First place visited in Hofburg.

Amazing place. Take a tour and admire Mozart's notes and many other cultural wonders. All in an unbelievable atmosphere.

Really nice place to visit and learn about the history of the country. Near the library you have other places you should visit, so make sure you wear confortable shoes as I did.

I managed to plan and book a seven week holiday around Europe and the UK without a hitch. Except for here. How did I miss the fact that it is closed on Mondays (in winter). How was it so difficult to find the entrance? (And then discover the Papyrus/Globe museums were closed)? I don't know the answers to these questions... More

My boyfriend and I stopped here for a visit. The room was spectacular. For any book lover, this is a must. The current exhibit on Maria Theresa was great and as in most places in Vienna, exhibit was well layed out in both English and German. Camera's allowed (with no flash).

The Austrian National Library is magnificent. The beauty of the structure (and it was built for this purpose) and the breadth of the collection let you know how important knowledge was to the Hapsburgs. There are a number of items on display. Even though most are facsimiles, they are fascinating. The hidden study carels with their bookshelves, the spiral staircases,... More

It is a small place but it is still breathtaking. My partner and I had trouble finding this place, by looking on the map outside the Hoffberg we were able to locate the library around the side of the building. This library reminded me of the one that is in beauty and the beast, with the beautiful painted ceiling, the... More

We hadn't planned to visit this but came across it when in the Hofburg Palace area. It has a marvellous collection of books and the ceiling artwork is well worth the gaze, even if you have to crank your neck. The state hall of this national library had a special exhibition of 'Under the Star of Bethlehem', 24 illuminated Manuscripts... More

This library constructed for Franz Joseph is abolultely magnificent with frescos painted all over the ceilings. It's is immense in scale and books line the walls several stories high. Large globes, statues and other artworks are placed around the room. A truly remarkable building.

Staying in Inner City

Neighbourhood Profile
Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.
