About
The Spanish Riding School in Vienna is the only institution in the world which has practiced for more than 450 years and continues to cultivate classical equitation in the Renaissance tradition of the Haute Ecole - which can also be found on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity. The performances of the horses trained by this famous equestrian school amazed audiences from all over the world.

Neighbourhood: Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.

- Daydream359416191503 contributionsExpected more from a show.I had looked forward to visiting the Spanish Riding School for about 50 years, so the first event I attended was the training session which was very disappointing. I then did a guided tour which very interesting and I realised that the guided tour is sufficient to see the arena and see the horses, you won't see them ridden though. In the training session you saw them ridden but it was quite boring. So I decided I wanted to go to a show, so I put in a mighty effort to get back to Vienna on a Saturday just so I could see the show. I was hoping to see some of the jumps with the riders on their backs that they are most famous for and still I did not see that. I am now unsure what you need to go and see to actually experience the horses perform in the way that the Riding School is portrayed. There were a few jumps at the show I was at, but the horses were on a long rein.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 4 October 2023
- MarkMelbourne, Australia8 contributionsUnforgettable LippizanersThe main show of the Spanish Riding School is an incredible experience. It helps to know a little about horses and specifically about dressage. Tremendous collaboration between rider and horse, plus the team. Well worth it.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 February 2024

Martin was informative and always willing to answer any questions. Would definitely recommend bothVisited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 17 March 2024
- Richard LSouthampton, United Kingdom171 contributionsA must do for ViennaWe booked well in advance and thought the 65€ a ticket would afford us a good seat. We were on the 2nd level and you could only see one side of the arena - you really needed to be at the ends to get a full view. Saying this the performers used both sides to demonstrate their skill. For a horse lover I would thoroughly recommend this. It lasted an hour and was very well done. You are not allowed to take any photos and the staff there will stop you. However if you are canny you can get the odd one or two !!Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 March 2024
- Sylvana123Preston, United Kingdom1,070 contributionsA lovely performance which we all enjoyed - €35 standing seats well worth it!Whilst in Vienna I knew I had to see the Lipizzaner stallions at the Spanish Riding School. Had it just been hubby and myself I would have probably bought the best seats in the house, but as we were with friends we decided on the €35 standing tickets. We were not disappointed. Yes, your view is restricted at times but so are the seats you are stood behind. The only people with unrestricted view are the ones with tickets at either end. To access the auditorium you enter by the door in the wall opposite the stables. There are some quite steep steps to climb too. Once inside we headed towards the middle and took our place behind some seats. The building is fabulous, with huge chandeliers and lots of white marble. The performance itself was nice and I’m so glad I got to see the Lippizaners in Vienna. It is a classical concert though and so do not expect these horses to be doing lots of jumps and tricks. It is all about the horsemanship and the control of the horses. I really enjoyed it and so did my hubby and our friends!Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 18 April 2024
- SuperMom48Norwalk, Connecticut317 contributionsGuided tour was good (did not go to performance)I am a huge horse fan and we were considering going to a performance or training session and then I read the reviews - pretty awful. So we decide to do the guided tour instead - thought that was very interesting and learned about the horses and training. Not sure worth the cost if a non-horse person, but overall our group enjoyed it. You were able to see the horses up close in stables (but no pictures allowed in the stables but were allowed outside ) and the tack room and the riding arena.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 May 2024
- BacardiMan66Marple, United Kingdom477 contributionsExpensive, but worth it, justHaving read reviews, we bought the €180 tickets. Front row, amazing view. Very impressive to see horse and rider work so closely together. I really didn't know what to expect as I am not a horse lover ( see below), but I thoroughly enjoyed what I saw. Sadly, I had to leave after about 40mins as I have animal dust allergy, but wife stayed and came out beaming. Was it worth the money, probably, its your choice how you spend it.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 May 2024
- tripleh8298Brooklyn Park, Minnesota68 contributionsStunning show, not quite what I expectedI have wanted to see the Stallions since I was a little girl in the 70s! The arena, history and pageantry is spectacular. I don't know if times have changed but the show was heavy on the dressage (which was amazing) with very little "tricks" or jumps. Tickets were very expensive compared to other attractions but if you love horses, it is a very special experience.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 May 2024
- Voyager212245 contributionsStables tour: v enjoyable even though no interest in horsesI have never ridden a horse, and can just about tell one end from the other. Contrary to what some other reviewers say, I didnt need to have any prior interest in horses to enjoy this 1 hour tour of the arenas (including the main indoor grand baroque arena) and stables. Went in July when 80% of the horses are having a summer break in the country, but even then there were still plenty of horses around to look at. You won’t see any performance etc but our guides were clear, educational and entertaining. At €23 for adult ticket quite expensive but we enjoyed ourselves.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 July 2024
- SspTravelColumbus, Ohio127 contributionsSpanish Riding School - Lipizzaner Special PerformanceWe chose to attend the shorter Lipizzaner Special performance during our quick trip to Vienna and it was the perfect amount of time. We sat in the upper gallery at the end and it was perfect for getting a great view of the horses and their riders. The horses and the show are a unique experience in a beautiful setting. This is the shorter program at about 45-50 minutes and was perfect to allow us to maximize our day.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 August 2024

