Neighbourhood: Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.

On the new market square which is in the middle of a mayor construction who can find this small church but in its vaults lies the burial place of the habsburg dynasty, with over 150 mortal remains. The church was constructed in 1632. the vaults where not open when we visted it but they are worth seeing.

Located in one corner of the Neuer Markt, the small church with a gabled roof is rather simple. However, its claim to fame is what lies in its vaults which is the burial place of the Habsburg dynasty. The crypt contains the mortal remains of almost 150 Habsburg Emperors, Empresses, Princes, Princesses, Crown Princes and other prominent Habsburg personalities from the seventeenth century onwards.

The corpses are entombed in beautiful sarcophagi and placed in several vaults - the most beautiful and ornate being the double sarcophagus of Empress Maria Theresa and her husband.

We visited the Capuchin Church to do a tour of the crypts. This very ordinary looking church from the outside hides what lies below. It was amazing to find that this is the burial place of the Habsburg family, including Sisi and her husband Franz Joseph and Empress Marie Theresa. We certainly did not expect to see this and the intricate patterns on the tombs were works of art in themselves. There are 149 Habsburg’s, including 12 emperors and 19 empresses and queens laid to rest here.

Toured the crypt of the Habsburgs. Great find and well worth 1 hour. Website is excellent to use as a guide through all the people in the crypt.

The Capuchin Church ( Kapuzinerkirche ) was a beautiful evocative looking church my twin brother Stephen and I chanced upon as we were wandering around the Old Town streets and what a great find.
Located on Neuer Markt Square and run by the Order Of Friars Minor Capuchin .
Constructed by 1632 ,the official name of the church is Church Of St Mary's Of The Angel's and is famous for being the final resting place for members of the House Of Habsburg, the imperial crypt.
On our visit to this part of town we couldn't gain access to the church, theres a lot of renovation going on presently outside the church but getting up close it was nice to take in the stunning looking church,we are back in Vienna next year and will most definitely revisit this church and check out the interior.
Easy to locate on Neuer Markt and most definitely well worth checking out if your in the area

But open the door and it is a beautiful church. We happened to be there for the performance of the men's choir from England and the acoustics were terrific. A lovely Vienna memory. The Capuchins are a very small sect of the Catholic church. The statuary is wonderful

We visited the church and the basement where the royals are laid to rest. Overall, it was an amazing visit ... better with a guided tour, but we missed the tour, and leaving the next day, so we just went in and looked around. A bit creepy but interesting at the same time.

I feel bad... the church is free... but it is another 7 euros to go into the crypt where all of the coffins with the bodies of the Hapsburgs are (minus hearts and intestines, those reside elsewhere). My aunt and I decided that we didn't need to see more than 100 coffins, and we did not pay the tax to go down. The church is small, and pretty, and baroque like all of the others in town, and while not a must see, if you are walking by, stop in and take some photos.

So much history in one building. We walked out inspired to learn more about some of the lesser-known Hapsburg family members who are entombed here. May they rest in peace.

When we visited they were digging up the road outside but we found our way in. We could not get into the Imperial vault but there was a moving pieta and nice polished woodwork.
