The area
Neighbourhood: Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.

It is a very busy place with lots of upscale shopping as well as cafes, restaurants and lots of activity. St Stephen’s Cathedral is a focal point. Most all the other buildings are the same height and architecture so it was a little disorienting to us but we weren’t there long enough to get acclimated. There were horse and buggy rides, plenty of taxis as well as the subway to get in and out of the area. It seems to be one of the can’t miss places when visiting ViennaVisited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 November 2023
- Georgie TSunbury, United Kingdom412 contributionsFabulous CityOur trip took in the last couple of days in November and the first couple in December. It felt like perfect timing. The city was decorated to the hilt with a Christmas market around very corner it seemed. There were beautiful historic buildings and churches to visit, coffee shops and fabulous cafes to warm up in, and an amazing atmosphere. It's not always well signposted but there's a great free tourist guide that can be picked up at the airport, stations and hotels. Although it's walkable, there's a great Metro service too.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 December 2023

Historically, this area has been the site of human civilisation dating back to early Celtic and Roman settlements. Modern day Austrian which we know today began to take shape and form during the Medieval period while the city saw its peak during the height of the Hapsburg Dynasty when Vienna become leading centres of power, influence and culture in all of Europe and the World. Today the Historic Centre of Vienna is filled with Baroque palaces and churches, streets lined with museums, theatre and opera houses, historic cafes and coffee houses along with a fine collection of city parks. There are monuments, fountains, small squares and charming pedestrian lanes filled with retail and souvenir shopping, historic and modern hotels along with an endless choice of old, chic, fine and new age bars and restaurants. We have spent quite a few holidays in Vienna, usually staying between 4-7 nights. It is truly one of the great capital cities of Europe and excellent holiday destination for anyone who loves history, art, architecture and food.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 December 2023
- Lilia O9 contributionsWhat to visitVienna is charming and a bit old-fashioned. Prepare to dive into beautiful architecture, world of art and sacher cakes. Most landmarks are located in the inner city, except for the Schonbrunn palace. People here like to speak German, not English :) All the food is very tasty, both in restaurants and in the streets. Tip: metro works during the night on the weekends.Visited April 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 28 January 2024

The burggarten area is home to many historical buildings and Mozarts statue, a great place to sit on a sunny day. Walk down from here to St Stephens cathedral and on to Stadepark where you will find statues of Strauss and Schubert.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 April 2024
- Gus WoltmannParis, France48 contributionsA Journey Through Time: Exploring the Historic Center of Vienna with FamilyOur visit to the Historic Center of Vienna was a captivating journey through centuries of rich history, architectural splendor, and cultural heritage. From grand palaces to charming cobblestone streets, every corner of this UNESCO World Heritage site offered a glimpse into Vienna's illustrious past, making it an unforgettable experience for our family. We began our exploration at the iconic Hofburg Palace, the former imperial residence of the Habsburg dynasty. Stepping into its opulent halls and lavish chambers, we were transported back to the grandeur of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, marveling at the intricate details of the architecture and the treasures housed within its walls. Next, we strolled along the elegant Ringstrasse, admiring the magnificent buildings that line this historic boulevard. From the neo-Gothic splendor of the Rathaus (City Hall) to the majestic Vienna State Opera, each structure told a story of Vienna's cultural richness and architectural diversity. As we wandered through the narrow lanes of the Inner Stadt (Inner City), we were charmed by the quaint cafes, bustling market squares, and hidden courtyards that punctuated the cityscape. The sound of horse-drawn carriages clattering over cobblestones added to the timeless atmosphere, evoking a sense of nostalgia for a bygone era. One of the highlights of our visit was exploring St. Stephen's Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture that has stood as a symbol of Vienna for over 700 years. Climbing to the top of its towering spire, we were rewarded with panoramic views of the city, offering a breathtaking perspective of Vienna's beauty and grandeur. Throughout our journey, we were struck by the sense of history that permeates every corner of the Historic Center. From the medieval alleyways of the Judenplatz to the Baroque splendor of the Belvedere Palace, Vienna's rich tapestry of architecture and culture captivated our imaginations and left us in awe of its enduring legacy. As we bid farewell to the Historic Center of Vienna, we carried with us memories of a truly unforgettable experience shared with family. Our journey through this storied city had deepened our appreciation for its heritage and left us longing to return, eager to uncover more of its hidden treasures and timeless wonders.Visited May 2023Travelled with familyWritten 14 April 2024

The old town is elegant. easily walkable, and yes, the pastries and coffee is delicious around the historical area. Walk and drink up the history. - Derry C2 contributionsA weekend in ViennaA beautiful city and May is the right time to visit. We stayed in the centre so we were in easy reach of most attractions. The food in one particular restaurant was outstanding, a Vietnamese restaurant called Miss Saigon which I would strongly recommend. The only downside is Vienna is a bit pricey.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 9 May 2024
- Ben FBloomington, Indiana1,818 contributionsCentral Europe’s HubWhether it’s hopping the cafes and Christmas markets or living through history in the palaces and museums, you can’t go wrong in Vienna, probably the best city in Central Europe (each entitled to their own opinion, of course). I always felt safe and comfortable in this pedestrian-friendly, clean, welcoming place. The city center is larger than your Bruges or Salzburg, but that’s because Vienna really packs a punch for its size. Yet even while feeling sprawling, you still get this small-town charm that is missing in the likes of Lisbon or Amsterdam. I don’t know how to describe it.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 14 May 2024

