In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.

From afar it looks like a building but as you get closer you see that it is a gate where cars and people pass through to get to the Hofburg. We came around the side since we were passing through the Burggarten. There was a cross on one side of the Burgator as well as interesting watch boxes along the main walking areas, which is a nice photo op. It was quite nice to walk under a pice of history.

Strolling from Maria Theresa Square to Heldenplatz I knew this gate must have some significance other than being mere entrance to the Hofburg Palace complex.
Only found later that it was part of the old city gate and the Ringstrasse was where old city walls stood. The gate was built in 1824 to commemorate victory over Napoleon.
Beautiful arches that complements the general majestic feel of Heldenplatz and Hofburg Palace.

It concerns a city gate in the former city wall; built around 1820. In 1809 Napoleon destroyed parts of the city wall with gates. The emperor quickly had the wall rebuilt, including this gate.

The Burgtor is a gate that was part of the old city fortifications. The modern gate has a quintuple arch facing the ring road, and a Neoclassical colonnade, on the side facing Heroes Square on Hofburg Palace complex.
A mighty looking gate.

Not sure why, but this was always one of the first impressions of Vienna for me.
Probably because, apart from being dominant by itself, this gate has such a potent surrounding which makes the whole picture much more vivid. It separates the outter city and inner city, Hofburg from everything beyond it.
Take some time to enjoy it, since it's almost impossible not to be in the area.

These large stone built gates were first erected and then opened in 1824 on the site of older fortifications which Napoleon's army believed were now obsolete. They separate the Burgring road from the Heldenplatz ( Heroes Square ) and the Hofburg Place beyond. They are free to pass through and are fairly substantial in their form, of a similar design to the Barndenburg Gates in Berlin, but seemingly not as tall but wider. They are an impressive structure and one to admire with all the other major sights in the immediate vicinity.

If you know a bit of History you know this is a historical building.
It was a palace, a HQ, a residence.
It has a square called The Square Of Heroes.
It was here that Adolf Hitler did his famous speech, proclaiming Austria as part of the Third Reich. There's footage of it from 1938.
So it's quite mesmerizing to be there and imagine all that happening, to be at that place knowing that THAT really happened there!
The rest of the building is top art, top architecture!
It's really interesting to see.
And if you cross the building, you will be in front of St. Michael's Church!
Go there and witness!

To commemorate the victory over Napoleon in the Battle of Leipzig oct 1813 - also known as the Battle of Nations - and marking the end of the Napoleonic wars and the demise of the French Empire.
The building started in 1821 and got finished in 1824 at the 11th anniversary of the Battle of Leipzig.
Built of stone - at the side towards the Maria Theresia Square it states in latin , above the arches: "FRANCISCUS I. IMPERATOR AUSTRIAE MDCCCXXIV" Francis I , Emperor of Austria 1824 and another inscription in latin LAURUM MILITIBUS LAURO DIGNIS MDCCCCXVI - translated Laurels to Soldiers Worthy of Laurels 1916 - commemorating the soldiers fallen in the battles of the WWI - and inside there is a set of staircases that will get you to the top of the gates - not always open for visits - where the memorial it is located (architect had the idea that they've fallen under the open sky so they should be commemorated under the open sky).
For those of you who are not into history it might not be that interesting, for those of you into architecture for sure it is worth a stop here, otherwise is a landmark where you can stop for a few pictures and than you move to the Heldenplatz (Heroes Square) or wherever you feel like strolling in this beautiful city .

Burgtor, or literally the outer gates of the Hofburg palace and Heldenplatz (Heroes' square), in front of the palace is a series of arched gates. The gates have roads and footpaths passing through. There are still some huge wooden doors to the gates.
