The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Josefstadt
The eighth district is an older generation’s Vienna at its finest: and this is what makes it popular with locals of all ages. Josefstadt has theatre, small independent shops, romantic passageways, neighbourhood cafés with regular clientele, church squares, town palaces and shady communal gardens. Trendy hangouts have conquered distinctive places such as the Old General Hospital (Altes AKH) and the vaults of overground U6. Theater in der Josefstadt on Josefstädter Strasse is the district’s cultural epicentre. Even if your German isn’t good enough to watch a play, you can marvel at the typical Biedermeier building and take a glimpse into the foyer. Lange Gasse houses an iconic local restaurant at its corner, as well as a legendary sweet shop and a bustling neighbourhood market every Saturday. For small palace atmosphere and a different view on Vienna’s history, make your way to Schönborn garden palace (Palais Schönborn), which houses the Museum of Folk and Folk Art (Volkskundemuseum). Maria-Treu-Platz, with its summer outdoor cafés facing baroque church Maria Treu, and the historic passageway of Lerchenfelder Strasse 13 hide top spots for insiders.

It was an absolutely amazing experience. The music and dancing was fabulous and the building was stunning. We ddcided to go to an opera when we were in Vienna and could not have been happier with what we chose.

What a great evening and a must when you are going to be in Vienna. The musicians, singers and dancers were extraordinary. The melodies of the classical music were known but only by recording in the past. It was great be be here and experience it live.

We were sold the tickets for this experience by an agent who was in fancy dress, hanging out by Hofburg Palace. He was an official agent/salesperson and very plausible. He guaranteed that we would be looking for him the next day to bring him cake as an expression of gratitude. If I had time, I would have looked for him but not to give him cake! The audience was mainly angry old American tourists who came in on coaches.
The venue was nothing better than a school hall. The ‘orchestra’ were akin to an amateur bunch of friends having a laugh and the programme was a hitch pitch of ‘classics’ strung together in an attempt to offer the Viennese experience. It was a truly terrible almost comical experience. We left after 30 minutes.

It has been a great way to start the new year by attending a concert of classical music with our children. The Routard guide suggests this orchestra as one of the best in Vienna, which made us select this concert for this morning. The venue, the Garden Lichtestein Palace, is a fabulous palace with a beautifal hall.

The orchestra played a selection of waltzs, polkas and operette pieces, essentially from Strauss and other musicians, but not Mozart as stated on both the ticket and the concert leaflet (on sale for additional 6€ at the venue). However the selection is completely aligned to the stated orchestra objective (cfr website) of cultivating waltz and operette music styles, that is, those styles that made classical music more enjoyable for a large public. This is probably the spirit of the New Year's concert and it is fine. We actually liked a lot the selection of pieces of we found that it conveyed joy and good mood.

We are not thorough experts of classic music shows, but I would say that the quality of music players and of the singers seem very good. The concert is not only well played, but there are several moment where the conductor and the players makes some jokes that are related to the story of each piece played, which we found very funny and helped a lot the children to appreciate the whole event.
We have also been nicely welcomed and overall the experience was really enjoyable. A bar to take water or coffee would have made the whole thing better, but the concert is relatively short, so it is not strictly necessary.

If a comment is allowed, I would suggest to improve the leaflet. By adding a short background on each piece played (who/what and when it was composed for, for instance), it would help the large public that you want to address to understand the fil rouge of your selection and also the jokes, making it a much more enjoyable experience in my opinion. Music profanes, like we feel, would like to learn something by attending to this kind of event. I quickly checked wikipedia and other websites at the start of each piece, based on the piece title, and it was enough to understand why there were funny things like bird trills, hammer-played percussion and other jokes.
By providing this information, I believe that attendees would leave the concert feeling initiated to this fantastic world of the classical music. Not providing this connection leave that distance between the initiated musicians and the profanes attendees.

Taken together, we really recommend the event, also with children of about 8-11 y.o. like our children.
Thanks again for the very beatiful concert.

My elderly parent is a big fan of waltzes and familiar catchy melodies/classical music. It was pure joy to watch her embrace herself into the music and program. The orchestra and singers were very talented and a pleasure to listen to . Having a wheelchair, we did receive assistance with seating. However, a suggestion when picking up tickets. It might be easier to have a priority line for those with wheelchairs or special needs. I wasn't comfortable leaving my mother alone in a big hall while I waited in line to obtain the tickets. I requested I be taken first dur to the situation. Otherwise, the variety of the music selections was superb !!

Very disappointed about this Vienna concert in the Mozart Konzerthaus.
Not 40 but 18 musicians where on stage.
A terrible modern drums mixed with the classical instruments witch sound terrible, even with the opera singers.
Very disappointing concert!

Dear Annousch, we are sorry for your impression. I am not sure who told you about 40 musicians, but we do not guarantee any exact number of performers. It can be up to 40, but it depends on the size of the stage and other factors. On our homepage you can very well see that the size of the orchestra may vary. We do not have any modern drummer in our classical orchestra, but percussion instruments are a regular part of a symphony orchestra. Our Again, we are sorry that you did not like the concert. Best regards Vienna Hofburg Orchestra

Located in a different room to one featured in the picture above. Approx 20 piece ensemble that played very well. Accompanied by singers and dancers all of which we could not see. Sitting in the second last row it was impossible to see the stage. This could be semi fixed by using staggered seating where you can see between the two people in front of you. For the $45 euros a ticket, I definitely expected to be able to see the stage and receive a program of the music to be played (cost $6 euro).

Dear Carla W, thank you for your review! We are glad that you enjoyed the music. The classical concerts in Vienna are visited by many tourists, both in groups and individually. We do our best to provide the best possible experience for everyone, but unfortunately this is not always easy. Of course, a tour group would like to sit together. Likewise a family with 2 children. Our evening staff tried on the basis of the booking list every evening to create a plan to offer each guest a good place in the booked category. We are very sorry that you were not satisfied with your seat. We will do our best to create more transparency here and accordingly upload the sittings and seating plans of our concert halls. We understand your disappointment that there were no introductions and/or free program to know which pieces were played. To explain: Traditionally, programs are not handed out as printed papers, neither are the pieces announced. You will not find paper printouts in the State Opera, or at the Vienna Philharmonics. A lot of newly found orchestras and ensembles break with this tradition. We are currently working on a compromise, so that you will be able to see/download the program each day on our website. This would solve that problem, not break with the tradition of a typical classical concert and will also be more ecological responsible than printing hundreds of booklets every evening. This will be possible in 2020. Best regards, Vienna Hofburg-Orchestra

We came to enjoy the music but there was live dancing and/or singing with every song which really distracted from the music. There were also a lot of jokes and it just felt really amateur. It also seemed to be full of mainly older age tours. I wouldn't recommend for people who just want an evening of classical music.

Dear LondonExPat1, Thank you for your feedback. The classical concerts in Vienna are visited by many tourists, both in groups and individually. We do our best to provide the best possible experience for everyone, but unfortunately this is not always easy. Those few jokes in the concert go back to the times of Strauss and they are kind of part of the Austrian concert history. It was not made for commercial reasons. The age of people should not be a factor when listening to classical music. The works of Mozart and Strauss are made for anyone who likes classical music. Best regards, Vienna Hofburg-Orchestra

The concert was amazing and we were fortunate that it was held in the Grand Room of the palace (since the other room was booked for another event.) The beauty of the palace coupled with the music which was exceptional made this a highlight of my trip. Purchased ticket online and exchanged (with no hassle) at the Orangery (just outside the palace main gate (near the crosswalk when you exit the Underground metro and cross the street to the palace.) Enjoy!