The best way to tour the old center of Vienna is by horse and carriage which we did starting at the Hofburg and ending at Stephensplatz. We passed by the many beautiful centuries old palaces, churches, spectacular lighted streets and parks as well as world class restaurants and shopping venues all the while listening to joyous Christmas tunes! It doesn't get any better than that!!!Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 June 2024

We did a 2 and a half hour walking tour of historic Vienna and it was worth the early start on a Sunday morning. Our guide Herbert (sourced through Get your Guide) but is available direct also. Would recommend him as he was excellent and helpful on other places or museums to prioritise such as the Imperial Treasury and those which added little to your knowledge if you have visited Schonbrunn palace. This was the silver, imperial rooms and empress Sisi museum in the main Hoffburg Palace. Plenty of history everywhere you walk on this tour which covered Michaelsplatz via square opposite the Albertina museum, a former palace of a Hoffburg daughter and ended in Stephensplatz. Beautiful old town of Vienna we explored on a paid 2 hour walking tour. Unfortunately the weather was pouring rain and with over 70 umbrella clad fellow tourists, it was very difficult to enjoy the experience. My ad ice is to book a tour grouo that has a maximum limit of tourists , say 25, and the experience would be much more personal and enjoyable as there is so much history to learn about this gorgeous city.

We were here to view the city but to also experience the Christmas markets. Neither disappointed us. The Christmas decorations throughout the city were lovely, the crowds that were all out enjoying themselves gave the city a fantastic vibe. The old buildings are lovely and an early morning walk allowed us to see them at their best without the crowds.

Travel should be easier today, than when I was there 30 years ago. I was there during Maifest and radishes were everywhere. But thankfully so were pastries. I visited the Demel coffeehouse and bakery. I only wish I had purchased some pastries to go. I stayed in a hotel that was in a neighborhood in which I felt uneasy. I had not booked a hotel ahead of time, because my dad was ill and my trip uncertain. However, at the time Austria had booking offices along the autobahn. I stopped at one and was able to get a room. I didn't feel comfortable leaving my room at night and I got very hungry by morning. Today, I would book ahead and get travel insurance. I spent one day walking all around Vienna and returned to my room with a lot of black soot on me. When I got home my dad said they probably still used coal for heating. And that was the case then. I still think Vienna is worth a visit.

I am an early walker and I was able to enjoy the historic center throughout the day. There is a different feeling to it early morning, with locals going to open the shops and cafes around. You seat somewhere for coffee, and once you are out it suddenly is buzzing with countless people walking in every direction. The buildings are beautiful and will have you walk with your head up looking at the intricate decorations. I walked 30km in a single day around it going from place to place. One of the more beautiful historic centers in Europe.

Vienna is one of the most beautiful, historically rich and overwhelmingly vibrant cities in the world, certainly in Europe. There are so many things to be seen in all aspects, history, art, architecture, but do take time to walk around instead of using the public transport (although it is very well organized, safe, clean and punctual) all the time. The city is so vibrant, colorful and fresh, it is shame not to feel its street vibes.

Rich, cultural, beautiful area to walk, shop eat/drink & people watch. Vienna finally removed netting that prevents pigeons landing & defecating on statues. They were very unsightly.
Many Euro cities have pigeon problems. They are dirty, unhealthy & spread diseases. I know as I bred elegant show pigeons. They should do what we did in Charlotte 25 years ago. Multiple pairs of peregrine falcons were released among the skyscrapers. No pigeons have been seen downtown for 24 years,

This was our first time in Vienna and we were very impressed. We have been lucky enough to travel extensively but seldom have we been to a place that has so much history and grandeur.
A tip would be to buy one of the 24 or 48 hour travel cards.
These are relatively inexpensive and I like you to just hop on and off the excellent tram, Metro and bus services.
It really does make a great way to explore this city which was much bigger than we expected.
Normally we walk everywhere but that would be a mistake here as you would miss so much.
Everywhere you turn that off the most stunning buildings, many of which are absolutely huge and are spread over an extremely wide area.
In truth, we didn’t find it the warmest city in terms of atmosphere as it is full of government, administrative and Royal buildings. It is absolutely beautiful, we are glad we have seen it but it may be a while before we return as there are other places to see and to return to.

My husband and I visited Vienna last year for a short break and had a wonderful time. There's so much to see and do and I would recommend a trip on one of the many tour buses to take it all in. The city was spotless and full of culture with its many galleries all close at hand. We will definitely visit again to see all the things we didn't have time to do on our short visit.

The historic city center is incredible, you will find yourself amazed by the enormity of the buildings around you and all the history they inhabit.
There are loads of museums, and it is very close to the grand shopping street of Vienna.
Definitely worth a visit. You do not need to use a map to find the specific buildings as they are closer together than they look on the map. I was amazed by the fact that everywhere I turned there was another incredible piece of architecture.

Hotel Avenida. very basic in a tenement block, five minutes from town centre. lovely cafe opposite for breakfast etc, Lovely bed, made up every day, small shower. No electrical items are allowed because of the building being on a very old system. There is a sofa and a small shower cubicle. We were very comfortable and would stay again, 220 euros for 3 night for both of us.

Здравствуйте! Подскажите , можно ли купить в аэропорте билет на 72 часа . Если да, то где продают? И действителен ли этот билет для проезда на поезде до центра Вены?
Written 20 October 2019

Written 7 October 2019
