A visit to the Imperial Treasury doesn't surface on the list of many travellers but I think it's a must visit place in Vienna. Visiting Palaces is undoubtedly a good idea to get an understanding of the greatness of the empire but not everywhere are the jewels of the kings displayed. It's a MUST visit.

Ancient Monarchy and their history. Treasures and the Spear of Destiny - Relic on view. you could spend about 30min for a quick walk through or longer if you've interested. it would be great though as the historical and cultural value is intertwined in the monarchy and its people

I really only had the thinnest insights into the history of the Hapsburgs and the Holy Roman Empire. This visit revised my intentions due to this goal, range, nature and quality of the artefacts that are on display here ranging from Coronation crowns to portraits of Napoleon as the King of Italy to the beautifully inlaid and intriguingly named Chain... As a citizen of the Czech republic which is one of the successor states of Austria-Hungary I was really pleased to see some of the most important relics of our history. It took us about 2,5 hours to go through all expositions. In one word - Excellent.

Jeweled swords almost a thousand years old. Crowns 500 plus years old. Royal clothing and accoutrement of office. Takes an hour. Well worth time and money. Is 200 feet from Spanish Riding School.

We had a quick visit after watching the Spanish Riding School's morning exercise nearby, as the Vienna Pass gave us free entry. There are some amazing state jewels on display including an enormous 17th century emerald which was hollowed out to contain potions, as well as some jewel studded crowns, ceremonial swords and a 'unicorn horn' (the tusk of a... We happened upon this museum while wandering through the Imperial Palace complex. It was fascinating. So many treasures collected over more than a thousand years. It can all be seen in about an hour and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Maybe a bit expensive for what it is, but we found Vienna to be quite expensive over all.

This was included in the Vienna Pass which we bought, otherwise we might not have gone and would have then missed seeing some spectacular treasures

The jewels, crowns, gold encrusted garments, religious artifacts, staffs and so many other items of regal history will simply overwhelm you with their beauty and glitter. Very nice presentations. Rich historical information.

Staying in Inner City

Neighbourhood Profile
Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.
