I have a fun exploring this museum. It was one that I wasn’t sure that I was going to go even with its high ratings. But it was a lot of fun to walk the ancient Egyptian exhibit and see all of the sarcophagus and the little green hippo, was adorable. All of the different sculptures were beautiful and then you go to the next floor and you get to see a bunch of famous artworks, which were just as stunning, so I was very happy that I ended up taking the time to go to this museum it was well worth it.

Once you get in with the audio tour guide in hand (takes a few minutes) you enter a climate controlled atmosphere with some of the greatest treasures of the western world. It’s a little clunky getting to that point but worth it. Amazing collection without obnoxious crowds to encumber the experience (we visited mid Sept). We have encountered that at other prestigious museums who shall remain nameless. Lockers for backpacks, etc, available with a 1 euro deposit. Gift shop personnel helpful and selection was good. Worth the $20/head (approx) for full fare adults.

Just stunning collection of superb quality artifacts across the centuries. The pottery, metal work, cameos and so much more, and the volume of them, were beyond anything I’ve seen in 60 years of visiting museums around the world. We spent a morning but you could spend a life time and not do full justice to the collection. It facile but , WOW!

From the moment you walk in and see that staircase, you know that you are in for a true experience. I came to look at specific pieces so I was single-minded in my approach. Once I had seen them, I could then take the time to see it all. It is a place that you cannot rush!! Shout yourself some Kaffee und Kuchen in their wonderful cafe- it is a work of art in itself.

Like most things connected with the Hapsburgs the Kunsthistorisches Museum is on a massive scale and you need to be selective in what you want to see. It faces the equally huge and architecturally identical Natural History museum across a grassy piazza so make sure you choose the right one, we almost didn’t but the small sculpture of an elephant outside gives a clue to that being the natural history one. Inside you are faced with the usual ornate columns, richly decorated plasterwork, domes etc. Initially we thought photography, as elsewhere in some of the places we visited, was banned but then we realised it was tolerated so long as no flash was used. We got a bit bogged down on level 0.5 - room after room of ceramics and gold and silver objects before realising the paintings are actually on level 1. It’s a huge collection and trying to see it all would induce fatigue but helpfully a free printed guide is provided which indicates the most notable paintings in each section. Captions in German and English, on a plinth running round the rooms which is a good idea as it also stops you from getting too close to the artwork. Large Titian and Bruegel collections and also some good Canalettos and Caravaggios, but ifyou’re interested in English painters it’s probably not for you as there’s very little, it’s mainly Dutch, Italian etc and an awful lot of it religious art as you might expect.

The Kunsthistorishes Art Museum has a large collection of the great masters - including Rembrandt, Raphael, Holbein, Vermeer, Brueghel & others. It is very impressive. Leave enough time to take it all in.

Instead of the music attractions, this was definitely worth spending my day in! Amazing museum with paintings and also other collections around the world. Currently portraying a lot of Dutch and Italian painters. 4 hours and didn’t see everything

Attended the 'Kunstschatzi' which is once a month evening event with a DJ and cocktails in the Cupola Hall. In October the evening was named Sinners and Saints, but theme changes each month. The DJ was playing banging house, and the cocktails were excellent. We then wandered around the museum a little bit drunk. There were also frequent free guided tours. An interesting experience which seemed to appeal to the Viennese of all ages. Bought tickets in advance but I saw there is a ticket office outside selling on the night.

From the moment I walked in the door I knew I would not have nearly enough time to see everything I wanted to. The building itself is a gem and can easily distract you from the exhibits. There was a respectful hush throughout the building and I loved the sofas that were arranged so you could just sit and drink in the magnificence of the masterpiece paintings lining the walls. An easy walk from a subway stop it has a café and a gift shop filled with items that reflect what was on display throughout the museum. Well worth the entrance fee, but budget lots of time!

It would have been wonderful to see the Christmas Market during the night, but due to the weather, it was rainy, wet, and damp, and it was not conducive for health reasons. We came home with some cough and colds and laryngitis, but it's worth seeing the palaces and its history. We plan to go back during the dry season and explore more by going to other places nearby.
