About
Coaches and carriages of emperors and gowns and dresses of empresses The Imperial Carriage Museum Vienna in Schonbrunn Palace invites you to take a walk through the history of Austria. See the carriages of famous rulers such as Maria Theresia, Napoleon or Franz Joseph and accompany them through their eventful lives. The highlight is the baroque Imperial Coach, but there are also exquisite state carriages, comfortable travelling coaches and the charming children’s carriages of Habsburg princes and princesses. Another highlight is the »Sisi Trail« that showcases not only the Empress’ carriages but also personal mementos such as her only extant saddle, her »riding chapel«, and sumptuous original dresses.

My boyfriend and I visited this museum while waiting for our time to visit Schönbrunn Palace and I am glad we did! Being able to see all the different carriages used over the years and their purpose was very interesting. The detail in the carvings and decorations are impressive to be able to see up close. My favorite was the hurst carriage and it was interesting to know it was last used in the 1980’s! Make time to stop by this museum and check it out. Small enough to not be bored, but large enough to be with the money.

This is absolutely the best & must visit place at Schonbrun.
(Most tourists think that the palace's rooms are the highlight )
An impressive and magnificent carriages collection, you can't decide which one of them is more beautiful.
This place takes you back in time and it's a like a magic taken from a fairy tale.

Very nice experience. It was not crowded even if it was very crowded at Schonbrunn castle in a Saturday afternoon. The children under 19 years old entered free of charge. It is very clean, spacious and every display has plenty of explaining in German and English. There are video stations where you can watch videos with historical information about Empress Sissi and Empress Maria Theresa.

Great little museum, fascinating to get so close to the carriages with all their splendour & history. The hearse is incredible & used as recently as the 1980's! You only need a short time in there but well worth it, we almost didn't go in but very glad we did!

The carriage museum isn't huge but it has a full representation of coaches, carriages and even a few cars used over the years by the royal families of Austria. I really appreciated the variations and detailed work on each vehicle. I doubt if the museum is ever very crowded so you don't have to rush through or feel closed in by too many people. Entrance is 9.50 euros or free with the Vienna Pass. The museum is located on the Schonbrunn Palace grounds but does not require a ticket to the palce to visit it. There are also some fine pieces of clothing (uniforms) on display here are well. I especially loved the Black Hearse from the late 1800s.

The collection of Carriages contained within the space is amazing. Did not expect to like this museum as much as I did. Take the time to read up on each one and how it was made, why it was used, and by whom. Very fascinating.

The Imperial Carriages Museum was the biggest surprise of all the attractions I visited in Vienna. I was expecting some average, old dusty Habsburg carriages from the 19th century, and instead I discovered some of the most opulent carriages I have ever seen. It was especially impressive to me as I live in London and am familiar with the British monarchy's Gold State Coach and the Lord Mayor's Coach. The Imperial Coronation Carriage on display from the 1730s is both older and more delicately beautiful than anything seen in Britain, plus the mourning carriages--used during official funerals--are unique survivals from dark court rituals long gone. There was even a golden snow sleigh from the 1740s used by Empress Maria Theresa. In fact, from the early 18th century to the early 20th century the number and variety of coaches on display was incredible. The museum owns over 100 court vehicles, of which over 30 are on display. It is a paradise for royal history buffs.
Of interest, like many Vienna attractions the museum also carries items belonging to Empress Sisi, including her wedding train and one black dress showing her impossibly thin waist. An interesting video presentation (with English subtitles) recounts her groundbreaking, yet tragic life, drawing comparisons with Princess Diana's troubles.
The Museum is in the grounds of Schonbrunn just a few minutes' walk from the palace, but it has a separate entry ticket which is included in the Vienna Pass. The helpful audio guide is extra. I recommend leaving 1-2 hrs to see the museum after you have seen the palace, and to START THE VISIT FROM THE BACK OF THE HALL, where the most spectacular carriages are. Don't do like I did: I got so engrossed with the 'average' carriages in the front hall and the Sisi videos that I didn't realize the most spectacular coaches were in the back, and by the time I got there I only had 20 minutes before the place closed! The souvenir book is also one of the best I bought in Vienna.

If you're at the Schonbrunn, you may as well visit the carriage museum. I've seen carriages before but never a museum full of the, big and small, plain and ornate, and some without wheels.

To be able to stroll within an arms length of the Royal
To be able to stroll within an arms length of the selection of coaches used by the Imperil family is an awesome experience. History is all around you! Napoleon’s carriage and the funeral and ceremonial coaches are intriguing as well as the small coaches used by the Imperial family children and the sleds used to get around the palace grounds in winter. Do not bypass this building on the Schonborn Palace grounds.
