In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. Located in the heart of the city Meinl Am Graben is a must go destination for me on any holiday I take to this most beautiful of city's.
It's a cafe/ shop showcasing the great range of coffee's and chocolates that's available in Vienna ,it's beautiful laid out and has a little cafe attached which is cool.
My twin brother Stephen and I dropped by here on a freezing cold late evening ,we ordered a coffee each ,served steaming hot ,we warmed up and planned out the night ahead while sipping our coffee's.
From the first sip till the last sup you know they use quality ingredients in their coffee and take great pride in the coffee they serve in this cafe, hardly surprising it's do popular with coffee of this quality.
We really enjoyed our coffee's in here before we moved on and as on every other visit to here we had a great time.
Meinl Am Graben is easy to locate along Graben.
Opening hours are;
Monday to Friday ,8am till 7.30pm.
Saturday,9am till 6pm.
Sunday,closed.
Well worth checking out if you're in the area.

Meinl am Graben is the only reminder of a once nation-wide chain of food stores. While they were of generally high quality in the country-side and considered sources of delicatessen, the Viennese outlets were of varying appeal. All of these have now been either sold to competitors like Spar and Billa or closed, only the Meinl am Graben remained.
20 years ago, the Meinl am Graben was quite a dreary place, with a huge selection, but still badly lit. This has improved considerably with the revamping into a modern flagship store (well, not really, since a flagship store would by definition be the best among lots of stores, while this is the only one).
On two floors you will find all the delicacies from Austria and abroad that your heart, tongue and tummy are longing for. Anis-flavored Candy from France? Check. That brand of Spanish olives that tasted so fantastically good during your holiday? Check. Exotic goat cheese from Norway? Check. Fruit and vegetable to your delight? Check check check!
The "check - check - check" also gently indicates that you should be prepared to pick up quite a large cheque for your fare in the end, but it is well worth it. Just don't make silly mistakes like putting your two tomatoes onto the scale for fruit - you'll risk a heart attack from mistakenly looking at the price for baby cooking bananas.
My personal favorite is the cheese counter upstairs, where very helpful and knowledgable personnel will help you make your choice. It will not be cheap, but you will love the result. Combine with bread from the booth across the hallway, plus some wine from the ground floor, and you're all set for a nice evening.
In case you do not like preparing food yourself or have an aversion to opening a bottle of wine, the Meinl am Graben has mercifully prepared a few helpful joints for you. Feel free to choose between the restaurant upstairs, a quick coffee or spirits stop after the checkout counters or the wine and champagne bar downstairs - given there's no daylight, the hours will pass in no time.
We especially love the bar/coffee house upstairs as it is great for people watching, either inside or outside on The Graben, especially since there are small opera-glasses provided in the window booths.

This is everything a world-class food emporium should be. The food displays are awesome, the quality is top of the line, the wine selections are great - especially the Austrian wines on offer ... (and check out the cool wine cellar with the dusty old bottles as you descend the stairs.) It has great eating places from cafe, restaurant, ice cream stand. And now the best thing about shopping at Julius Meinl's - it's not pretentious at all ... or even really over-priced. In fact people from all walks of life shop here - not just the food snobs or upper-income fortunates.
And an interesting side note - Did you know that Julius Meinl's was the world's first chain food store/restaurant?? It set up branches offering its famous coffee and other Austrian snacks in the train stations of the Austrian Empire in the mid-1800s ... more than a century before McDonalds or Starbucks came on the scene.

Don't buy anything from here you could get in another supermarket - prices are at least double from what I saw. I didn't find anything special I wanted to buy here so I left empty handed and won't be going back.

Absolutely fantastic if good-quality food excites you! The product range is great: they have a huge variety of products from all over the world. The place is a bit small for all the goods they have on display, but still spacious enough make the shopping enjoyable! Only thing is that the prices there are higher than other places in Vienna.

