danube or in the huge swimming pool. Not to be missed!
