Located not very far from Westbanhoff and MariaHilfer Strasse, Haydnhaus is located in a very quiet neighborhood and quite accessible to the tourists. The house itself is not big at all. but it has a charm from the past that hits you in the face as you enter open the big wooden doors. For 5 eur/person, you can visit the... More

The famous composer Haydn`s house is located very close to the Marianhilfer strasse mall which has been converted as a memorial to him.Haydn witnessed his most creative periods of his life here & also died here. The bulk of his late work was composed here including the well known"The creation" & "The seasons" which made him the most composer in Europe... The Haydnhaus is a bit out of the way (not right in the city center) but easy to reach and well worth a visit. This is the house where Haydn spent the last 12 years of his life and composed "The Creation," among other works. As others have said, the audio guide is worth the extra 3 euros. I found... More

Not busy location, yet good amount of info to keep us occupied for over an hour. Not in the 1st district and not touristy. My son and I enjoyed it. And unlike Mozarthaus, took all the photos and no one came after us. Visited the garden too! Admission was a steal at €4/pp, audio guide €3.

When Haydn retired, he moved here to what was then a suburb. There is a museum with information in German and English. You can see where he continued to compose, slept, entertained, and later died. There is a room dedicated to Brahms as well.

We had done the Beethoven house tour and then came to this one. Wow. So much better, the audio is well worth the extra cost (it isn't much anyhow) very informative. It wasn't very busy at all when we were there, at one stage it just seemed like us and the (virtual) parrot but that shouldn't put you off. Go!

I admit to expecting a bit more from the Haydnhaus, but being in the place where Haydn lived and died is remarkable, even without a museum around it. It's worth the trip if you're a fan of his music, or of music history, without question, but causal music lovers, and younger fans may find the house dry (quiet, boring). I... More

I am a music student in Uni and I really enjoyed the Haydnhaus. Most of the items there belonged to him. The audio guides (3 euros) also provided valuable and interesting information. I would recommend this to all Classical Music lovers!

The history of Haydn, the times in Vienna, political & social while Haydn lived here is so well documented in German. SO to really get the whole picture it's essential to get the Audio Guide for just E3 & listen as well as hear some of his music. Haydn bought this house for he & his wife. He had a... More

Staying in Mariahilf

Neighbourhood Profile
Mariahilf
Vienna’s sixth district hosts high street shopping heaven and pedestrian area Mariahilfer Strasse. The weirdest local building is probably the city aquarium Haus des Meeres, housed in one of Vienna’s six remaining World War II defense towers, and topped with a rooftop bar that offers stunning views over Vienna and the centre. One of the most historic sites in the area is the passageway of 18th century Raimundhof with its small shops and cafés. It leads from Mariahilfer Strasse to Windmühlgasse. For a glimpse into the world of early 19th century theater, visit Semperdepot, the former depository for theatre decoration, which now hosts art exhibitions and fairs.