In this high-end grocery shop you find deli products from Austria, as well as from all over the world. Worth visiting. You may also eat something small here, or a sweet, and there is a wine bar in the basement (stairs from inside the grocery shop, as well as from the side street).
Prices are not low, but you get what you pay for.
At “Graben” within the pedestrian area, on short walking distance from The Stephansplatz.

Went into this store to look for some hard to find gourmet items. We found them in spades. Also noticed a fine selection of wines and alcohol, some chilled. Produce. Upstairs was a bakery, deli and cheese shop. We picked up a few items and had antipasti back at the hotel. Wanted to go back and load up on some more specialty items, but unfortunately the place was closed. Business hours are kind of like museum hours.

Meinl am Graben is not only a gourmet grocery, but has several, surprising, dining options to stumble upon. On the upper floors, tucked away behind the towers of products, you will find one of the best sushi and sashimi bars in Vienna, with seating only for about 8 guests. On the first floor (which is also the 2nd, depending upon where you hail from), you can find one of the most fine lunc experiences in the city, with a beautiful bar and windows looking straight down the Graben to the impressive monument erected to give thanks for Vienna surviving one of the Plagues. Be prepared here to drop at least €40 per person (with a glass of wine), but lunch is a beautifully unhurried, quality dining experience. One the ground floor, in all weather, is a lunch counter set up in the entryway - a great place for tourists and businesspeople alike to grab a €3 baguette or a single container of whatever hot dishes are on offer that day (lasagna, goulash, etc). Inside the store, you can find all the wonderful, hard-to-get Austrian products and products from your home countries, too. If you are an American, be prepared that some US treats are sold as novelties (probably because they are mostly chemical and not real food), and will cost you dearly (I once saw a box of Twinkies for about $20). This is the store that those "in the know" - and Austrian society - come for hard-to-get cheeses, beef tartare, specialty cakes (which are surprisingly not too expensive), the highest quality marzipan, hard-to-find liquor and spirits . . . the list is endless. Personally, when I am stuck in a funk (which most people are in the wet, gray, winter, a trip to Meinl always put a smile on my face.

This is the best known delicatessen shop in Vienna. On two floors, you can find a very wide selection of groceries, a café, a restaurant, and an ice-cream parlor. Most of the goods here you can buy in supermarkets (first of all, Spar Gourmet) or at the Naschmarkt, but there are actually some things you can't find anywhere else, or with difficulties.
Since 2013 it has a strong concurrent in MERKUR HOHER MARKT: 3 floors, a café, a restaurant, ALMOST as wide a selection of food, but normal prices. Meinl am Graben asks for 20-30 % more than any other shop (although some produce is exactly the same as elsewhere) and some items are even 250 % more expensive. (Once, I bought some beef for 25 EUR/kg - then I found the same cut and the same quality at Naschmarkt for 9,99...)
Your choice. I recommend Merkur Hoher Markt.

Stumbled upon this world of edible delights by accident after having a drink outside in the adjoining café and “popping in” to use their loo!
I would call it the Viennese version of the Whole Foods Market chain, but better - two floors (lovely wooden staircase in between) of groceries, chilled food, fresh bread and cakes, alcohol, a delicatessen, a café/restaurant (upstairs) and a darkly romantic wine bar in the cellar downstairs – enough to keep any food fanatic entertained for hours!
Some branded products you can get anywhere (some brands with variations of products that I hadn’t see before – miniature Lindt frogs? Yes please!), alongside more exotic European delicacies. Great just for a window shop, or to pick up some treats to take home for your work colleagues/family, or for an all-out-around-the-world supermarket sweep! As a keen cook/baker I was especially interested in their selection of salts, spices, flavoured-sugars, liqueurs – I came out with some banana sugar and chestnut puree with which I’m still yet to experiment! Mostly quite reasonably priced but keep an eye on what you’re excitedly throwing in your basket, some items will catch you out. But you’re on holiday, it’s all Monopoly money, right?
The tourist (child) in my couldn’t resist the ‘Horny Betty’ and ‘Beavertown Smog Rocket’ beers…yes. just because the names amused me! And if you’re a fan of a “posh paper bag” you’re in for a bright orange treat!