In all the attractions we visited, this has to be one of the best. We decided long ago when we wanted to come to Vienna that the Spanish Riding school had to be on our bucket list and so pleased it was. We took the guided tour which was worth every penny. Only lasts one hour but our guide made sure we did not miss anything at all. You are greeted in the main foyer by your tour guide and there are two language tours (German & English) so make sure you chose the right one. You are taken around the whole arena, the tack rooms, the stables and the main court yard. Photography is allowed but not in the stables and be prepared to be removed from the tour if you defy the guide and try and get a sneaky picture in the stables. You are taken right up close to the magnificent horses but not within touching distance and you cannot imagine how graceful they are until you are standing beside them. As I said earlier and having seen most of the attractions, this has to be one of the best. They have practice sessions in the arena also where the general public can go and watch but a piece of advice, if you are going, then go early as it can get very busy. They have a lovely gift shop for your souveniers and a lovely café on site as well.

We bought tickets in the front row on the side where the Emperor used to sit in the old times. You have to do it well in advance. Horses are on vacation for 2 summer months in the mountains. Sometimes they travel abroad. So check beforehand when they are in their residence.
Tickets were expensive. You can buy cheaper tickets on the other sides of the arena or even standing places.
The performance (dressage) is absolutely stunning work of both horses and riders.
You can’t take photos during the performance.

If you love horses, this is the place to go. We went to see the early morning training sessions. They run every half an hour, but you can attend all four of these. They exercise and train around 6 different horses on average, every half hour. You have to remember these are part of their training sessions, not a display as such. But they give you a taster of how they train these wonderful creatures.
We stayed for the whole two hours as we were totally mesmerised.
I would suggest getting there from the start, as the seats fill up quite quickly (first come first served).
We also attended the tour in the afternoon. This lasted about an hour. It was very insightful and our guide was amazing. She answered everyones questions and you could tell she loves what she does.
Some people think this is expensive, but compared to other activities in Vienna I think it is good value for money.
Also remember if you visit in the summer the riders and most of all the horses will be enjoying the well earned vacations.

My wife and I had booked tickets for a performance at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. We paid and received our e-tickets. I booked airfare and a hotel in Vienna, so we could see the performance on a Sunday. A few days ago I received an email saying that the performance had been cancelled! We cannot change our hotel or airline tickets, so now we are stuck with three nights in Vienna and no performance on the dates we are there! Terrible service! No apologies and no offers to help us out in any way! I wrote to them and have still not received a reply and the money hasn't yet been refunded! Don't book in advance and don't book a trip to Vienna if your purpose is to see the show! I would never have booked a weekend trip otherwise as Vienna is dead on Sundays as shops are closed.

We booked tickets to the Classic show on a Sunday at 11am.
We arrived to collect our tickets (note : if you buy a voucher online you have to exchange for proper ticket at box office 45 mins prior to show) then headed around to wait for the doors to open.
Queue already started around 9:45 (doors open at 10:30) as standing is unreserved.
There is tiered standing around both sides of the viewing area but this fills up immediately - other standing is behind the seated guests in the aisles.
An excellent show with good descriptions / explanations from a member of staff. The horses were beautiful and the riders very skilled.
The show lasts around one hour.
No photography or videography during the show, but you are allowed to take pictures before and after.

