Neighbourhood: Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.

- Don MNew Westminster, Canada70 contributionsCity hall tour is free and fascinatingThere are limited number so tickets per day and you need to go there early and get a ticket for the afternoon tour (about 1.5 hours). The building is amazing and looks like a neo-gothic church by design. The tour is in German but we had a small group and the tour was given in English. There is an audio device for the 10 key points of interest. The rooms are huge and elaborate. The hall is also a conference center as well as the city and provincial parliament. There is also a museum of the Austrian revolt of the 1930s. A fascinating feature is a continuous moving elevator that you step in and out of while it is moving. At the top and bottom the car moves sideways and then continues in the opposite direction. One of the highlights of our entire Vienna stay.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 September 2023
- tomalli68Falkirk, United Kingdom878 contributionsInterestingYet another beautiful building in Vienna. Took part in the one hour free tour which took us round a variety of goergeous rooms. Beautiful architecture, beautiful paintings, beautiful ceilings. Worth taking time to do the free tour, you do get a small audio which offers a variety of languages. My one criticism is that whilst the tour itself is in German, the person takong the tour takes twice as long to talk about each room than the audio does which suggests more is getting said, also when questions are being asked she didn't translate what was being said for others in the groipVisited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 28 September 2023
- The Mills TwinsWrexham, United Kingdom599 contributionsBeautiful building - Illusive paternoster lift ...We really came in here to see the paternoster lift in motion. Afraid we had missed it as we believed it to turn off at 4 we wandered the beautiful hallways in search of the lift. Eventually we had to ask a guard who pointed us in the right direction. Enter via felderstrße entrance turn right and go through the doorway to the end of the hall. Opposite the new lift there is a corridor. Through the white door on the left is the lift - this is the bit we missed when trying to find it . You can ride in the lift all the way to the top and over. Don't be afraid! Pretty fun thing to do for a quick stop! The rest of the building is beautiful and free to enter .Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 23 November 2023
- Siobhan LBelton, Texas977 contributionsBeautiful Christmas decorThe market at City Hall is advertised as the largest in Vienna but I actually found it to be quite small- easily walked at a slow pace in less than an hour. The backdrop is the gorgeous city hall building Rathaus constructed in the mid to late 1800's. The ornate details are incredible and you should walk around the building to take it all in. The market had some beautiful decor, lots of lights that provided a magical glow in the evening and a vintage ferris wheel and merry go round. Some good food and drink options as well.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 19 January 2024
- Raintree_ThailandBangkok, Thailand4,287 contributionsWe can be grand too!Constructed from 1872 to 1883 in a neo-Gothic style, the Vienna Rathaus (city hall) is mind-boggling. The entire structure is on a grand "we-can-be-imposing-too" scale designed to rival the huge city halls of Brussels and the like. The main tower stands 98 meters tall and the building has nearly 3,000 rooms. Now that's a lot of office space... how many people do they need to run the city?Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 July 2024

Located 5 minutes by walk from the Volkstheater metro station. The palace is externally magnificient. The problem is that can't be visited inside and also the internal court is not reachable. Before the covid, only visits on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10:00 with pre-registration on site at 8:00 were possible. It's a pity, the management of visitors should be completely revised.

Ice skating - absolutely amazing interconnected areas with narrower tracks connecting larger rinks. Very reasonably priced skate session and hire. Best was the ticket being valid for 4 hours and you come in and out as many times as you liked. Lockers also available for €3. 10% discount if you book in advance.
Location - close to the city centre, easily walkable and lovely setting in front of the Rathaus
Martket stalls - very friendly stallholders and felt a bit more varied than other markets in Vienna. Also had an under cover restaurant which was a welcome chance to warm up.

We went there during Christmas time and we were lucky yo experience their market there. it was more crowded than Schonbrunn Market but very alive and fun. all the shops are authentic and captivating. We had punch and bought some home made ginger cakes and nuts. We loved it. some friends met us up as well for a stroll which was very pleasant. The place was full of energy and the weather was perfect and we felt warm from all the punch we drank. We would love to try that again someday in our lives!

The magnificent Neo-Gothic building of the Vienna City Hall can evoke associations with similar buildings in Antwerp or, for example, Ghent. There is something from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. This is not accidental. The German architect Friedrich von Schmidt, who won the competition for the design of the Town Hall, stylistically hinted at urban freedoms. After all, in the second half of the XIX century in Vienna there was a stubborn struggle between the Habsburg monarchy, supported by the nobility and the urban bourgeoisie. And the city magistrate relied primarily on the urban class. And now the Town Hall Square is devoid of the pomp of imperial Vienna. A huge number of events are held daily in the Town Hall. We arrived late in the evening, naturally we didn't get inside, but we found a city holiday on the square. With tons of sausages and barrels of beer.A rock concert was held in front of the Town Hall.

Impressive by day but even more Impressive by night when lit up. The Christmas tree and skating ring added charm to the visit. The Gothic style is slightly different to other many Impressive buildings of Vienna but still equally grand

We've seen some pretty spectacular city halls on our travels but the Rathaus is easily the best. One of what seems an infinite number of stunning buildings in Vienna it is a can't miss on your trip to what has to be up there for most beautiful cities. There is currently a film festival on at the Rathausplatz outside the building with a food festival so enjoy some food, drinks and one incredible view.

The Rathausplatz is a square in Vienna, Austria. The Rathausplatz is in the Innere Stadt, near the new Rathaus, after which it is named. Because of its size, its design and the architecture of the surrounding buildings it is one of the most important squares in central Vienna. From January to March, the Town Hall Square turns into a huge ice rink and excites ice skating enthusiasts of all ages. The ice world in Vienna is one of the largest outdoor ice skating rinks in the world - and on no less than two levels! During the winter it's an irrepressible fairy tale
