About
The Weltmuseum Wien is one of the world’s leading ethnographical museums, situated in the Hofburg Palace on Vienna’s Ringstrasse. In 14 distinct exhibition galleries, the focus is on unique cultural treasures from all over the world. The aim is to communicate to visitors the cultural diversity, stories and ways of life in an entertaining way. The highlights of the Museum represent more than 500 years of high-quality collecting activities on the part of the Habsburgs – among them objects from the Cabinet of Curiosities of Emperor Rudolf II, the unique Mexican feather headdress »Penacho«, the world-famous collection of James Cook, and objects from the voyages of discovery and research of the 19th century.

In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.

I came in knowing that wienese museums don't have english explanations so what underwhelmed me is just how small and not really thought after this place is.. I'm not sure how can you spend 3h here unless you are seriously lost.. It was bland, dark (not for dramatic effect, mind you.. It was dark everywhere!), the museum staff unpleasant and unwelcoming (almost felt like I would need one of those armors I learned nothing about..) 100% not worth a penny nor your time!

The Weltmuseum houses some amazing pieces of armoury from Austria, Europe and the rest of the world. Along with the armoury there are some beautiful pieces of historic art and treasures. Step inside the museum and you are instantly in wonder of the beautifully decorated interior.

Really enjoyed our visit to this museum - my partner enjoys armoury and I love music so this place had something for both of us! The armoury and historical musical instruments were really extensive - it took us a long time to get around it all, so much so that we didn’t get the chance to visit any other exhibits in the museum as we had somewhere else to be afterwards. The armoury information was in German but the musical instrument area had translations in English. Would definitely recommend to anyone who has an interest in these things!

Frankly there is no reason for mixing musical instruments (almost all Western) with an armory collection (almost all Western), and with a sparse collection of ethnological manufacts. Probably they had too much space and wanted to save on personnel. The halls are too dark, the signs (mostly in German only, and we are in a "World" museum!) are hidden sometimes on the floor and illegible because visitors are not provided with flash lights. It's a far cry not only from the new Musee de l'Homme of Paris, but from most other international ethnographical museums. The collection is simply what they had in the cellar from Franz Joseph times: no attempt whatsoever at new acquisitions or at better display or at least at dusting. Nothing extraordinary in the African collection, almost zero from the arab world, the far eastern collection is a disaster. Is this what you have in Austria of China, Korea, or Japan?

This museum has some interesting things in it, but it pretty much isn't curated. Everything is labeled, but there is no context. Just lots of stuff in glass cases. There are musical instrument s, some of which were very impressive. These don't really need to be translated, thankfully. Beautiful armor. Then there was a hall full of stuff that someone traveled around the world collecting. Apparently he had no criteria or collecting principle. He appears to have taken home whatever he was handed. Some of it is wonderful. Much of is is bleh.

Amazing artefacts and impressive collections of indigenous art from many parts of the world are displayed. The most famous exhibit is the famous Mexican crown of feathers. Although very old, it is a pleasure to see it with one's own eyes. Also videos explaining the origin, meaning and restauration of that crown are available.

This museum offers wonderful insights and overviews into a wide variety of cultures from different cultures and countries. Magnificent exhibits with good descriptions.
The most famous unique piece of all the pieces on display is probably the world-famous feather crown from Mexico, which impresses not only with its splendor but also with its good condition. Explanatory videos explain details and measures for the renovation.
You should definitely visit this museum more than once.

There were sections on Mexico, the Ottoman Empire, the First Nations in North America, Japan, China and the South Seas, as well as on the Austrian archdukes, who put together parts of the collection.
Particularly noteworthy is the collection of James Cook, which the museum acquired in London in the 19th century.
In contrast to the other museums in Vienna, it is beautifully empty.
The World Museum is in the same building as the Armory and the Musical Instruments Collection, and all three collections are included in the ticket.
There is a nice cafe in the courtyard.

I have never experienced such a bad atmosphere in a museum. Also very unfriendly and I would definitely advise against visiting this museum.
1. Overpriced
2. Unfriendly
3. I have never experienced anything like this in 20 years of visiting museums
4. Please, everyone who comes here has only themselves to blame
And that is really the truth

One of the most important ethnological museums in the world. It was a brief visit (my travel companions were not as enthusiastic as me), although I am not Mexican, if I am a lover of history, and seeing the “plume” attributed to Emperor Moctezuma (Mexicans do not pay admission) was very important to me. I was lucky to hear a Mexican guide talk and explain details about the plume that enriched the experience.

Gostaria de saber detalhes da arquitetura do castelo - belíssima construção - Welt Museum Wien.
Written 20 June 2019
Hello Bilah Bernardes,
Weltmuseum Wien is situated in the so-called "Corps de Logis", a part of the Hofburg palace. The Hofburg palace was the winter residence of the Habsburg family and is a gigantic complex. There is a lot of literature on the architecture of the Hofburg palace. You can start your journey into the architectural history with the portuguese Wikipedia article which also offers links to literature about the Hofburg.
Best regards from us at Weltmuseum Wien.

I will be visiting in May 2016 and I can't find anything about the Museum of Ethnology at the Hofburg; will I not be able to see the headdress? I will be so disappointed! Does anyone know?
