In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.

Question--- How do we plan in advance, as has been recommended, to attend Friday nite Shabbat services?? I understand we need ID but do we have to ask days in advance? We will be going in September.

I contacted the Stadttempel as I was going to be traveling during Yom Kippur and wanted to still attend services during my travels. I contacted the Synagogue weeks before the High Holidays to ask if it's ok I attend Yom Kippur services. The kind lady me back and said I may attend. She said to send copies of my passport and my mothers (as she was coming with me). I sent the copies and she kindly sent me tickets to Yom Kippur services. I arrived at the temple for services and the blonde haired security guy asked for our passports, asked what state we're from, and then said only community members can attend. I showed him the tickets, but he says he doesn't care. That the lady who sent me the tickets made a mistake and only community members can attend. I offered to show him the email communications, which also included someone else from the temple. Obviously multiple persons at the temple had to have approved us to get tickets. He just coldly kept repeating himself that he doesn't care what I show him or who I've spoken with and I can not attend. My stomach was upside down as had I known ahead of time I would have inquired to another temple. But now it was too late to attend services elsewhere. Unreal for a securty guy [who is not Jewish] to deny a Jew to pray on the holiest day of the year, especially when I had prior approval. My heart is broken.

First of all, the tour guide, Mally Shaked led us into the synagogue, but problems started when she realized that the visitors speak Hebrew, German and English. She switched languages in between and I (fluent in all three languages) felt that she did not live up to each of her translations. Moreover, the English speaking part was heavily neglected and in between the visitors had to wait for minutes. She did say very few things about the building itself, which was a pity, but was very strong in expressing her political opinion about Austria, being such a sh+ty country, and Germany. Moreover, she has poor knowledge of Austrian politics but loved to rant about everything Austrian. She has no understanding of foreign politics and is hardly tolerant as she expressed some pretty islamophobic views. That tour was a disaster. Instead of showing and promoting Jewish culture and the architectural aspects of the building, she could not stop herself from complaining about the hardship of being a Jew. She feels threatened all the time and clearly stated that Muslims will be taking over the world. Ridiculous.

Ok... this Synogogue is guarded like Fort Knox... nobody is just walking on in and getting entry here. I learned this the HARD way. I simply had NO IDEA how difficult it would be even with an email alerting the synagogue of my visit a few hours before my arrival. This is a tightly secured place... don't plan on an impromptu visit and expect to get allowed in!! Ok... my story about how I got in involved a holy miracle .that involved a plain clothed handsome security guard and a Beautiful woman named Molly. The security guard asked me, " why are you so persistent on trying to get in here when every single person at this synogogue has told you, "NO!!" I told him that I was from the US and my maternal grandparents had been married at this synogogue in 1936 and I've heard about their wedding at this synogogue since I was a child and that I didn't know if I was ever returning to Vienna, however, it was my goal to FINALLY see where they were married. My grandparents survived the Holocaust and I was returning to their home city to finally see where they were from. He looked at me while I was standing there with tears coming out of my eyes and he said, " Ok... I'm going to escort you in and let you see this. " He not only did that, he got Molly to explain some of the incredible history of this synogogue to my husband and I. It was truly one of the most meaningful and Beautiful experiences of my life and I will always be grateful to the kindness of that security guard and this Beautiful woman, named Molly .that gave my husband and I a detailed description of the history of this synogogue. I will never forget them, I will never forget their kindness and I will never forget the overwhelming emotion I experienced being in the synagogue where my grandparents were married. It was the most surreal experience for me and I'll always be grateful to both of them for granting this to me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Wonderful experience. There was a choir and cantor, but nothing heavy or time consuming. Services 'warm up' at 9 AM. At the conclusion, a children's choir joined the cantor. The interior takes you back to a different era. Some extraordinary personalities led or were members of this congregation. There were pleasant refreshments (Kiddush) after the services.

This is the only remaining synagogue in Vienna. It is in the Judengasse. Make sure to take the tour. The story behind this synagogue is fascinating. Book the tour in advance.

We had contacted the synagogue before leaving home with the aim of visiting it, but it was not open during the time of our visit. However we were informed that they were arranging an Open Day on the Sunday that we were in Vienna. It was a fabulous day. Although it was all in German, I got a translation from a young man .The choir of 50 and the chazan were wonderful as is the interior design. There is much inter-community work to reach out to the non-Jewish population and many local and national dignitaries were present.

There are two tours 11 and 2:00, be sure to bring ID. The guide was wonderful full of stories happy and sad. The synagogue is beautiful and was a true miracle it survived.

This was a must-see during a work trip to Wien for a conference. Be advised you need photo ID and € 8 cash to get in at the entrance to the left of the actual synagogue. The history is fascinating and the reconstructed shul is beautiful (only two lights and the metal plates on the ark are original; everything else was destroyed).

But I left a bit early because of the deeply offensive and racist diatribe by the guide. Imagine if you toured a church in the US and the guide went off for a long time about how wonderful Trump is, how Mexicans contribute nothing to countries and they shouldn’t be here, etc. That just gives a broad idea of the deeply offensive and factually incorrect lecture we all had to hear from the guide. A shame, because it totally marred what otherwise would have been a highlight of my trip. Now I’m just nauseous.

My wife and I went to the tour on a Monday afternoon not knowing what to expect. What we experienced was a most informative and interesting talk in a beautiful sanctuary by a woman whose knowledge and enthusiasm for the synagogue and the history of Vienna Jewish made the Viennese Jewry come alive. The talk was about an hour but both of us could have continued listening to her for much, much longer. While we enjoyed our stay in Vienna very much, this was the highlight of our visit.
