A large, monumental piece of 1920s brutalism commemorating Karl Lueger, Mayor of Vienna.
Lueger is controversial by any standards, and despite the fact that his administration transformed Vienna, his standout, unrelenting antisemitism must not be forgotten. Visitors coming across this statue without any background will think "what a great man he must have been", whereas he was in fact pretty ghastly.
His antisemitism served as a model for Hitler among others, but all you can find is a tiny (and I mean VERY SMALL) explanatory plaque at the back of this huge monument. It simply is not enough.
I'm not the type to rip down historical monuments, but context is everything, and this ghastly monument to a ghastly man needs much more context, much more prominently displayed.

Once upon a time there was a lot of stuff dedicated to Karl Luger in Vienna. However, the toponyms were gradually removed, the last street was renamed after Luger. Only the monument erected in 1926 remains. And even he is blinded by the inscriptions "Shame!" Why such a reaction of some of the inhabitants of Vienna? Luger was the mayor of Vienna at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries and became famous for his anti-Semitism. Luger stood out even against the background of Vienna, accustomed to anti-Semitism. So strong that Emperor Franz Joseph did not approve him in the rank of mayor and only through the veto of the City Council Luger became mayor. The founder of the Third Reich will speak approvingly of him in his magnum opus as his ideological inspirer. Therefore, the residents of Vienna write on the pedestal "Shame!"

The monument was erected in 1926 but it is clear that he was a controversial politician and was mayor of vienna from 1897 to 1910 and did transform vienna but his antisemitism and racist views question if a monument like this is just as you can see on the grafiti (shame)

If you can't learn from history then the same mistakes will be made in the future ,this certainly applies to the statue dedicated and in honour of Karl Lueger .
The Karl Lueger Monument is a controversial monument dedicated to Karl Lueger who was mayor of Vienna from 1897-1910 ,this man was also the founder of the Christian Social Party ,a notorious anti Semitic who none other than Adolf Hitler considered to be one of the greatest " German mayors of all time" .
It's a controversial statue and monument ,it's one of the largest monuments in Vienna ,it depicts Lueger staring into the void almost as if he's addressing a crowd ,during his tenor as mayor he achieved many great things which are etched on reliefs around the monument such as municipalisation of gas and electrical supplies ,preservation of the forests around the city,entitlements for widows and orphans and charity housing for the destitute but you still can't get away from his anti Semitic views ,the monument is constantly defaced with the word " schande " which means shame ,people have called for the removal of the statue ,I disagree ,I believe this statue should stand as it is with the graffiti still visible to remind people of this mans abhorrent views ,if you're in the area it's a statue to most definitely check out and it's easy to locate along Karl Lueger Platz.

Should this man be celebrated with a statue in Vienna? Visit the Jewish Museum and learn about Karl Lueger from a different perspective.

Karl Lueger Monument is a striking statue to Austrian politician Karl Lueger ( 1844 _ 1910 ) ,Mayor of Vienna and leader and one of the founders of the Christian Social Party.
Credited with transforming Vienna into a vibrant and modern city ,the antisemitic nature of the Christian Social Party are viewed as a template for Adolf Hitler's Nazism.
The statue looks really good ,it shows Karl Lueger in dramatic pose surrounded by four well detailed figures ,the statue makes for some great photographic opportunities, theres an information plaque adjacent to the monument also.
Karl Lueger Monument is easy to locate on Doktor Karl Lueger Platz and is most definitely well worth checking out if your in the area.

Just off Stadtpark at the Doktor Karl Lueger Platz is a large monument to the former and controversial Mayor of the City of Vienna (1897-1910). The monument was designed by Austrian sculptor Josef Müllner (1913-1917). It seems the monument was left unfinished due the outbreak of WWI. It was then finished in 1926 and erected at its present location.
The monument is a bronze life-size image of Luegar, coated with hands on his chest. He stands upon a Pedestal, surrounded by four male figures representing labour and industry. Below is a large statue base with several relief images related to what appear to be city works around the turn of the 20th century.
There is an information marker on the ground near the statue with a bit of history related to Lueger and this monument. Have a look before viewing in order to provide context in regard to what you are seeing.
