Short version: Why to Go There? For the BEAUTY (eye-popping color and design) and for the HISTORICAL INTEREST (fascinating example of applied art in church designed for use by patients of turn-of-century reformist psychiatric hospital). How to Get There? Bus 48A from Dr.-Karl-Renner-Ring to Otto...More

I visited Kirche am Steinhof as part of my 5 full-day visit to Vienna and enjoyed it a bit. It was one of the few churches I had planned to visit in the city and after my time in Vienna my limited selection proved justified,...More

The church is done in spectacular Art Nouveau Architecture. It is set on a high hill overlooking the City. It is a bit out of the way but worth the trip.

If you visit thischurch, you willunderstand that the Viennese people have another relation to death. They seems tosee death as part ofthe life - soitmust be excellentlysurrounding there as well. And the architecture of that church is formative for the beginning of the 20th century!

This beautiful church ,in contrast to the Hospital there on the grounds with its terrible history . Incredible! Take the time to look up what happened there during and just after the war.

This church is simply gorgeous. Every element of the interior and exterior is beautiful. Don’t worry that there is no tour in English; you don’t need a tour. Just open your eyes and look around you (we also used our Guidebook). After looking round the...More

The most exquisite example of Jugendstil by architect Otto Wagner. On a hill, off the beaten path on the western edge of Vienna, this golden jewel is aesthetically overwhelming, both inside and out. Scandalous in its day (the church didn't like the depictions of angels...More

Take a stroll up the hill if you feel fit enough ... the gardens and grounds of the old psychiatric hospital of Vienna are rather quaint ... and be rewarded with a beautiful Art Nouveau church on the top. Though make sure you check the...More