We went to the morning exercises first, because it's been a while since we visited. There are still some Covid precautions in place - seating is more spaced out and we were requested to wear face masks. For those who think it's too much of an imposition, please remember that horses can catch respiratory viruses too.
The last time it was rather a tree for all with people standing and trying to push to the front, but this time we could actually book places in the seated area and it was much more civilised. There were two distinct parts of the training, one featuring fully trained stallions, and the second with younger horses who were still learning their craft and building up the necessary muscles. I found the commentary interesting and educational, pointing out that the training builds on the natural movements of the stallions, and that they all get on because they've grown up together as a herd (plus there are no mares around to stir up trouble!).
Much as I really enjoy the performances, I also love to see how the stallions are trained - with plenty of praise and treats when they've done particularly well or tried hard. Everything is done at pace dictated by the horses, with no pressure on them.
In the afternoon we took the guided tour of the stables, which was educational in a different way. Relaxed horses in nice loose boxes, busily enjoying being horses. They all have their own feeding regime, depending on their needs, and I had to chuckle when the lady explained that some weren't standing on the preferred straw bedding because they keep eating it! Clean and tidy stables, and a tack room that has to be seen to be believed.
All in all a very pleasant way to spend the day.

My friends and I intended to just watch the morning exercises but we were told the exercises were cancelled to make way for a gala show. There and then we decided to pay the 39 Euro for the standing room only. We were worried but still took on the challenge and it was well worth it! The show was something different and well worth standing to watch the 60 minute show. The horses were so beautiful and well trained. If your schedule will allow we strongly suggest you include this in your itinerary. It's a pity we could not take pictures of the horses.

Beautiful horses and lovely venue at the Hofburg. The VORFÜHRUNG weekend show I saw included only four horses, not the 16 shown on the brochure. I should have bought one of the cheaper tickets on the side where the horses could be seen going through their paces just as well as where I sat in the center elevated seat at the front (where I paid for the highest price ticket). When the show ended everyone just sat there waiting for the big production that never came. Finally we realized it was over and everyone quietly filed out.

Booked to see the Classic Show - really disappointed. Bought top seats at €125 each, the show lasted an hour. Part 1 six young stallions who only trotted and cantered around the arena. Part 2 long rein training, rider walked very close to back of horse controlling it’s movements. Part 3 more mature stallions showing their jumping tricks - jump up and kick legs back, lean back on hind legs and raise front legs. Part 4 two mares trotted around arena in sync. Finale the two mares trotted around arena followed by two stallions pulling a carriage.
Understand parts 1 to 4 showing development of training. The finale was a total let down expected finished article.
A very poor show, expecting far more, have seen much more artistry in local dressage events.
Feel like this is a total rip off.

Unfortunately, I was unable to see the training as my flight arrived too late. I had spoken to others (while waiting for the tour) who had seen the show and every one of them said it was awesome! Most even said they would see it again. The rest said they were there to see it again. If you can't afford expensive tickets, don't worry. There really isn't a bad seat in the house. We got to get up close to the horses but no touching! Any horse person can tell you this is for the health and safety of the horses. Going to the little shop there is definitely worth it as they have things at all price ranges. Also, there is a little shop you will pass as you are walking out to the street from the tour. It says Coffee and Shopping which is worth checking out. He has some beautiful and interesting jewelry. I don't think you can walk out of there without a little something. Say hi to his adorable pug named Gigi.

If you do the guided tour, do you get to see any of the horses in action? Or is it only information behind the scenes?
Written 6 April 2023
I went to a show, not guided tour. Training session is where you see horses in action definitely. You may be lucky enough to see training behind the scenes but rare. The tour shows the stables, tack rooms, various performance arenas, how to get from stable to performance arena. I ams sure it will be worthwhile.

Hi, what would you like to know about this attraction? where abouts is the best place to sit? or is the standing area just a good?
Written 6 February 2020
Standing or sitting, anything by the railings is good. The horses go around the riding arena so everyone can see them. But if you are further back you can see them as well when they are up by the walls
